A wonderful resort with warm friendly staff. The staff remembered your name, your drink and were always helpful. The room was quite lovely with a well stocked bar with snacks that was replenished daily. Nice beach with ample seating and plenty of pool areas with shade. Loved the restaurants as we could choose from Mediterranean, to Italian, to Lobster, to Steaks, to Asian, on to Indian and finally Tapas! Buffet breakfast or order a menu is also available as is daily 3-meal room service.

Excellence moved right to the top of our list of favorite places to visit!

Room Tip: We just did a mid-level room with spa and pool view. In general, we aren't ever in the room exc...

We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres from December 31 - January 5, 2013-4. I really wanted to love it as much as the repeat customers whose reviews I obsessed over during the weeks before our trip. Instead, I ended up wondering how those people became repeat customers in the first place. Certainly, they must have had a different experience than we did. I find myself more in agreement with the reviewers who I initially thought were nit-picking about small things; after staying five nights, I realized that the numerous small things really did accumulate into an overall feeling of dissatisfaction. I’ll separate my review into categories, with star points for each.

First though, a word about airport transportation: do not trust that your expensive private transportation will be waiting for you. Our documentation clearly said that a representative would be waiting with a sign with the resort name and our name on it. After our long flight, we emerged into the muggy sun to find a bunch of representatives with signs, but none for us. We stood around for about 30 minutes looking lost before a guy with a clip-board asked if he could help us. He seemed to have everybody’s name on a master list, and called the Seasons Tours people. We ended up getting transportation via a Seasons voucher but with a different company. There was not even an apology offered for this. We discussed the issue with the resort concierge, and he initially said he would discuss a partial refund with Seasons, but then took their side and told us that we were supposed to check in with the guy with the clip-board and that the driver was not necessarily supposed to be there when we landed. That is not at all what the documentation said, or what we paid for. It also is clearly not true, since the guy with the clip-board did not seem like this was standard procedure for him.

Resort grounds: 4 stars. The resort is very pretty and well maintained. While we were there, we saw workers tending to the greenery, maintaining the walkways and pools, and cleaning the beach. Everything appears very clean and well kept. What keeps me from giving 5 stars is the tiled material used for the main walkways, which really does get alarmingly slippery when wet (which it often is, at a beach/pool resort, and even more so when it rains, as it did for our last two days).

Rooms: 3+ stars. We stayed in the non-club room 7007 in building 7 facing the property, in a swim-up suite. That put us right in the center of the resort, which was very convenient. We could hear the entertainment noise, but that stopped at 11 PM. After that, the noise was limited to other guests and the room service carts. I really enjoyed the patio for lounging on rainy days and for the proximity to the pool. The room was nice, although calling one large room a “suite” seems inaccurate. Good things: the rain shower (wonderful), the mini-bar, the patio. Not-so-good-things: the toilet not flushing completely the first time, the hard mattress, poor quality sheets, the uncomfortable couch. Also, the private Jacuzzi with indoor/outdoor access makes absolutely no sense in the first floor swim-up rooms. How is it usable when everyone walking by can see right in? There is no opaque curtain on the window between the tub and the patio (only a sheer one), so we found it to be completely unusable. The open bathroom plan didn’t really bother us but it is odd. For couples it may not be a big deal to have such a lack of privacy, but it must be very strange for friends traveling together.

Beach: 3 stars. I enjoyed the beach on the one really sunny day we had. It is a small area but adequate in size. There are a limited number of chairs, and all were taken by the time we arrived. Yes, the towel game is in full force. There is, as many have said, some seaweed – more like floating sea grass – which they do a pretty good job of cleaning up, although you do have to wade through a few feet of it to get to semi-clear water. The water is perfectly reasonable on calm days, though not beautiful. For our final two days the wind and rain came in, and the beach was completely unusable; the amount of seaweed and garbage that was washing in was remarkable and not very attractive.

Pools: 4+ stars. I would give the pools 5 stars if the heating was more consistent. Overall, the pools are lovely. Our suite put us right at the end of the lazy river that travels around the spa. Before we arrived, I tried to determine which pools were currently heated. While a concierge wrote an e-mail indicating that all pools were heated, the truth was what the representative on the phone told me, which was that the Excellence Club pool and the main pool were heated. This is not what the brochure says (4 of 7 pools heated in winter), but was accurate. Even though the two “lazy river” pools were not heated, on the warm days they were warm enough for swimming, and the heated main pool was quite comfortable. The “hot tubs” were maybe a few degrees warmer than the temperature of the main pool. The “lazy river” pool near the main pool did not have any current, and also does not connect to the main pool (probably so that it doesn’t need to be heated). The “lazy river” around the spa had a very slow but definite counter-clockwise current, probably as a result of the water jets, and was also influenced by the wind. There were enough floats available. Chairs were not a problem for us since we had the swim-up suite chairs, but the chairs at the main pool did look crowded on the nice days.

