Le Midi Papillon Hotel
Certificate of Excellence

We lunched here prior to an afternoon sightseeing in the area. It was our first visit, but we were treated like favoured clients and the standard of service was second to none - friendly, professional, and unobtrusive. The lovely waitresses seemed to divine our needs by telepathy. Our table had a view of the old packhorse bridge and the hills beyond. As for the food - the best value lunch ever (5 courses for 23.50 euros), all local produce (often home-grown), simply but superbly cooked and presented. Their charcuterie is to die for. An excellent and interesting wine list. We'll be back - like most of the clientele, I suspect!

We stayed for 3 nights last week at the Hotel du Midi Papillon and found it one of the best small hotels we have visited in France. The staff and friendly and efficient, the rooms just right (one tiny criticism-no extractor or ventilation in the lavatory!), the food suberb, the position on the bank of the river ideal, swimming pool and little garden just right. The attention to detail we appreciated and the emphasis on local produce. Oh and it is very good value as well. We stayed demi pension and ate 5 delicious courses every evening.

Room Tip: overlooking the river

This old hotel, set by a riverside in a dramatic and wild area of mountains and gorges, may well be the best two star hotel in all of France. For a guest, it is like going back a half century: the food is plentiful and of the plain and generous sort commonly found in provincial France a couple of generations ago. It caused us to overeat on the nights we spent there. The service is warm and professional. The bed linens are actually made of linen! We had a terrific two-day stay at a price half of what would be expected in the same circumstances elsewhere. No television or internet is available, which was fine with us, but if you can’t live without modern gadgets you had better stay elsewhere. There is limited parking at the hotel so it is wise not to drive in too late. If the lot is full one needs to search around for a place in the streets nearby.

This hotel was in the valley. It had a stream behind it and hills all around. It was nice and tidy. The check-in was easy. the parking not so. We had to park in a very narrow street away from the hotel. Our room had 2 single beds in one room, with a double bed in the other room. The bathroom could be accessed privately by both rooms. The view was of the old village and the hills. The staff were friendly.
The dinner was great. Beautiful food. The breakfast was also nice and filling.
It would be a good place to stay if you liked tramping or fishing or outdoor pursuits.
