Excellence Playa Mujeres
Ranked #2 of 7 Hotels in Playa Mujeres
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 13, 2013

I had the fortunate opportunity to visit both Sandals Whitehouse and Excellence Playa Mujeres within 6 months so will compare them as well.

Excellence is an absolutely gorgeous resort. Everything is extremely clean, the grounds very well kept, and the buildings all actually look as nice or better than the property photos. The rooms were very spacious and equally nice. The resort is located on a very long secluded beach with only its sister family friendly resort "beloved" next to it, but with several miles of beach on the opposite side.

We stayed in an excellence club ocean view room. I would recommend the excellence club very very highly. While the "ocean view" varies significantly depending on which room you get, the real benefit are the 2 private pools and the private beach area. The waiters in this private beach area were very attentive and there are also beach beds (both covered and open to the sun) that made a full day on the beach very nice. The excellence club concierge also has a very nice bar with the higher end liquor is more generously served. We ended up getting most of our drinks from this bar and bringing them to where-ever we ended up during the day.

The restaurants were on average very good. There were several we were overly impressed with and several that left something to be desired. The small tapas restaurant was by far our favorite. The small plate dishes served there were all truly excellent. The lobster house was surprisingly good as well. We waited until near the end of our week to try it and wished we had gone more than once. The asian restaurant was a bit of a disappointment. And overall we felt that while the staff was extremely hard working and very friendly, every restaurant was very understaffed which made for long wait times and not the best service overall in the restaurants.

The rooms were very nice, we had a view of the ocean but the design of the resort has the hotels running almost perpendicular to the beach so very few rooms are close enough to have an unobstructed view, so I would recommend not to pay for the excellence club if you are only hoping for a better view. The jacuzzis in the room were large and very nice. Beds were very comfortable and I enjoyed the pillow menu. I tried out several. They were also truly happy to supply any liquor that you wanted in your room and it came stocked with fairly high end liquor to begin with.

The spa at the resort it definitely worth getting a massage at. It's one of the nicer spas I've been to at a beach resort. They have an aqua spa of sorts that you can go through prior to having a massage that involves a number of different stations with different saunas, and water massagers in a large pool area. My wife and I really enjoyed it as a sort of relaxing time before our massages.

Finally if you go I'd really recommend taking a tour to Chizen Itza (one of the Mayan pyramids). It was really fun and very cool to see. The resort set up a tour for us with private driver with an escalade which made the drive around mexico very nice.

In terms of comparison to the sandals resort we just went to my wife and I both agreed that the rooms and just all the facilities, while both very nice, were definitely nicer and just more luxury resort appearing at excellence. We both agreed that the food was on average better at Sandals and that there were more and better activities at the resort at sandals. Overall I'd say you couldn't go wrong at either and we enjoyed our week at both resorts very much.

Room Tip: Recommend excellence club rooms for the other benefits that come with them.

We have been to Excellence Punta Cana on several occasions and when we were there in November 2012 we mentioned to Roberto, The Guest Services Manager that we had booked to go to EPM in January 2013. Roberto assured us we would be well looked after.
Our expectations for EPM were high as we have loved EPC each time and we were not disappointed. Check in was friendly, quick and informative. The Bell Boy gave us a tour of the property on our way to our room. We had booked a roof top terrace and when we entered we found it decorated in streamers and balloons with welcoming gifts, fruit bowl, champagne on ice and a large bottle of our favourite tipple, Bacardi; a definite clue to communication and cooperation between Roberto at EPC and the staff at EPM!!
The room had a beautiful view of the ocean, the Marina, a pool and the gardens.
The pools and grounds are superbly maintained.
The food and drinks were top quality and we enjoyed the shows and the singers in the Café Plaza.
Although not American Football fans ourselves it was easy to appreciate the superb efforts all the staff had made to setup a superb experience around The Theatre and Plaza for the night of the Superbowl.
Eric Cervantes, General Manager’s Assistant, introduced himself early in our stay and spoke to us each time he saw us. I asked him some quite detailed questions and he made it his ‘homework’ to provide the answers the next day.
Just as at EPC, the staff at EPM are so professional, courteous, friendly and portray a willingness to ensure people enjoy everything about their stay.
The Reception staff always accommodated my request for money exchange and helped with taxi requests etc.
The maids and turndown service people did a great job and I spoke to Carlos, our minibar man, on most days about his family, our countries and our shared passion for football. Carlos made sure we had everything we wanted.
Willian, the bars supervisor, laughed with us and told us about his family and some history of the area. Fede and his crew at The Martini Bar were good fun.
The restaurant staff were very attentive and room service was good too. The people who looked after us so well around the pools and bars added so much to our holiday. Many Thanks to Barbara, Andy, Fidel, Victor and a special mention to Cindy who we became very friendly with and will keep in touch via the usual Social networks.
We will definitely be returning to EPM.

