“Friendly and attentive in a shining gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

We stopped for one night and were made to feel very much at home by Christine the owner and Jim the crew. The cottage was spotless and the superb view well-assisted by the glorious weather. Nothing is too much trouble for these friendly and special people including bringing a toilet bag, which had been left by mistake, down to the pier a good challenging couple of miles away. Thanks guys and hope to see you again!!

Room Tip: No doubt Christine will sort you out and not disappoint!

We stayed here two nights. The cottage is so nice and so are the hosts. You will get the most beautiful view from all the rooms in the cottage. If you love nature - this is the place to choose. We took a boattrip to Loch Coruisk and Walked back. We had a great time.

The drive on the single-track road from Broadford to Elgol adds to the feeling of getting away from it all, as you head toward Rowan Cottage. The views of mountains and lochs along the drive are lovely.
Tip on directions: drive all the way out to Elgol, go through Elgol, and continue east on the road until you reach a cattle guard (or "cattle grid" as they are called in Scotland). Cross the cattle guard and make a left at the intersecting road. Rowan Cottage will be just up the road on the left.
The B&B is beautifully situated with an expansive view of Loch Slapin, and a gazebo with an outside sitting area if weather permits. They have B&B rooms in the main house, which we did not see, as we had the Rowanberry suite, which was attached to the main house but had a separate entrance, and included a small kitchenette area with a refrigerator and microwave, a sitting area with table and couch (and TV), a bathroom with tub/shower, and an upstairs loft bedroom. This made for a nice, private little getaway, with a big picture window for sipping tea and watching birds in the morning, but with all the advantages of a B&B, that is, a nice breakfast and other amenities included. So it seemed like the perfect combination of vacation apartment and B&B.
Speaking of food, the breakfasts were lovely, with options for a full Scottish breakfast, or something lighter with croissants, toast, cereals, variety of jams, fresh fruit, yogurt, or some of Jim's famous porridge.
Another nice plus of the breakfast area was the big picture window with well-stocked bird feeders right outside. I saw a nice selection of local birds, from chaffinches and green finches to great tits, blue tits, and coal tits.
Another nice surprise and definite bonus: Christine also offers suppers, which can really be handy, given that Elgol has nothing open in the evening. (There's one "fine dining" establishment in the area, but you will need reservations and they don't seat many tables.) Christine's suppers were very tasty: we had tender venison stewed in a lovely rich brown sauce one night, and another night had fish and chicken goujons (fish and chicken pieces breaded in oatmeal or bread crumbs), accompanied by a fresh salad, chips, and a beautiful layered cake dessert with homemade ice cream.
If you want wine with supper (or any other alcohol), BYOB because Rowan Cottage is not licensed to sell liquor, so stop in Broadford before you start out the Elgol road. The Co-operative grocery store sells a good variety of alcoholic beverages.
Christine also offers to pack lunches, which was very handy for us when we had an early departure to catch the ferry in time to catch the train in Mallaig. With no time or place to buy anything that early, her packed lunches were very much appreciated while on the long train ride to Glasgow.
Driving tip: The drive from Broadford to Rowan Cottage takes about 40 minutes, not long in miles but not fast driving. We saw red deer one morning, and watch out for the little rabbits, especially around the old cemetery and ruin on the right side of the road as you drive out from Broadford. A small rocky mound on the left side has a rabbit warren in it, and we saw rabbits on and around it several times.
Last, but certainly not least, Christine and Jim couldn't have been better hosts! They were friendly, helpful, interesting folks, and Jim is a natural-born storyteller. We would love the opportunity to visit them again!

Room Tip: The Rowanberry suite is an excellent value with sitting area and lovely view, kitchenette, and separ...

May 2013: What a lovely place to stay. Fantastic views from the bedroom window and a genuine warm welcome from Christine and Jim. Jim's suggested walk to Tommy's Seat was a lovely after dinner stroll with 360 degree views of Skye and the Highlands. Great food too. We would recommend this to anybody. Thank you folks!

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs have unbeatable views.

We had a great time in this B&B. Very quiet and beautiful place. Jim and Christine were very polite and helpful. We were treated like friends. They spend time with us chatting and having fun. We absolutely can recommend this place to everyone.

My wife and I spent a night at Rowan cottage in early June 2013. We did not have much time to get to know the place nor the owners (Jim and Christine ?) but loved the place and had some interesting conversation over breakfast.
We felt very welcome. The room was very clean and confortable, with a view on the loch. Breakfast was very good too. I understand dinner can be served at the cottage. Based on the menu I saw, it looks quite tasty - albeit not particularly cheap (not much cheaper than a mid-range restaurant, say). A good option though, given that there seems to be only one restaurant around (at the Coruisk House, in Elgol).
Nice walks to Dun Ringill and the Kilmarie graveyard can be done straight from the B&B, and the Elgol peninsula has some great walking to offer. We did a rather long walking tour of the peninsula during our stay, starting at Kilmarie, that I thoroughly recommend, for the sheer diversity of landscape that this 11-12 miles walk offers, including the beautiful Camasunary bay, the cliffs between Camasunary and Elgol (not recommended for young children), Elgol itself, and the hazel forests just north of the B&B. Some magnificient views on the Cuillin and the Blà Bheinn. Highly recommended !