Activities: 2 stars. We saw two shows during our stay. The Michael Jackson show was acceptably entertaining, though nothing special. The Mayan show actually put me to sleep. The last day we were there it rained, and it became obvious how little there was to do at the resort in inclement weather. There really weren’t many planned activities for rainy days (we did walk out of a pineapple carving session that was particularly painful). The evening fire show was cancelled without any replacement, rather than substituting it with an alternate indoor show. They did have a singer/guitar player who was quite good, but not enough for main-stage entertainment at a 5-star resort.

Food: 2+ stars. I gave the + because the breakfast buffet in Toscana was quite good. Otherwise, the food was squarely 2 stars or less. The breakfast buffet had a nice variety including fresh fruits, juices, cheeses, sauces and breads. There were hot items that were variable in quality such as eggs, hash browns, sausage, meat dishes, etc. There were two egg/omelette stations for freshly made items with real eggs (Nancy at this station was great), and a griddle for French toast, pancakes and crepes. The made-to-order items were of very good quality. We had lunch once at the Grill, once at the Toscana buffet, and once at Las Olas. The lunch quality was markedly below that of breakfast, and of good (tacos on the beach) to poor (calamari appetizer at the Grill consisted of four shriveled rings on wilted lettuce, fries were universally cold and soggy) quality. We ordered room service once, and the quality was poor and the food was cold. The pizzas at the Sol bar were made fresh, and were okay, though the crust was premade and generic. For dinner, we ate twice at Chez Isabelle, once at Toscana and once at Spice. We did not have to wait for a table at any of the restaurants. All were adequate but of only okay to good quality. There seemed to be a recurrent theme of inaccurate menu descriptions. At Chez Isabelle, the French onion soup did not come with a baked cheese crust, but rather with a small amount of melted cheese at the bottom of the bowl (there was almost no cheese the second time we were there, and we had to ask the waiter to bring more). The dessert crepe that was supposed to be served with “exotic fruits” was absent any fruit except three small dots of strawberry puree arranged decoratively on the plate. At Toscana, the Saltimbocca (which, okay, is traditionally a veal dish, but we thought maybe they were making it differently) was described as beef, and no ham was listed; when it arrived, there was prosciutto covering it, and it was clearly veal, although the waiter still tried to convince us that it was beef and had to call over the chef to verify that it was veal. Consistency was also an issue. The crème brulee at Chez Isabelle was very good the first visit, but grainy and disappointing on the second visit. The French onion soup, as previously mentioned, was lacking appreciable cheese on the second visit. Of the three restaurants we tried (our first night was New Year’s Eve and they had a special dinner at the conference center), our favorite was Chez Isabelle, but not overwhelmingly. In general, they did better with the side items than with the main items, perhaps due to poor quality cuts of meat.

Drinks: 4 stars. We aren’t heavy drinkers, and definitely didn’t take full advantage of the bar scene. However, the drinks were, for the most part, tasty and not watered down. The one exception was a drink of the day called Medias de Seda which was an odd combination of gin, white cacao, grenadine, milk and cinnamon, which combined to form a foamy pink tasteless disaster that was by a long-shot the most disgusting mixed drink I have ever tasted. I would urge everyone reading this to never order this drink, and would encourage the Excellence Resorts team to remove it from the drink of the day rotation. It was that bad. We ended up only ordering at the Martini Bar once, unfortunately on our last evening, and Cesar did seem like a great bartender and made a fantastic tamarind margarita. We enjoyed the smoothies at the Revive bar which were fresh and tasty. I also loved the flaming coffee cart.