A superb, all inclusive, luxury hotel, privately & securely positioned on a beach front setting, within pristine gardens, well away from the biz of the Cancun strip, with the best staff in the hospitality business.
We are airline personnel who travel the world for a living and are fortunate enough to stay in some fine hotel establishments across the globe. Although, primarily, a holiday hotel, the Excellence Playa Mujeres, is top notch at what it does, and it does it with assured quality & confidence.
The staff at this hotel are excellent for super friendliness, service & customer care. They all really go out of their way to make you feel special & to ensure your vacation is nothing short of excellent. My wife celebrated a birthday during our stay and we arrived in the room to find it decorated with balloons & streamers, plus sparkling wine & birthday cake to help us celebrate. A lovely touch by the hotel.
Everyone from room service, to front desk staff through chambermaids & mini bar personnel were incredibly welcoming & courteous.
We found the food on offer to be very good & of a high standard. The choice of restaurants was wide & varied with our own personal favourites being Spice, Basmati, Barcelona & Toscana. A massive thank you to the staff in these restaurants, especially, Juan, Oscar, Luis & Jessica, in Basmati; Ana & Lorena, in Spice; Miguel, Andres & Martha, in Barcelona, along with Liza, Ariel, Angel, Jacqueline & Gloria, in Toscana, at breakfast, plus Frederico, in the Lobster House and Fidel, at the Revive poolside bar. All of these staff members excelled and made huge impressions on us. Well done and keep up your great work. It's noticed and appreciated. We'd also like to express our huge thanks to Sales Manager, Carlos & Concierge, Vilma for their kind assistance during our 11 night stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Martini bar, where the fabulous Oscar & Hugo mix you the most delicious & potent cocktails. Try the chocolate martini! Equally, Heidi, Andy, Julyan & Cindy, looked after us very well with their friendly & efficient service.
Although this is a large 450 suite hotel, we never felt that we were staying in a large complex. Indeed, the complex has so many pools and accommodation buildings that you could alway's find plenty of space to relax and chill out. Alas, this was no so the case by the main pool. Each to their own, however, we didn't enjoy being by the main pool, as it was too busy & too noisy! We were located in building 6, in a swim up junior suite. Great room, well furnished with plenty of amenities, although the swim up is a waste of money in our opinion.
We found the beach to be perfectly adequate, although, again, we preferred the pool and lounging on the free floats around the lazy river.....bliss!
There were a couple of little annoying points about the hotel though. One would be that the food throughout the hotel was alway's consistently luke warm!! The second big niggle was that even although the hotel advised every night in it's news letter that sunbed reservation was not allowed, sadly, it still occurred. Some mornings, some guests were awake by 7am to reserve specific beds....why?? So annoying, and very selfish! The hotel should enforce the no sunbed rule more strictly! The final, slightly negative point was that although service in the restaurants was excellent, the food delivery was sometimes, just a little, too rushed with little time between courses.
We loved our holiday at this hotel and would happily return & recommend this establishment to friends, family & colleagues.
A lovely hotel with excellent staff, food, entertainment & amenitities which makes it totally understandable as to why it has so many repeat client bookings.
Overall, a superb hotel.

Room Tip: Aim for a quiet block and avoid the extra cost of a swim up room.

My wife and I spent a week (Jan. 22nd to Jan. 29th, 2013) at this resort.

Our room was great - it was large and on the first floor so we could walk out to one of the pools. Outside our patio door and under the balcony above was a sun bed. The room had plenty of amenities, including a choice of beer, four bottles of liquor and a bottle of wine (we were sufficiently refreshed at the restaurants and bars, so we didn't need to take advantage of this amenity). The room even had a walk in closet where we stored our suitcases.

From the Buffet to the a la carte restaurants, the food was first class. The wine served with the meals was far superior to the usual plonk that you expect. One of the lunch options is pizzas that are made to order near the beach.

The grounds are well kept and very clean. The staff are genuinely friendly and their command of English was the best we have ever encountered in Mexico. The level of service that we encountered from all of the staff was superior.

Wifi was not only available everywhere, but the band width was such that you could get connected quickly and "brownouts" were rare. My wife even clicked on the Netflix icon on her iPad and was connected to our Netflix account. The only difference from watching Netflix at home was that there were Spanish sub titles. She was able to watch the show that she chose without interruption. They have a Library with a considerable choice of pocket books to borrow.

Yes, we would go back!

Room Tip: they're all nice!

Great resort. People super friendly and service second to none. We have traveled to other Caribbean adult only destinations as well as US and European such as French Riviera and this resort is the best yet. Staff so accommodating. Dinner on the beach excellent with personalized service and concierge from Excellence club arranging special surprises well above and beyond the call of duty. Resort is large enough but still small enough to be intimate. No reservations required for dinner is a big plus. Probably the most relaxing vacation ever. Excellence club 2 story room with hydroponic tub and sofas outside on second floor amazing and nicest room we have stayed in ever and this includes luxury hotels in places like London UK. We did not want to leave and cannot wait to go back. 30 minutes from busyness of Cancun on a great stretch of beach with excellent beach service. Most impressed for first time to Mexico ever. Excellent value!

Room Tip: All rooms are close to everything and noise was never an issue.

