“The Perfect Holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2010

The hotel was perfect in every way, it was a truly five star experience. We booked a junior suite ocean view room through Jetsetter, but when we arrived, the room more beautiful than we expected. The suite has a large king bed, a bar / living room area, a large balcony with a sun bed large enough for two and an indoor/outdoor private Jacuzzi. The best part is the shower. It has three message showerheads, a rain water showerhead and a regular showerhead. The shower was spa-sized, super clean and also large enough for two people to take shower at the same time after spending the whole day at the beach. The staff was always professional and friendly, no service was skimped. Gustavo and Roberto at the front desk never hesitated to help or show us where to find authentic local Mexican cuisine if you are looking for a break from their elegant onsite restaurant Aroma. I would say the only drawback about the hotel is that the rooms have limited ocean views due to the weird lot orientation, so the two large swimming pools never face direct sunlight, at least not during the winter when the sun is low. However, the beautiful pristine beach is 1 min walk from your room, you can sun bath on the beach all you want, and the staff is always ready to take your cocktail orders. There are constructions going on, but it never bothered us. We did try to break open a coconut we found from our road trip to Tulum on the balcony floor at around 9pm one night, that might have caused some noises, I hope we didn’t disturb anybody next door. Also, renting a car is economical and convenient, it allows you to explore Cancun center where there are bustling night activities and restaurant scenes with ease. In short, we totally recommend this hotel to anyone who wants five star service, beautiful settings and tranquil location away from the Cancun hotel zone area (which is like a trashy spring break hotspot).

My husband and I stayed here for one week over Thanksgiving. We stayed in both the junior oceanview suite and the 2-story casita. The hotel is visually stunning, done in shade of white & beige, with beautiful landscaping. However, after staying here a week, it felt like they overlooked some key items. We would recommend this hotel with some potentially major caveats.

1. Limited ocean views -- For the most part, the junior suites don't have great views, because the casitas take up most of the prime real estate. Our "oceanview suite" on the 2nd floor had a small sliver of ocean view between two buildings. If this matters to you, I would make sure to get a room on the 3rd or 4th floor, or go for a casita.

2. Hard beds -- It feels like the hotel skimped on the mattress & pillows. I like firm mattresses in general, but both my husband and I felt the bed was not comfortable. I asked for the special down pillow, which was a little better.

3. Overheard Noise -- The floors are a beautiful natural stone, but it means you can hear the people above you when they walk in heels or move furniture (sliding chairs out) very clearly.

4. Shallow Jacuzzi -- We were excited to have an in-room jacuzzi, but when we tried it, it's about 1.5 feet deep, more like a kiddie pool. Not functional at all. The public jacuzzi's were only lukewarm, so that wasn't a good option either.

5. Distance to Cancun - As others have mentioned, it's a $60 round-trip taxi ride into Cancun. The convenience store is not reasonably priced ($8 for floss), so either buy things when you are in Cancun or bring them.

6. Construction -- There is construction going on next to the hotel. For the most part, it wasn't a bother, but one night they were working until 9PM, so our dinner on the veranda of the restaurant was disturbed.

If none of the above above deter you, then highlights of the hotel include:

1. Beautiful rooms, with large private patio -- The rooms are very large by hotel standards. They had huge showers, with 3 different showerheds (rainfall, body jets, handheld). There were large private patios, with very comfortable daybed for lounging around. Maid service was excellent, with twice daily service. Comfortable terry cloth robes and slippers are provided.

2. Food -- The continental breakfast buffet was good, with fresh pastries, salad, and fruit. The restaurant Aroma, was pretty good for dinner. The waiters know which dishes are better than others, so definitely ask them. There was a complimentary happy hour on Wednesday, which had great drinks & appetizers.

3. Free wireless - very convenient for looking up things to do, checking email, etc.

4. Spa -- The spa is visually stunning, like the rest of the hotel. You have to try the Aqua Viva treatment, if just for the experience. The massages were average - relaxing, but not really customized for each person, and definitely not deep tissue (which is what I booked). The fitness center is very modern, with a wide range of machines, and individual TV's on the cardio machines.

5. Aquaworld -- Has a location down the beach by the Excellence Hotel, so you can rent jetskis, go parasailing, etc.

Overall, we had good time at the hotel. For us, we would probably choose another hotel to stay at next time in Cancun, since we care a lot about the bedding and ocean views, but this might be a good choice if you don't care about those things.

