We drove from Toulouse to Pic du Midi. The drive was easy down the A64 (although be aware there are some expensive tolls awaiting you), but then the drive got much more challenging as we drove through small towns and on winding roads. Our Garmin GPS came in extremely handy.
Once we got to the base, we caught two levels of cable car to get to the observatory at the top of Pic du Midi. The two cable cars hold about 40 people and the total ride is about 15 minutes from base to observatory. Once at the peak the views of the Pyrenees mountain range were absolutely spectacular. At ~ 9,500 feet, the views truly make you feel on top of the world!
At the Pic during our visit, there was still a substantial amount of snow so we couldn't walk everywhere. But, there is a small gift shop, a restaurant, rest rooms and some impressive hardware in the form of telescopes that scan the constellations. We HIGHLY recommend a visit to Pic du Midi.
