“Lower Your Expectations”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

In absolute terms, the Excellence Playa Mujeres isn't bad, but considering how much it costs compared to other resorts, it is definitely not worth the money.
Pros:
Beach - Beautiful, well manicured
Pools - Clean, reasonably warm (given the Feb outdoor temps)
Room size and amenities - big shower, comfortable bed
Surprise upgrade - we arrived before the official check-in time, and they let us still partake in the resort's activities. When they called us for our room, they said they didn't have any of our type, so they upgraded us to a top-floor suite with a huge private balcony and private pool.

Cons:
Food - their approach is quantity over quality. Lots of variety, but you can tell they're using the cheapest ingredients they can get a hold of (especially the meats, and the "tenderloin" being the biggest disappointment).
Service - the servers were pleasant and generally accommodating but I've stayed at other resorts where the staff truly wants to help you. For example, at Excellence, you'd often have to wait to get a drink at the bar not because the bartenders were helping other clients, but because they were doing something else and not really eager to serve.
Room service - The few times we used room service, we were quoted about an hour, but served in about an hour and a half. If they're going to offer it as a free service, they should do it well.
Hot tub - on our last night, we wanted to fire up the hot tub in our room. Unfortunately, when we turned it out, urine-colored liquid came pouring out. I'm sure it was just rust, but a real turn-off.
Extra charges - the day before I left, I needed to confirm my airport shuttle, so I used the hotel phone, calling the TOLL FREE Mexico number. The hotel charged $5 for a free call. That's absurd, and when I complained, they wouldn't take it off the bill, and held me hostage at the resort until I paid it. I let them know that I'll be disputing the charge with my credit card company.

My wife and I just returned from EPM last night after a 5 night stay in a "Club" level room, building 8. Everything said by others about the grounds and staff is absolutely true. Clearly someone in the Excellence HR department knows how to find incredibly nice and habitually friendly people to work there. I also agree with other reviewers that while tipping is certainly not required, we found ourselves WANTING to help these nice people who almost certainly live in situations that most of us guests could not comprehend.

-The location of EPM is a real benefit, as truly a guest can walk for several miles along the beach and not see another resort, and at no time did anyone approach/harass us as is the norm on most Caribbean islands. The bike tour offered every day at 9 and 4 is highly recommended as it shows a large view of the whole property, such as the beautiful greenway that winds along the adjacent golf course (see photo), perfect for running and walking, and still under the guard of the property's security fences and watchmen. This is a huge improvement over our experiences elsewhere, where you feel pretty restricted to the hotel grounds.

-Food at EPM was very good and pretty consistent. We were happy to see that portions were not huge (we hate to waste) though some might wish for "seconds." Our only all inclusive comparison is Sandals Royal Plantation, which had an amazing French restaurant, but pretty mediocre food otherwise. EPM has much better breakfasts, and more consistent quality between the restaurants (though none quite as good as the Sandals French one.) One tip on something we got wrong the 1st night- there are no reservations; you have to show up early and get a "beeper" which can take 45-60 min for a table. Plan ahead!

-Watersports were only good, with just Hobie Cats and kayaks included. Sandals is better with their in-house snorkel and scuba- this is available at EPM, but costs more and off the property. To EPM: a few stand up paddle boards would be welcomed.

-If someone from EPM reads this PLEASE turn down the "aromatherapy" things in the main lobby. They are very strong and people sensitive to them found them reminiscent of citronella. Most of the employees didn't like it either but no one was able to do anything...

-Now, the rooms. There is a tendency, it appears, in modern hotel architecture to make hotel rooms "open." The W hotel in Boston has a curtain between the sleep area and the bathroom, for no obvious reason. EPM goes a step further. with only wide open spaces - the headboard of the bed is also the backsplash of the bathroom sink (see my photo of Audrey drying her hair seen from the porch.) It's almost impossible to wash hands at night without waking the other person. There's a picture window from the sleep area to the shower, and a glass door to the toilet . While it looks nice in the brochures, this takes some getting used to. The whirlpool tub (we didn't use) is in the "den" area, with clear glass to the porch.

-Overall, this is a fabulous property with great staff, perfect location, and excellent food. With less aromatherapy, a piece of sheet rock behind the bed, and a snorkel boat it might be about perfect!

Room Tip: I personally would avoid the ground floor rooms- the layout of the rooms doesn't afford much pri...

We're going to this Excellence once a year since it opened 5 years ago. The hotel is constantly taking care of so look exactly like it just open. All the employees are always smiling and look happy to be working there. The food is very good as usual and they just put a pizza wood oven at the bar outside which is a really good idea. Twice a week, there is a band playing for 2 hours in the afternoon at the pool which brings a really nice atmosphere. On our 9 days, we saw the General Manager (Virginia) at least 3 times at the pool area talking to the guest and taking our comments which I find really professional and appreciated that they care about the guest satisfaction. Also, I would like to mention the good service we got from Alexander and his bar service team. We're golf players and the golf course is the best one we ever did in Mexico, beautiful golf, employees are exceptional.

Again, thanks to Virginia and all her team and we will return shortly for sure!

This was our 3rd time back to Playa Mujeres (group of 10 in the Excellence Club) and it is still wonderful! From start to finish everything was perfect. We have been to many all-inclusives but this remains our favorite. The staff, the service, the food, the cleanliness of the rooms and grounds....superb! You will love it!

Just got back from a 5 night getaway at EPM and it was absolutely perfect. The resort is a well oiled machine, we were able to enjoy from the moment we got there till the moment we left. The staff works so incredibly hard, I've never experienced such good service.

We spent the majority of our time in the pool and the deck chair area between the beach. The servers come around frequently to the pool and around the beach to bring you drinks. The lunch on the beach was great. My husband said it was the best shrimp he's ever had. We also had the pizza from the brick oven near the pool, it's tasty and quick!

We spent most of our evenings relaxing at the cafe kafe bar. The weather was perfect and it was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the evening. What really made our night was the outstanding bartenders, so quick and friendly. They learned our drinks and made them before we even asked half the time.

The food was great, we loved the huge breakfast buffet in the morning. Spice and chez Isabel were our favorites. We really liked the Indian as well. We hit the lobster house at a bad time as it was so so. But others had raved about it.

We stayed in building 7 and it was nice and close. I requested by email building 7 based on recommendations on trip advisor. I was very happen they made this happen as they were at capacity and it really is a convenient place to stay. I'm just glad we stayed on the ocean side, it would have been kind of loud facing the bars.

The spa was great. Definitely wait to book till you get there. They have different specials daily highly discounted from the list price.

Room Tip: Building 7 is a nice spot. Ask to face away from the bars.

I have to say for all that we got the value was really very good. The concierge people were happy to help with day excursions. I cannot wait to go back!

Can't say anything bad about this resort. My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon after our wedding in NJ the week of hurricane Sandy, so to say the least it was a much needed vacation and honeymoon!

Staff is wonderful, it definitely pays for you to upgrade for the excellence club, we highly suggest it. It will be worth the extra money. Amazing service, pools, and food. We are big foodies and travel a lot. This is by far the best all inclusive we have stayed at, and we have stayed in a few others in other countries and none can compare to the Excellence resort! Don't hesitate, you are safe going with this resort. You will be happy you did! Don't forget to upgrade! Enjoy!
