Rayaburi Resort (Racha Island)
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Ko Racha Yai
Reviewed January 5, 2014

This is a place to get away from it all. Don't expect shops, attractions and entertainment. Go to Phuket, Bangkok, or Chiang Mai for that. On Ko Racha you relax.

Our beach front room was great - spacious, with lots of place for our clothes. Nice view of the beach, and of course easy access. Beach is beautiful, but the coral in the water is hard on the feet - not much fish life or live coral here.

There are other rooms at the pool, about 100m from the beach, and other rooms a little further away. Grounds are large.

Restaurant: breakfast could be better. Otherwise, a good range of food available - though expect to pay double or triple the price of similar meals on Phuket. That said, a main course was about 300 baht.

The spa (massage, beauty treatments) is very expensive, but the normal massage by reception is cheap.

Expect to be surprised by last minute changes to boat timetables to and from Phuket. Be sure to ask and confirm at reception a couple of days in advance, as they are not "proactive". Staff are though generally friendly and helpful, and ready to arrange transport and baggage storage at their reception on Phuket (Chalong pier).

A little irritating that they close the gate at 5pm, but another entrance with a detour of a couple of hundred metres does still allow you to walk in and out to... well, to not very much - but maybe to other resorts or the one or two restaurants on the "main street". It is possible to walk between all the resorts on the island, but the island itself has a larger undeveloped area which is not accessible.

Room Tip: Choose beach front

We had 4 people and rented the beach front bungalow. The room was lovely, maybe 50 feet front beach, the view spectacular. The bathroom was not the greatest, out dated and nothing fancy. What is shown in the photo advertisement is a new section and pool set far off the beach in the back of the resort. We were not warned that there is no ATM on island, credit cards only accepted at end of stay only for purchases at your hotel. There was one restaurant - breakfast buffet not up to par, food was ok. No choice of places to go.This side of the island is not nearly as nice as the Racha Hotel side which has more amenities, nicer grounds and better beach. This is a casual place, sand floors bayside dining. Our hotel rented scooters and kayaks and snorkel equipment.,nothing else. No stores or tourist shop. One general place for soda closed every time we wanted something. We were referred to an island quad rental and they had 5 broken down, bald tired messes that we attempted to ride. One kept going off track, one leaked gas on our feet - we got our money back. The other hotel will not rent to other hotel patrons. There are komodo dragons running loose on island - they are big and hang around swampy places. Dirt Roads had piles of cow poop all over. Never saw a horse on island. The island was very small - walkable. The snorkeling was fantastic, but there are plenty of places to snorkel elsewhere. We were bored and unhappy with this resort, would not recommend.

Room Tip: Go someplace else! May be up to par in a few years.

Terrible stay !!!!
The ratio quality / price is insane !!!
The staff at the reception is impolite with no sense of the customer relationship.

Hoepfully the beach is amazing… transparent water and white sand.
The staff at the restaurant is young and good. Kitty the manager is nice as well.

No towels in the bathroom, bad smell in the room, I was really disappointed !!!!

You should go to the other hotel which is not to fare BanRaya Hotel.

Good:
1. It's the only "mid-priced" place to stay in Koh Racha.
2. Decent food for higher than average price.
3. Little boat traffic in front of beach and crystal clear waters.
4. Spacious rooms.
5. Nice pool.

BAD:
1. If you are taking the resort complimentary afternoon ferry/transport to Koh Racha, be prepared for last minute changes in departure time AND downgrade (from speedboat) to longtail - without your knowledge. Upon downgrading to a longtail, be prepared to be endure more than an hour of wet bumpy longtail boat ride soaked in stinging saltwater across choppy waves.

2. Only 2 floor mats and 1 towel per person per room - requests for more are denied. Rooms are located quite a bit of a walk from the beach. Within the rooms, bathrooms are not located next to the door but at the far end of the room. If you enter the room wet after a swim/dive/snorkel, be prepared to walk across room on a slippery floor.

3. Some dining service staff are rude. Though, the manager was quick to apologize for any shortcomings.

4. The rear gates (prohibiting you to leave the resort) are locked at 5pm - leaving you little options but to dine in the resort. p.s. there is another long detour round back if you choose to have dinner elsewhere.

5. Little corals/ marine life within 100m from beach.

Would I come back? ... No.

Stayed 6 nights at Koh Raya island. Rayaburi resort was fine for the price large rooms and peaceful beach. Breakfast service was good but quality of food could be better and could change a bit from day to day. Had dinner at the restaurant food was good bit pricey for the quality. We ate either at the racha resort or at the local restaurant outside. We opted for the garden room. Large room but a bit of a walk to the beach and restaurant. We picked the garden because its more of a villa style and would be more quite. The pool view noisy and smaller as well no sea view. Rayaburi is fine hotel good service just not managed at its full potential.

Beautiful Siam bay. Very peaceful and relaxing.
Very few day trippers unlike Batok bay around the corner.
Lovely swimming, however coral hard on the feet! Friendly helpful staff!
Restaurant food prices dearer than Phuket, but expected.
Quality and choice of meals still good. Beachside Rooms very comfortable. Inside spa bath and outside shower. Bit chaotic getting there from Chalong pier, struggling with suitcases along the beach to get to jetboat without any assistance. Return jetboat transfer could not have been better. We will be back.

Room Tip: beach side rooms perfect

We stayed here for two nights recently as part of a longer stay on Phuket. I can honestly say that this is the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. I have travelled in Asia before as well as Australia , New Zealand and many other lovely places but this one is very special! The hotel is simple but very beautiful. You can't fail to love it. There isn't much to do apart from swim in the sea, snorkel or dive but what else do you need. You must go here. It's a 30 minute speed boat trip from Phuket. Be warned the sea can be rough in low season as we experienced but it's still worth it. The beach looks lovely here but it's painful to walk into the sea without some kind of foot wear so come prepared. Last word - be careful of ordering crab in the restaurant........you really shouldn't eat everything that is cooked.we booked direct with the hotel on a recommendation from a local in Phuket. You won't be disappointed at this hotel - it's medium priced of the three hotels on this island. The Racha looks amazing but would be more expensive and the beach there can get busy even in low season.
