Its probably really a really high end 4 star hotel thought, or a very low end 5 star. The resort though was very nice and while we are picky people, we would go back again.
The lobby and entrance is grand.
Activities - MAny and diverse
Excellence Club - Recomended
Food - We felt the food was quite good for all inclusive, but just OK overall. The exception was the lobster house where you could receive unlimited lobster tails every night it was open.
Booze - Mid to top level liquor.
Rooms- large and well appointed. Showers are very large and has a traditional head but also a rainforesst head too which is nice. The biggest drawbacks were that the bathroom is effectively open air so, not to be disgusting, but if you need to go the bathroom and make some noise... your new wife/fiancee/other half is going to hear it loud and clear and vice versa. This appears to be a trend at many newer hotels and I just don't like it. Also the balcony, while nice and large, was not private. In comparison the Sun Palace in Cancun is beachfront, but no one can see into your balcony so you can do whatever you want out there and not worry about flashing the neighbors or someone peaking in. They also have no concept of what oceanview is (see below).
Beach is awesome other than it does have spots where their is sea grass. they do cut it but that leaves stubble and there is some seagrass floating on surface. My wife is freaked out with most beaches and either wont go in or only goes in to her knees. She had no issues with this beach. THe beds/chairs and beach service were fantastic. We never wanted for anything (please remember we upgraded to club level and used the club level beach so I cant speak to the other areas of the resort).
Service - very good and very friendly. They were more than happy to speak english, but were also enthusiastic if you spoke spanish. We had the pleasure of being seated by three very friendly lady's - Gloria, Jacquiline, and Isabel. Carolina (EC Hostess) and Maria, Fidel and Raquel were the EC Beach servers and were great. I dont think I have ever tipped a hostess before, but i did. Even though its all inclusive we tip anyway and the service was good enough that we tipped all day every day.
While we enjoyed everything and would recommend you go there - what didnt we like?
The biggest drawback is that while many rooms can see part of the beach..... most rooms, including "beach front" are not beach front. So dont pay for it. We had a club level beachfront and we were on the second floor. The balcony overlooked the private club level pool, a bunch of trees/greenery/ and just in the distance you could see parts of the beach. At any other resort this would be called at best an ocean view and probably more what would be considered a pool view considering thats what I was looking at.
Spa was very nice and relaxing. Rather pricey, but still nice. there are areas that need "maintained" For example the steam room is definitely in need of being redone, the ceiling is cracked everywhere and there are signs of mold (it is a steam room though). The spa pool is also cracking.
As I mentioned the beach is a little grassy, but still very nice. I suppose it could be better or worse depending on when you go. Either way they do work at keeping it trimmed back and cleaned up on the beach...but there is only so much you can do.
Alcohol - They have great mid to top shelf alcohol, but dont expect single malt like Glenlivet or high end wine.
Another drawback - While this is adults only, it is also a destination wedding and honeymoon mecha. Combine that with unlimited alcohol and you can get a bit of "party mode" when you are trying to be in "relax mode". We didnt have a problem, but we saw a couple of instances where guests where partying hard, being loud, and or obnoxious. This isnt the resorts fault..... if you went to a 4 star or 5 star resort that was not all inclusive I doubt you would have any trouble, but here... it just depends on who is checking in.
Bottom line is this is a very nice very fine all inclusive hotel. If you want ultra high end.... dont get an all inclusive resort. Stay at the 4 Seasons. Cruises probably have better food at a lessor price, but not free booze. They also lack staying in one spot and enjoying the beach. I think its worth staying here just know what you are getting.
Also - Catamaran Cruise, Snorkeling, and a trip to Playa Mujers are all recommended.