Service: 2 stars. This is the most disappointing category, because this is where they really could have excelled. However, service was spotty, and much of it was lip-service only with no follow-through. This started even before our arrival, with delayed and uninformative responses to questions we sent by e-mail to the concierge about tennis clinics and the pools. Despite multiple phone calls and e-mails, it was impossible to get answers to basic questions about activities offered at the resort. In general, the workers were pleasant and for the most part greeted us in passing. We did not (that we know of) see the general manager, and there was no indication that anybody remembered our names. We did not receive any “special” touches such as towel animals, etc. On some occasions, the staff went out of their way to satisfy our requests, such as bringing special items to us at breakfast. Other times, we felt as if we were being told “yes” when there was actually no intention of doing anything. Some examples:
 -- We ordered room service one afternoon and when done, placed the trays in the “box” to be taken away. Having read that these items were sometimes left for extended periods of time, we called to let them know that they were ready for pick-up. The following day, when the items were still there, we called again and were told someone would be right over. The next day, when we checked-out of the room, all the items (and more that we had added) were still there.
 -- We dined our second-to-last night at Spice. The manager stopped by with the chef to ask how we were enjoying the meal, and we gave some positive comments, as well as the negative observation that my husband’s noodle dish was bland with very little flavor. The manager seemed appropriately concerned and invited us to dine there the following night and he would do something special. We replied that we were planning to eat at Chez Isabelle the next night, since it was our last night at the resort. The manager told us that he would speak with the manager at Chez Isabelle, and then returned to tell us that he had spoken to the other manager already, and that they would do something special for us the next night. We waited in anticipation, but what the “special” thing might have been we will never know, because the next night when we dined at Chez Isabelle, nothing was said or done, and we did not see a manager. We had not asked for anything “special,” but were left disappointed over the absence of something we had not asked for or previously expected.
-- At lunch on our final day, we tried the buffet at Toscana. We were seated at a table without salt and pepper shakers, and had to request them. The salt shaker was plugged, and in the process of trying to free the salt, the porcelain top cracked and left an irregular hole. The server came by, saw what had happened, and made a joking comment to the effect of, "oh, that is five dollars!" He did not take the broken shaker away or bring another one. At the same lunch, the server removed our napkins and water while we were at the dessert bar - which was in sight of the table - and did not replace them after we returned to the table until we flagged him down and asked.
 -- The final straw (and the reason this category went to 2 stars instead of 3) occurred on the last day. Because of multiple issues that we had during our stay, we spoke with the resort's acting manager the evening before we departed. He listened and expressed concern, and promised to meet with us the following morning at check-out to see what he could do. When we arrived to check-out, we asked for the manager and were informed that it was his day off! There was nothing to do at that point but to laugh and leave in our fortunately on-time transportation to the airport.

One other disturbing thing happened during our stay that doesn't really fit into any of the above categories. The day after New Year's Day, we took the catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres (which I would recommend). We were away from the resort from 8 AM to 4 PM. On our arrival back to the room, I was shocked to find the door open. At first I thought that maybe housekeeping was in the room, but there was nobody there. We immediately called security and it was discovered that the mini-bar stocker had accidentally left the door open a couple of hours previously. Fortunately nothing was stolen, but our room was completely unsecured during that period of time, and not all of our important stuff fit in the safe! We did receive an explanation and an apology, but that was it.

Will we go back? Likely not. In my opinion, Excellence Playa Mujeres did not live up to its reputation and was not worth the price. Although we had a generally relaxing time, we did not experience “5-star” service that would justify a return. I am happy for the repeat customers who love the place and have bonded with the staff. As first time guests at an all-inclusive resort, we had high expectations and were vastly underwhelmed.

Stayed at the EPM for 17 days over the Christmas period and this resort is definitely not the 5 star luxury we have enjoyed in the Middle East. We had a swim up room in block 5 which was like a dark dingy cave no sun at all at any time of the day, terrace was muddy and the sunbeds were infested with ants, which made the 'swim up' un-useable. The room was clean but smelled bad when we first walked in, the lampshades were stained and worn and the tap on one of the sinks was badly chipped, big chunk of chrome missing. Mini bar service was hit and miss, not replenished every day and we only wanted a bottle of wine, spirits were hardly touched, same applied to the coffee/tea box. We had a rather wilted rose on the bed when we first arrived and only one towel sculpture in 17 days. We felt the staff soon lost interest in you when you didn't tip. The food was mediocre, the French Restaurant being the best, but always a 1 to 2 hour wait. The wait for the other restaurants not so long and not so good.

The entertainment was rather like the old British Butlins holiday camp style and got very boring after a while. I would also advise people to be careful in the communal pool areas and lazy river especially on the floating beds, I caught impetigo after 10 days on my face and arms, this was very sore and painful, on the plane home I had open sores all over my face and went straight from the airport to my Doctor who prescribed antibiotics and I was housebound for a few days feeling quite unwell. We were also badly bitten, beware of the sandflies on the beach, don't forget to take Repel 100 Veet with you - I forgot!

If you like to drink lots of alcohol, enjoy repetitive entertainment and are not fussy about what you eat, then this is the place for you. We will not return to this resort.

Room Tip: Rooms in blocks 1, 2 and 7 get the sun on the terrace in December.

This Christmas we spent a week at The Beloved (our 2nd time) and the next week at The Excellence next door. Both wonderful resorts, with the best service we ever experienced in our many trips to Mexico. EPM had the better beach, pools and many pluses just due to it being much larger, and adults only. Many more restaurant's, less crowded beach, and things to do at night. The Beloved has nicer rooms ( incredible!), personal service and no "Excellence Club" everybody's get's the same top shelf treatment and benefits. But the trucks hauling seaweed from the condo's next door and lack of things to do in the evening give EPM the edge. You can't go wrong with either of these resorts, beautiful hotels, great food and the best service.

