“Perfect wedding in paradise”
Reviewed December 22, 2011

We just had our wedding at the Surin on December 16, and we had such a special experience that we felt compelled to write this review.

We made the decision to hold our wedding at the Surin in February after considering a range of other options (including the Amanpuri and Trisara). By making such an early decision, we had ample time to consider and finalise arrangements with the Surin well in advance of the wedding.

We decided to spend a week at the Surin in April in order to make sure that it lived up to its reviews and that the published photos were a true reflection of the facilities. Our week in April was fantastic and confirmed that the resort was the perfect venue for our wedding. We stayed in the Beach Deluxe Suite right on the beach - wow, what a stunning spot. The beach was almost literally on the doorstep and the fabulous big pool was only a short distance away.

During our trip we spent a lot of time with the resort’s magnificent wedding and events co-ordinator, Khun Bat. She spoiled us rotten, treating us to a night of tasting all of the possible meal and desert options, and labouring through the cocktail menu. By the end of this, we decided to get married often. Bat also made sure that we discussed and reached agreement on each and every small detail so that we returned to London feeling comfortable that we were in safe hands.

In the run up to the wedding, we were in regular contact with Bat to make refinements to the arrangements. No request or change was ever too much trouble.

In October we received a phone call from the manager, Antonio, to inform us that due to delays in the completion of major refurbishment works (caused by the floods in Bangkok), the resort would no longer be able to accommodate all of our guests. This had the potential to be a mini crisis, but our concerns were quickly put to rest when Antonio told us that he would personally negotiate accommodation arrangements at an equivalent resort in the area. True to his word, Antonio managed to find us 20 something rooms at the nearby Twin Palms hotel and secured the reservation with his own credit card. Furthermore, in order to ensure that we were not inconvenienced, the resort also undertook to provide shuttle buses for trips to and from the Twin Palms and the Surin on the day of the wedding and the post wedding lunch the next day, and to cover any additional expenses associated with the change (including the extra over room costs for every guest). This was customer service of an exemplary standard, and it was maintained before, during and after the wedding.

The wedding was absolutely stunning. The general consensus from our guests was that it was the best wedding they’d ever been to – the marquee was beautiful, the buffet was out of this world, the entertainment was first class (jazz band, DJ, fireworks, baby elephant and Chinese lanterns) and, of course, the standards of service never dropped (cold drinks and towels constantly available etc). The Surin even made a few vacant rooms available to us on the day of the wedding free of charge so that the bride could get ready and for use as changing rooms for people with babies.

The post wedding brunch the next day was equally fabulous. It was a great opportunity to enjoy the amazing buffet food that we'd been too busy to enjoy the night before.

We have stayed at many 5 star resorts around the world, and we cannot recommend the Surin highly enough. The pool is gorgeous, the beach is perfect and the rooms are of a very high standard. Sadly, we didn’t get to stay at the resort after the refurbishment was completed, however it does look stunning. The first guests were just starting to arrive as we left. As always, the management were handling the challenges brilliantly. One of the few things lacking - a gym - has now been added so its going to be that much harder to top.

Big thanks to Antonio, Bat and Martijn and the whole team. You helped make our wedding unforgettable. See you again soon!

My wife and I had our wedding at the (virtually) completed Surin Resort a few days ago and it was such a fantastic day. The private beach is quite possibly the best in Phuket. It has beautiful white sand and is very clean. It's also clear of all the local sellers of fake sunglasses, watches and everything else that walk past every 5 mins on the other non private Surin beach. Basically the location is spot on.

The actual resort wasn't open yet due to supply and construction staff issues as a result of the Bangkok floods but is virtually there and already looking fantastic. Although we couldnt stay at the Surin we saw a few completed rooms which looked stunning. The beach deluxe suite is right on the beach and is a good size. Fit and finish is up there with the other top resorts. We booked our wedding at the Surin over a year ago and Antonio the General manager pulled out all the stops to ensure the delay in the hotel opening did not affect our big day. He is the nicest guy and did a great job so we can't thank him enough.

Most of the correspondence and wedding organising was done with their events organiser Bat. She was just out of this world and took care of everything. It can be very daunting organising an overseas wedding but she is a pro and knew exactly what she was doing, couldn't have asked for anything more. She was very typical of all the staff at the Surin who are just very attentive and just do everything possible to make your visit very easy.

For our wedding ceremony we changed our minds and moved it from the lawn area to the beach. The setting was absolutely stunning and getting married with the sun setting in the background was just perfect. Marek our celebrant conducted the perfect ceremony and was such a nice guy.

The buffet food was also a highlight of the night. Plenty to go around and it is top quality. Alberto the chef did a great job. My only regret is not actually taking advantage of the food and eating more.

At the end of the night my wife and our 35 guests all lit Chinese lanterns into the sky which was an amazing sight, a great way to end the night.

Overall we had an amazing wedding day. We've already seen some of the professional photos and they look stunning. If anyone is thinking of having their wedding at the Surin resort I would highly recommend it.

Dear M & M,

I hope that you and your family have had a memorable wedding celebration at The Surin.