We have just returned from our 2nd stay at EPM (15.1.2013 - 29.1.2013) and again thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were surprised that the Staff remembered us, as it had been 12 months since our previous (first) visit, and they must have many other guests since then. They all seemed genuinely pleased that we returned, handshakes and big smiles. The Hotel provided, in our Room, a 'welcome package' Champagne, Fruit, Polo Shirt, Cap and Bag, presumably because this was our 2nd visit - a nice and appreciated surprise.

On a second visit, it is natural that the hotel, facilities and grounds would loose its 'hits you between your eyes' facet, that a first visit brings, but the same high standards have been maintained. We again chose a RTT, this time allocated Block 8 with a room that overlooked the main building (Martini Bar), and lazy river. We do enjoy the facilities of the RTT, as one can have sun all day by moving from one terrace bed at the back to the one at the front, or vice versa - my wife loves the sun. In a non RTT room, sun will only appear either morning or evening on the balcony, and in January the lower rooms may not get much sunlight anyway. That said there are ample sun beds around the pool, lazy river and beach areas, so not a problem in itself. A change from the room facilities in 2012 is that bottles (full-size) of Bourbon, Tequila, Vodka, Gin and Wine were provided, additional to the 'regular' mini bar contents - lager, soda's, water and crisps/oreo/snickers/M&M's.

We enjoyed all of the restaurants - menus, quality of food offered and also the ambiance of each restaurant 'theme'. Coming from a cold clime (North of England), we particularly enjoyed the Grill and Agave, eating outdoors. The Grill has the very acceptable backdrop of the Mexican Caribbean, with its warm nightime breezes, moonlight and lights from Isla Mujeres.

The weather was good throughout our stay, temperatures moderated by the proximity of the sea. This year (2013) we had three days of unsettled weather, compared to our stay in January 2012, which was perfect each day, if you like the sun. It seems that the weather this year is unsettled and more extreme over most parts of the world - in England whilst we were on holiday it was very cold and snow closed the M6 (a main UK Highway) for over 10 hours this does not usually occur in January! Everyone at home said we were fortunate to be away during the most extreme weather of the winter.

On one of the days that we encountered showers, we decided to visit the Isla Mujeres. An easy way to visit is to walk from the Hotel, going past the 2 security gates and onwards to the Punta Sam ferry terminal, just about a 10 to 15 minute walk. Be advised that the first ferry to the Island leaves at 7.00 am and the next ferry leaves at 11.00am. We had misread the timetable at Punta Sam on our exploratory visit to the terminal, believing it left at 9.30 (which was the time that it left Isla Mujeres ), but were able to travel (with other passengers) via a fast boat, (an ad hoc water-taxi) for a reasonable 120 Pesos each, and it was an enjoyable experience. On the Isla Mujeres there are lovely beaches, restaurants/Bars and many souvenir shops. A four hour visit was enough for us, as the weather was showery (but not cold) and so we caught the car ferry back to Punta Sam at 12.45. - the ferry was an experience in itself!

My view is that the friendliness and happy disposition of all of the Staff at the EPM contributes enormously to the overall enjoyment experience of the Hotel, and certainly makes us want to return again next year. Everyone from the gardeners to management approach with a smile and friendly greeting - Marcel Aviles, the Reception Manager even remembered our names although I had only met him once, and expressed his happiness that we had enjoyed our stay, as we were part of 'the family'. I could single out everyone of the Staff for special praise, but the list would be very long! I will content myself with recognition for Julien, Jorge, Tiger(Oscar), Job and the very attractive waitress Heidi from the Martini Bar, Jacqueline from the Breakfast Buffet, Edwin from the Activities Staff ( he seems to have gained well deserved promotion this year), Victor and all the other workers at the Sol Bar (I have an awful memory for names, especially after consuming lunchtime refreshment). Although excellent service at the Bars and Restaurants is not dependant upon 'tips', they certainly are appreciated by Staff, and even small amounts always gratefully acknowledged. I can also recommend visiting the Revive Bar - non alcoholic but fresh fruit smoothes, just try an H&H.

So, again, I have a high opinion of the EPM, and I am sure it will not be long before a return visit is again planned. I speaking to other guests, this opinion is shared widely - others compared stays at other premium All Inclusives in and around the Caribbean, and declared EPM 'the best'

We just returned from 6 days at this resort and it was by far one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever experienced. After reading some of the negative reviews before going, my husband commented that he wasn't sure what resort "those people" were reviewing. We noticed none of the things they commented on. We saw not one piece of trash on the grounds, in the pools, etc. we always saw available chairs, only one day did we have an issue getting a chair at the pool and that was about 1:00 when we had left the resort, but we waited about 15 minutes and chairs opened up. Every staff member was polite, spoke to us, our room was always spotlessly cleaned. I left my Ipad and IPod out to charge, it was never touched. My husband celebrated his Birthday and received a signed card from the GM along with a cake. The dining staff was always nice and spoke to us by name and Gina in the Excellence Club always made sure we were taken care of. From the moment you are met at the door with cool towels and champagne to the moment you leave you are treated well. Trust me you will not want to leave, and when you do you will think about going back. Every want is taken care of.....now I just need to figure out when I can back.

Room Tip: Excellence Club is worth the upgrade!
