Chateau de la Grande Noe
Reviewed September 5, 2012

We have just returned from a most wonderful experience of life in a spectacular treehouse. It exceeded our expectations in every way, from the moment we were welcomed by Gavin and walked out into the woods to see our home for the next four nights. Our 11 year old son was blown away by what was to come, on climbing the stairs we arrived on a large deck with dining table and chairs. On entering the house we discovered our only light was to be candles as there is no electricity. There were 5 wonderfully comfortable beds ( a large double and a single that doubles as a sofa then a ladder up to an upper level with two singles and each bed had a faux fur throw which was great when the temp drops overnight ). Each house has a composting toilet for when you get caught short as there is a brand new loo and shower block a short walk away.
Breakfast is delivered at an agreed time and it is a wicker basket full of fresh croissants, baguettes, locally produced apple juice, jams and honeys along with hot drinks of your choice. You then haul it up on a pulley system, you can also order dinner in the evenings delivered in the same way.
They have 5 tree houses in 3 different areas and not one can be seen from the other it makes for a really peaceful holiday. There are a range of bikes available to use and a cupboard full of board games that you can take back to your house to while away the evenings.
Gavin and Agnes have obviously put alot of thought into these beautiful houses from a 2 berth for couples to a large two houses linked by walk ways in one tree to accommodate 9.
We are already making plans for a return next year and hope to take the large one with friends.

Thanks again Gavin for making it such a memorable experience

This holiday exceeded expectations as far as our family was concerned. The tree-houses were unbelievable in comfort and the fantastic way they were built (our home for the week was Le Chene Fou) and there was literally something for all age groups to enjoy, be it the freedom to wander around in safety, on bikes or on foot, the animals to take an interest in or nearby places of interest to enjoy (water park, goat farm, chateaux and gardens galore.) We went with four children aged 6 - 13 and the younger 2 were in seventh heaven, but even the older 2 found aspects to enjoy. It was truly a family holiday, which was what we were looking for. To create a holiday environment where guests feel as though they are staying with friends is quite something. Well done to Agnes and Gavin and thank you for having us!

Un gros merci Agnes, Gavin, Mathiew, Amelie et Jake.
Thanks for your hospitality. You have a very special place. The concept of the Cabane in the tree is amazing. On a beaucoup aime la cabane. Triste que nous avons pas rester plus longtemps. La bouffe a ete tres tres bonne. Sourtout les patates de Gavin. We did forget to ask for the recipe:)
Thank you very much

We spent a night on our way to Bretagne... we should have stayed longer. The wonderful hosts welcomed us to their private estate, a wonderful old chateau, farm with horses, large forest and park to walk in. Just a wonderful quite pleasure and feeling like visiting friends. The mansion and rooms are equipped with antique furniture, the host family is taking a lot of effort in making restaurant reservations nearby and helping one feel at home. We will definitely be back. Great place just for a night traveling from Paris to the west of France, or even better for a stay of several nights to enjoy the countryside and chateau, read a good book and have a good glass of wine.

A group of around 25 of us stayed at la Grande Noe to celebrate my 30th birthday as part of a car rally across France - we came across the chateau by word of mouth recommendation and it certainly did not disappoint, in fact everything about our stay absolutely exceeded our expectations. Catering for such a large group is no mean feat but Gavin & Agnes managed superbly, making us feel extremely welcome in their beautiful home and adding so many thoughtful touches. Whilst best laid plans of games on the lawn went to pot with the thunderstorm we found ourselves in, it made no difference due to the fantastic hospitality we received - which even extended to helping some of the party with their clapped out cars that couldn't hack the journey back to England! Accommodation was split between the chateau and the magical tree houses all of which provided its own character and uniqueness. The only regret we have of our stay is that we did not book for long enough! This truly is a very special place and we hope to be back to visit soon! (The BPs)

Even the parents get excited by the perspective of sleeping in a tree house. Theses are clever and comfy. Beautiful countryside for walks, games, or visits if you feel like driving. Breakfasts and diner baskets are delicious ( I mean it ) and nothing is more fun for the kids than pulling them up to the house ! We had the "castle" one (Echauguette); a MUST for every Knight and Princess in you family .

Room Tip: A low one for families, a top one for a romantic break ...

We stayed at Grand Noe for just one night but we would recommend a longer stay if possible. After a week self catering in a not so comfortable cottage this was a luxurious and very comfortable stop on our way back to England. The owners are very welcoming and will tell you about the history of the chateau and the fact that it has been in the same family for many hundreds of years which is what makes it so special, it is obviously loved and cared for. We had afternoon tea on arrival after a long drive and breakfast was in the beautiful panelled dining room.