For all of us your wedding came at a special time; it was the first time we have been with guests since last April. This was a huge boost in morale.

Best wishes & look forward to welcoming you back to The Surin.

Just wanted to write a little review about the Surin after a short visit last week.

The resort is currently undergoing extensive renovations and will be open and ready for business again before Christmas. Renovations are coming along very nicely - so anyone considering booking for Christmas and into New Year should have no worries.

The location is fantastic - I think it's probably the best in Phuket - the beach is picture postcard stuff and it combines a peaceful location with easy walking access into the main area of Surin, which has dozens of restaurants and bars, including a trendy beach club. Surin is one of the nicest resort areas in Phuket.

The newly upgraded cottages are a total redesign of the existing cottages - the same size, but redesigned to enhance the space, let in more light, and create a more 'luxury beach house' feel. They have been lifted considerably from the existing cottages.

There are also a number of beachfront cottages which are the perfect location - steps away from Phuket's best beach....

The Hillside Cottages up on the hill are still at this stage the original design (bear that in mind if reading previous reviews - the cottages closer to the beach are being completely revamped).

The large pool has been re-tiled and a new gym added. The wall which used to be in front of the pool has been removed and the resort intends to create a lounge area between the pool and the beach in the evening - candle-lit and chilled-out - I'm sure it will be great.

One thing to remember with the Surin is that it's set on a hillside - quite steep and a lot of walking involved - no buggies! So it won't suit anyone with real walking difficulties. Otherwise, it's just a good work out for any over-indulgence.

I think it's great that the Surin (formerly the Chedi) is having a facelift, as the location is abosolutely fantastic and the resort is going to look better than ever.

Room Tip: Beachfront Cottages are fantastic - just steps from the sand. Further back and higher up the hill, D...

Set out from London not having been to Phuket before. The hotel was a welcome sight after 14 hours of tavelling. Our room was on the hill facing the beach and had a fantastic view through the palms towards the water. Whilst the room was starting to show its age it was perfectly comfortable and cool. The little touches, flowers/biscuits was great. The food and especially the buffet breakfast was fantastic and set you up for the day. I can highly recommend the egg/pancake and waffle station!! Something for everyone. The only problem we had was a broken A/c unit but the staff were very quick to move us to another room overnight whilst it was fixed and we were back in our room the next morning with a basket of fruit as an apology. As I enjoy my watersports, would like to see the water craft updated and working properly, although the see was very rough during my stay, so not a huge problem.

If you are looking for peace, quiet, tranquility this will not fail to appeal.

Summary - Tranquil, great beach/staff/rooms and food. Also perfect sunsets!!

Look forward to coming back to see how the renovations have gone.

Room Tip: Pick one with a sea view!

Utterly idyllic. The beach is untouchable. The food is awesome and I heartily recommend the cooking classes, the head chef taught me some great dishes, which I now eat regularly, and took me and my wife to the local Market in the afternoon, great value. I really, really hope we get the time, and money, to visit here again some day. Highly recommended.

My wife and I visited Siem Reap/Angkor Wat and Phuket for 14 days.

We stayed in the Surin in Phuket for 8 days. The Surin is exceptional in every way you can describe. Although the price might seem high, believe me, it is worth it. All the rooms are identical, except for the ones at the beach, which have a bath in the room (all others have showers)

The Surin shares the beach with only one other hotel, the Amanpuri, which is beautiful, but much more expensive.

We made one mistake, and that was to take a 2 day break to the Phi Phi Island Beach Resort, which presents the worst value for money that have so far found. It is a MUCH better idea to take a day trip to the Phi Phi islands (which are beautiful)

We also went on a day trip to the Similan Islands for a snorkeling trip. This is beautiful and one of the 10 best diving sites in the world. The hotel arranged the trip (including 1.5 hour transport with a small bus to Khao Lak, from where you leave to visit the islands). We booked accommodation on the Island, but fortunately did not check out of the Surin for that day, since the accommodation on the island not so great, and we therefore changed our plan and returned the same day. If you want to stay longer, rather go on a diving trip - wikipedia / wikitravel have great references to companies. We used http://www.seastarsite.com/ . We were very satisfied, and recommend them.

Do not book the day-trips book ahead - wait for a day where you have guaranteed good weather

I had a suit and 2 shirts made at Manhatten Tailor in Phuket City for me. I am extremely pleased with the suit and the shirts. Whilst I am sure that you will be able to find cheaper tailors, I will definitely buy another suit from them when we the Surin again and know that I will not shop around for an alternative. They told us that whilst they can make a suit in 24 hours, it is better to allow more time as the construction of the jacket is improved if one has more time. I have read a few reviews about them, and know that others share my opinion. You can contact them at manhattanphuket@yahoo.com or ph 355-741; 355-742

We visited Siem Reap first, staying for 3 nights. I recommend combining Phuket with a trip to Angkor Wat in this order - it is the perfect combination. We stayed in the Heritage Suites Hotel (excellent - see my review for travel tips). If you go, consider very strongly using the services of our driver / guide "Phirun" whom you can contact at phirun_david@yahoo.com. We paid him $100 per day, including tips, which is excellent value.
