“Fantastic, uber-cool retreat on quiet, picture-perfect beach”
Reviewed January 20, 2011

Stayed two blissful nights after a week in Kata Noi, and the beach location blew us away. No tack, just a stylish, quiet haven of tranquility. Amazing staff who were brilliant with our four-year-old. Care is needed with little ones - lots of steps everywhere and quite a drop from the bedroom window, which our boy could easily open.
Excellent Thai and Western tapas in the Sunset bar, and lunch at the Beach restaurant was a highlight of our last day, such an amazing setting and dazzling food too. Pricey but worth it.
Surin proper is a 10-minute walk, where there are loads of bars and restaurants a cut
above what you get on many other Phuket beaches.
We hope to return after the summer refurbishment, which will improve the pool area and spa and create a fitness room.
Thanks for a memorable stay.

We had stayed at the Surin when it was still managed by The Chedi. Today, the property is still beautifully situated and well operated. The Surin sits right on one of the best beaches on Phuket island, this, combined with service and good food, makes it an ideal 5-Star hotel.

A candid comment I'm obliged to mention was that upon check-in, we were disappointed to hear that we could not use the hotel pool because it was being used for an outside function. I was quite bothered by the principle of a hotel renting out common space for private functions. This was, however, quickly rectified by the reservations manager who immediately upgraded our room, gave us a complimentary dinner and a lovely bottle of wine. ~Back in the good books again!

The rooms are dated but they are clean. The bed was comfortable and they changed sheets everyday (thou not very environmentally conscientious) but somehow, I still got bed bug bites.

The breakfast at the Surin is something to look forward to; good coffee, great croissants; the right amount of selection. It will perfectly meet your expectations.

We look forward to seeing the new look and feel of The Surin in 2011. Let's hope they preserve its original rustic, earthy, south-asian feel after the renovations. It is one of the things we love about this hotel.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review your experience at The Surin.
With regard to the up-coming renovation (starting 1st May) we can reassure you that our objective is to retain the Thai character of the resort while improving all structural and design aspects of accommodation, lobby, restaurants and bars, pool and beach area, besides adding a new Spa and fitness facilities.

We look forward to welcoming you back later on this year after our renovation.

Warm regards,

Antonio

This hotel is the opposite of everything else in Phuket. Whereas most beaches in Phuket are crowded and loud and full of vendors, the beach at this hotel is quiet and relaxing, shared with just one other hotel and a couple of lovely non-intrusive locals selling beers and massages. Whereas other hotels in Phuket are loud and flashy, full of bus/planefuls of tourists looking for the nearest pretty beach and all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, the people staying at this hotel are generally quiet and looking to relax in a non-crowded, non-party atmosphere. Whereas many other attractions/hotels/restaurants in Phuket seems to be designed for taking your money with the least expended effort, the staff at this hotel were extremely nice and accomodating, always aiming to please. The restaurant had many excellent dishes that went far above and beyond what you would typically get at a restaurant on the beach (I especially recommend the massaman curry and the pineapple fried rice). There is also some fair rock snorkeling right off the beach.

I highly recommend this hotel, though there is one thing to consider: it is such an oasis from the rest of Phuket because it is secluded and on a semi-private beach. Phuket is a very large island. That means the hotel far from a lot of piers from where boats leave for day trips to Phang Nga bay, Koh Phi Phi, Racha Island, etc. A day trip to Railey beach in Krabi was simply not possible because of the distance of Pansea/Surin beach from the departure points of the boat. However, I would not recommend trading this hotel and its wonderful beach for any hotel closer to the departure piers for day-trip boats.

Go now before it's renovated and starts charging Amanpuri prices!

Dear Yaneh,

Thank you very much for highlighting what is one of our key features: the pristine and tranquil Pansea beach which we share only with neighboring Amanpuri. Yes it is true that if you plan a boat trip to Phang Nga (which we highly recommend) it does take about 30 minutes drive to the nearest marina. But I personally think this is a journey well worth doing. The Surin however has lots of other attraction located just nearby (if you care to leave the peace and tranquility of the resort) such as the good selection of shops (especially ladies clothing); the Laguna Golf Course just 10 minutes away; Surin beach just next to us with many good night spots; Phuket Fantasea just 15 minutes away; and this is just to name a few.

We wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to welcoming you back.

Warm regards,

Antonio

The surin is on a beautiful beach - one of the best I have seen in Thailand . The staff were Welcoming and very helpful especially with our young child. Breakfast was great . We were slightly nervous after reading some reviews about the hotel needing an upgrade but were pleasantly surprised with our tasteful rooms. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I'm a many, many times return client to The Surin (The Chedi). During the past 12 years we went back on a yearly basis.

Therefore, we hesitated a bit to book what is now called The Surin, since we did not know what to expect from the new management (YTL and Amanresorts). We thought the good old times when the hotel was run by Swiss Daniel Meury were over and the fun would be out of the hotel. But we were very wrong. In the end we were so glad, we went.

The young new Italian GM, Antonio Saponara, now runs The Surin with passion and many good ideas. And he‘s an extremely nice guy. I haven‘t seen The Surin (The Chedi as most staff and return clients still call it) in better shape than in a long time. And of course, The Surin still has Thailand‘s nicest beach. By the way, the logo etc. all looks exactly the same. They only exchanged the name Chedi by Surin (colours and fonts are the same).

I think all the old clients who don‘t know what to expect from the new management can easily return and enjoy a good time. Most of the old staff is still there anyway.

I was sick during my stay and very nicely looked after from the entire staff and management. I even had to go to the hospital for five nights and the hotel called on a daily basis to the hospital if they could bring me food to the hospital and so forth. They even showed up once to bring flowers. CRM works perfectly at The Surin.

Next year, in 2011, they will close for renovation from April through the End of October. They will finally build a Gym and a new Spa. Then The Surin will be even be more attractive.

To me The Surin is and will be my favourite beach resort in Thailand.

Many, many thanks to Antonio, Khun Hong, the entire front desk and restaurant staff!

We have just returned from 10 days at the Surin and found it to be absolutely perfect with regard our requirements namely a quiet beautfiul location , great beach, big pool for the kids, great food and attentive service.
We have travelled on a number of these holidays across asia from the Maldives to Hawaii and it is rare that we would contemplate revisiting a particular hotel.
However, this hotel we would definately revisit, especially after its large renovation is completed towards the end 2011.
The private beach is quite perfect occupying the nicer end of the beach it shares with the Amanpuri.
The large pool, located 10 m from the beach, was perfect for the kids who spent their days alternating between both while we spent our days swimming and reading atop very comfortable poolside sunlounges.
We tried the small food stalls and restaurants of nearby Surin beach, as we thought the hotels restaurant food may be overpriced and lacking authenticity (in its attempts to please all), but ultimately we pleasantly surprised and found that the prices and Thai food of the hotels restaurants were well priced and of a high quality.
If we felt like a change the locals run a shack at the south end of the beach which serves cheap fresh Thai food and cheaper cold Singha , all without the spruikers of Surin.
The $5 cocktails during "happy hour' at the restaurant bar overlooking the pool were a perfect way to winddown at the end of the day.
All of the above were overseen by an attentive smiling staff.
It will be even more stunning once the renovations due 2011 are complete.
We would go back there in a heart beat.

As the hotel is the ex-Chedi and the prices quite high for a 4 stars in Thailand, we had great expectations about the confort and service. Although the beach and swimming pool are really nice, we were disappointed when we entered a room which showed many signs of age : small and fuggy room, old shower, strong smell of sewer in the cupboard, view on the very used thatched roof of the other bungalows. The hotel manager who we reported our deception to, indicated that the hotel is due to be renewed within the next 6 months. As a compensation she offered us a free limousine transfer to the hotel we finally chose for the following nights.
The hotel location has a great potential and once renewed, the prices will surely be worth it.

Greetings from Phuket and thank you very much for your review. We are sorry to hear that the standards of accommodation has not met your expectations. The resort will be entirely renovated between May and October 2011 but I want to reassure you and the readers that we are not skipping on maintenance because of this.
We are currently replacing the langlang roofs, replacing some of the sewage lines (hence a temporary breakdown that had caused bad odor close to your cottage), varnishing all walkways and rechecking the interiors of each cottage among the many maintenance activities we are undertaking.
The Surin will be as cute and charming as ever this high season and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future.

Warm Regards,

Antonio
