“Breathtaking Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2013

We drove from Toulouse to Pic du Midi. The drive was easy down the A64 (although be aware there are some expensive tolls awaiting you), but then the drive got much more challenging as we drove through small towns and on winding roads. Our Garmin GPS came in extremely handy.

Once we got to the base, we caught two levels of cable car to get to the observatory at the top of Pic du Midi. The two cable cars hold about 40 people and the total ride is about 15 minutes from base to observatory. Once at the peak the views of the Pyrenees mountain range were absolutely spectacular. At ~ 9,500 feet, the views truly make you feel on top of the world!

At the Pic during our visit, there was still a substantial amount of snow so we couldn't walk everywhere. But, there is a small gift shop, a restaurant, rest rooms and some impressive hardware in the form of telescopes that scan the constellations. We HIGHLY recommend a visit to Pic du Midi.

Something you have to do once in your life. The trip up is fabulous - fantastic views and just feels so great to be literally on top of the world. Only go if a clear day otherwise expensive and wasted trip.

“Amazing attraction but services let it down”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

Taking a family trip for a special birthday treat we were really looking forward to the visit. The cable cars and access were quite expensive but for a special treat we didn't mind. The entire journey to the observatory was breath-taking scenery was spectacular and the experience for us all was fantatstic - we had such a laugh - the children were thrilled!!!

Unfortunately when we arrived at the observatory the excellent experience did not remain to a high standard. The staff at best were alright to indifferent. The gift shop was completely over-priced. We had read somewhere when researching the visit that you could hire english translation headsets which were not available and when asking for the headsets we were sniffed at as if we were from planet mars! Our level of French enabled us to 'sort of' understand the information but the children were lost which was such a shame as there is so much fantastic information about the station.

The views were stunning and our choice of day was perfect, just for this it was worth the near €100 to get there.

We had also decided to have a meal at the top to celebrate and this would have been the biggest disappointment we have ever experienced travelling around France. The staff were completely bad mannered and rude to the point of nearly throwing our cutlery on the table. They were totally unattentive and unfriendly and quite shocking. At nearly €20 plus per head we were immensely unsatisfied with both the service and quality of food served. We had better service in MacDonalds in Limoux! The dessert that was presented to me was so bad that I didn't recognise it from the picture in the menu and when I refused it, we were greeted with indignation, aggression and a very disrespectful attitude. We refused to pay for the dessert and eventually when we spoke to the manager this was taken off the price of our meal.

We have visited many places all over France and would adore the French and our experiences over the years have been on the whole immensely positive. This for us was very disappointing and surprising as many of the attractions we have visited with our children have been really enjoyable and great value for money. We don't mind paying a bit extra if we get good quality but for this experience we were most definitely disappointed and quite sad. The Pic Du Midi experience like the views could be spectacular given a little bit of imagination and investment but perhaps the 'shooting fish in a barrel' approach works for the owners - a very short-sighted approach and an experience we will not repeat again on our travels!!

“Impressive but often cloudy”

Nice to discover the mysteries of Astronomy there. If weather is nice, a walk down in 3 hours is worthwhile. Was closed when I arrived in La Mongie