This has to be one of the most beautiful places in Mexico. It was stunning from the moment we arrived until the day we left. The staff is extremely pleasant. Not in a fake way because they have to but in a very sincere way because they seem to enjoy their jobs. We stayed in an oceanfront casita with a plunge pool. The room was gorgeous, well appointed and well designed. We were very excited about the private plunge pool...except the water was cold. We did ask twice to be moved to the casita next to us as that pool was bath water warm (it was in the sun for most of the day). But were told both times that they would turn up the heat for our pool. That did not seem to make a difference. Unfortunately this made the pool useless to us - causing the only disappointment of our stay. It is off the beaten path a bit so if you want some of the Cancun nightlife cabs to the Hotel Area round trip are about $60. If you are looking for a serene vacation with plenty of peace and quiet then this is the perfect place.

We chose La Amada based on other trip advisor reviews and for the most part they were dead on right, this is a great hotel. Before we went we had trouble finding the hotel on any maps. It is located near to Punta Sam on Playa Mujeres. It is separated by a marina from a car ferry going to the Isla de Mujeres. Though you should not be scared about the close proximity to a car ferry, because it is not noticeable in any way.

We don't want to repeat what others said in details on other reviews, we just want to fill in some gaps.

The food overall was excellent. From time to time it was inconsistent in that instead of being great, it was merely good. We used room service fairly often and ate on the terrace, having a swim-up suite - it was lovely. After your meal, you have the option of dumping the dishes in a lock box next to your door where the staff can pick it up from outside. If you do this, insist that they pick up the dishes before you go to sleep, otherwise they like to come late at night which might wake you up.

There was a bit of an echo problem from the pool area and from the hallway, but we got used it quickly. We felt so secure that we slept with our terrace door open and listened to the wonderful sound of the birds early in the morning.

The hotel is a part of a very large complex which includes a sister hotel (all inclusive - bigger - older), private residences, the marina, a golf course and shared space near the gates which had a hidden little zoo and a watch tower on top of the second gate which we watched the sun set from one night. It was very romantic.

Speaking of romantic they have the option of a private dinning experience on the beach with music, etc. We did not do this (125 usd per person) but we saw other couples out there and they were obviously enjoying it quite a bit, though watch out for windy weather!

The staff was universally happy and friendly; they went out of their way to make our stay special. They were aware of my food allergies and tried to help steer me clear of any food that was dangerous for me. The head chef even prepared a special dish just for me. Occasionally we had to wait a while and even repeat our request for water to be delivered to the room. (The filtered bottled water in the room is free, you have to pay for Fiji water everywhere else.)

The isolated location of the hotel is great for relaxation and ambiance, but somewhat of a pain for making sightseeing trips from. There is a car rental right on premises which the concierge can help you arrange and they will call taxis that always arrived within five minutes. We utilized both. The car rental prices start from 50 USD per day with Mexican Insurance (very important!) We drove to the ruins at Coba and Tulum in the compact chevy - the seats were very uncomfortable. The taxis have fixed rates which start at 150 pesos (or 15 USD) per one way trip which is pretty steep for getting to the most likely close by destinations like the Mayan ruins called El Meco and the main passenger ferry terminal to Isla de Mujeres called Puerto Juerez.

We really liked the ruins at El Meco (hours posted where 8am to 5pm.) It is not very big and it should only take you about 30 minutes to visit (the taxi waited for us) but the whole atmosphere of the place was charming. It was full of natural beauty and suntanning lizards. We got lucky that we were there during a monthly Mayan ritual (every 21st.)

The La Amada is one of the rare hotels that we want to go back to.

We arrived at the hotel and were marmly greeted by many and with the standard champage. I found it odd that they made me pay for the room "upfront", and took addtional credit card for all meals and incidentals. The room was outstanding. The grounds are outstanding. The food was outstanding. The breakfast buffet was the most elaborate and complete I have ever seen (AND I have traveled the world). There was a free hospitality greeting the first evening serving strawberry daquaris and a huge asstorment of hore'douvres. The General Manager, Jean Francois, made a point toi meet and greet each new guest....very nice touch!
This is the perfect place for a wedding, a romantic getaway, or the place I would want to spend my last few good days before my demise!!