Room Tip: Building's 2-3-4 quieter.

My new husband and I couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon. This resort rocked, and we cannot wait to go back. I just finished reading the "poor" reviews on this site, and frankly, I don't get it. We had a top notch experience!!!

First, our room was rooftop terrace suite. We had a balcony, and a giant private rooftop, with two lounging couches and plunge pool. The bed was amazing, and the bathroom sparkled. We also loved the rain shower head in the tiled, walk-in shower. The shower also provided a traditional shower head.

The resort has 9 restaurants to choose from, and we tried almost all of them. We loved the Spice japanese the best - we ate there twice. We ate breakfast at the buffet daily, and we still talk about all the choices and variety. I had eggs "made to order" that were always perfect. the buffet was so extensive, we didn't have lunch anywhere.

We spent four hours in a couple spa treatment. We loved it. Every treatment was perfection. The Mille Spa is so worth the money.

Lastly, I must say the best part of this resort is... the staff!!!!! They are so friendly, accommodating and competent. I've never been treated so well. If you have a need, they've already thought of it, and can help you. I started to sit an empty plate down, and it was swooped out of my hand. My husband had a hand full of drinks and someone ran to help him carry them. They remember our names, our likes and fulfilled every request. You just don't get service like this in the US.

Honestly, I have nothing bad or even remotely negative to say about this resort... we are hoarding our pennies so we can go back on our anniversary!!!!!

Room Tip: We had the rooftop terrace suite which was amazing. We didn't pay the extra for Ocean view, but...

My husband and I go to the Carribean, at least, annually, and always stay in a luxury all-inclusive. So, my judgemnts are based on comparing the Excellence Playa Mujeres to the other places we have stayed. Let me start with the highlights. All staff at this resort are amazing - friendly, kind, helpful, attentive and accommodating. Everyone went WAY out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The rooms were lovely, and kept extremely clean (the one down side was that both the bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable - the bed was as hard as a rock, and the pillows were tiny). The landscaping and art work throughout the resort was beautiful.

The food was only fair compared to other all inclusives. New Years dinner was a HUGE disappointment in that there was no special buffet like we have had for holidays at other resorts, instead they had a mass prepared meal that was less than appetizing. Also, there were no beach buffets that other resorts tend to have, at least, weekly. We liked the French and Asian restaurants best, and felt the food was very good at both places. It was really nice that you did not have to make a reservation at any of the restaurants, and always had an open table at the time we chose to dine!

I think the biggest disappointment was the beach - not like it is pictured on the website. It is a very narrow strip of sand, and there is tons of smelly seaweed. Definitely the least pretty beach area I have ever stayed. The resort also does not have a lot of beach activities. We love to dine on the beach and most of the restaurants for this resort are removed from the beach areas. Also, there are few rooms with true ocean views, even if you book one with an ocean view (we heard lots of people complaining about this). My guess is that the resort, since it is fairly new, was built according to new hurricane codes, so no rooms are close or facing the water directly, a huge disappointment for us, since we had booked an ocean view. So, overall there are pluses and minuses. I would not go back, since I have stayed at many places I prefer a whole lot more. But, if you like service, and don't mind a so-so beach and beach focus, this would be the perfect resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor as close to the ocean as possible.

Allow us to thank you for taking the time to write this review in which you share your experience at Excellence Playa Mujeres with all Trip Advisor Readers.

Thank you for adding very generous remarks of the positive sides of your vacation with us and mentioning the services that made your stay more comfortable. We also appreciate your detailed feedback, which helped us identify specifically the areas of opportunity encountered during your stay.

Our guest comfort is very important for us and we deeply regret our beds didn’t meet your expectations. However we would like to highlight that at Excellence Resorts we count with mattress toppers and pillow menus in order to accomplish this goal.

Regarding the mentioned issue with the beach, please note that depending on weather conditions, the ocean can be seen more clearly some days than others. Be sure we definitely do our best to keep our beach as clean as nature allows.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you and provide you the memorable and relaxing experience you deserve.

We honeymooned at the Excellence Punta Cana-Dominican Republic in April 2010, loved it, so decided to try the same resort in a different country. Excellence Playa Mujeres did not disappoint! The property is absolutely beautiful, very modern! The rooms were gorgeous, very swanky! We very much enjoyed the restaurants and plethora of nightly activities (the hookah bar as an added bonus). The only negative would be the beach, we vacationed in late October, great for less tourist, but it was very windy and a lot of seaweed on the beach. Also, the hotel is 20-30 minutes from Cancun, which is a bomber if you ilke to venture out. Overall, it was an excellent stay and I would highly recommend for a secluded, adults only, all-inclusive!