We booked our travel through www.destinationweddings.com and had pre-arranged airport transfers through American Express Travel. From the moment we stepped foot out of the airport we knew exactly what to look for in order not to get distracted, which was extremely helpful. When we found the American Express guides they asked where we were going. When we said, "La Amada in Playa Mujeres" every one of them stopped in their tracks and looked at us saying, "you will love it. That is the best property you could've chosen." We automatically knew we made the right choice.

If you are worried about safety this area is the best possible place you could choose. Formerly a jungle, La Amada is shared with the Excellence Playa Mujeres, where we transferred for our honeymoon. There are three security check points you must go through with security guards in full gear, including weapons. The shuttle driver told us they are very strict on who is let in. I felt extremely safe.

From the moment we pulled up to La Amada we were greeted with warm and welcoming smiles, cold towels and a glass of champagne. Roberto at the front desk was very helpful with information as we did have a bit of a schedule to meet with the fabulous wedding coordinator, Nayeli.

We were escorted to our room and he showed us everything the room had to offer with explanations and to answer any questions we had about the property. The rooms are fabulous! They are extremely generous in terms of space, the layout is wonderful, the showers are FANTASTIC and the view of the impecable grounds is breath taking.

As our wedding guests were checking in they would let me know each time, which to me was very helpful and shows the level of customer service that is provided.

The food was very good. I am blessed to live in a big city with many spectacular options for dining and typically some places are disspointing on the quality and taste of food as we are acustom to but La Amada is wonderful.
There are only two restaurants but the options are tasty and we mixed it up a couple of times eating the brunch in the morning- with complimentary mimosas and bloody marys (big PLUS) and eating an early dinner at Isla Grill.
You HAVE to try the Guacamole at Isla Grill!!!

This hotel was absolutely perfect for our wedding. We had 15 people and the best part to me was having no problems finding your guests to hang out by the beach, eat lunch, go to the Lupita Lounge at night. If we would've been in a larger resort it would've been impossible to do that. On terms of activities, all of our group took a ferry ride to Isla Mujeres and we had a blast. It's much cheaper over there in terms of food and drinks. Playa de Norte beach is breathtaking. We rented golf carts and toured the whole island and stopped off for souveniers as well. My husband and I even went back a second time by ourselves and ate at their local market. Definitely a must to head to the island for fun.

All of our guests were extremely impressed with our choice for our wedding just as we were.
We had our wedding 10-10-10 on the beach and it was perfect. The weather was great! They work very hard to keep the seaweed as controlled as possible. The beach is fabulous so don't let that deter you.
We had dinner at Aroma Grill afterwards and we had a pre set menu for our guests to choose from. Most chose the filet and it did NOT dissapoint.
We then went to the beach for our beach bonfire reception with limited open bar and a mariachi band. They provided marshmallows they roasted for us over the fire. It was the most memorable experience of our lives.

We then transferred to Excellence Playa Mujeres for our honeymoon. La Amada was much better in terms of quality of food and personalized service... the rooms and closets are even bigger at La Amada. For the difference we paid per night I don't think we got our money worth but still had a fabulous time at Excellence as well.

La Amada is a hidden gem so if you're looking for a perfect getaway leaving all troubles behind, GO! You will not be disappointed.

Spa is fabulous. I did a massage and pedicure. the Hydro therapy treatment is a very unique and relaxing experience as well.

We cannot wait to return next year!!!! I think the time of year we chose was perfect. Mid 80's.

We came upon the hotel by accident. We had been staying at the Excellence Cancun but after 7 days of complaining about the damp & dirty rooms etc we were asked to leave. The Excellence thought we would like La Amada better so off we went. As soon as we walked into reception it recieved a wow from all 3 of us. We were in a different world. The rooms are fabulous, the grounds neat & tidy and the food was outstanding. The chef, the kitchen staff and the waiting staff went out of their way to make you feel comfortable whilst serving the best food in Cancun. We all looked forward to breakfast, lunch ,and diner unlike our last hotel.
We did visit the spa which is lovely however my treatment was lost in translation, so instead of recieving a body massage I was given a medieval torture treatment (supposed to make you slimmer) after a few cocktails later on we all found it very funny so no harm done.
The only down side is that it is along way to Cancun for shopping or going to bars, it would be nie if the hotel could organise a shuttle service even if they charged a nominal amount I am sure it would be popular.
We cannot wait to return.
