“Excellent family resort”
Reviewed February 4, 2009

we stayed 8 days in Allamanda mid january 2009. Had a two bedroom suite laguna view with equipped kitchenette. Although some kitchen equipment was missing, the hotel crew immediately resolved the problems. Very nice pool on laguna side, the restaurant is not as good as the ones in the other laguna hotels or on the beach, but the regular free boat service between all laguna resorts every 20 minutes allows to go easily to the beach or other resorts. Advantage: you can put all on our room number, independently in which of the hotel you stay. Allamand is probably the simplest hotel of the five laguna hotels, but the price/quality ratio was excellent and we had really a great time here. The suite was absolutely clean and nicely decorated. Just be aware that Bangtao Beach and especially the Laguna area is not one of the cheapest on Phuket, but surely one of the nicest places to stay. So the beach restaurants are also slightly more expensive than in other places on Phuket. The Angsana Spa is wonderful with its small bungalows and own privacy, probably even nicer than the Angsana Spa in Grande Sheraton Laguna. If you want to do self-catering, it is a little bit difficult to go to the village for shopping without a car, the free shuttle buses only run between the laguna hotels.

The Allamanda Laguna was a great place to stay! The front desk staff were beyond polite and the room was probably the best and cleanest I've ever stayed in.

There was some trouble with our reservation, the rooms we had booked were not available, but the staff made up for it by giving us complimentary breakfast.

Our rooms were across a pretty busy street from the reception area, restaurant and gift shop, but there was a security guy that would stop traffic so the pedestrians could cross.

The room was extremely clean and well stocked. The A/C and ceiling fan worked great, the view of the pool was fantastic and the complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. There was a free shuttle to some of the restaurants and shopping and a private beach with free water taxi service over to it and there were 2 beautiful pools. The restaurant was cozy with indoor or outdoor seating and the food was good (we only had breakfast).

If you are going to Phuket, this is the place to stay !!!!

Our seventh time here and ninth time on this beach. we still love it.

I like the space. When your come here with the family you have two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living room and kitchen. Its worth the short boat ride to the beach to have all this space
BUT
Oh dear, this is getting very tired now. This year they did give the room a lick of paint. I know this as we had the same room as last year and someone ( not me guv honest) had written "paint me" on the crumbling paint in the wardrobe.

Well the room was painted but the bath needs to be replaced and the furniture is old and the room is dark. we have a lagoon view and that is stupendous.

This year the "hotel" thought they would be busy so In January 08 they tried doubling the prices for us "returning guests". We booked it at the same price as last year though a hotel agent and in booking through an agent we had the ( rather poor) breakfast included in the price.
Many of the Alamanda owners spend 2 months in their apartment and then rent it back to the rental pool. This year there is a big re-organisation taking place and if they lose their "hotel licence" then it may only be available for lettings of one month or more. I am sure the owners wont be happy with that.

This northern end of bang Tao beach is a different world from the southern end. The beaches are not busy even in peak period while the southern end with the Sun Wing and other cheaper hotels does not have the same luxurious feel of the north end. After 9 years ( first two at the Sheraton) we see some of the locals every year. i can understand why they think we are so rich. I asked a waiter what he is paid for his 5 hour shift in a beach restatant and its £1.60.
So when my wife and I pay say £8 for a light lunch and drinks , thats a weeks wages for him.

I would not stay at Lagoona Beach hotel, the hotel has dozens of small shanty shops outisde giving it a cheap and nasty feel. If you want to use the little slide there just go there in your costume with no towell. The Dusit hotel is lovely but I dont want to stay in a little room, I like the space that the (far cheaper) Alamanda offers.

Having read the mixed reviews of this resort, I was a little apprehensive about this property, but decided to go ahead anyway to find out for myself. The Allamanda Laguna Phuket (“Allamanda” in short) is a part of 5 resorts that were developed next to each other, and the ‘Allamanda’ is a distance away from the beach behind the lagoon. This lagoon is shared by other properties like the Canal Village etc.

Our check in was quite a hassle, due to the near-zero English communication skills of the Reception staff. It really irritating that, a resort that touts itself as a property of excellence cannot teach its handful reception staff to speak a level of English that we can comprehend. We suspected that the staff does not even try to speak English: possibly due to their own hagups or internal issues. The check-in process was finally over after about 30 minutes (!) after lots of mis-pronounced English and consequent utter confusion and we proceeded to our allotted unit.

The Unit was attractive (on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 8) with wooden flooring and a King sized bed in the bedroom and a sofa-bed in the living room. The rooms were of pretty good size say about 25 feet by 15 feet in the bedroom. The furniture was nice, if a little dated. The Bathroom was good, however, there was mildew in the tiles of the wall. The Kitchen was well furnished with utensils and a fridge, though the hotplate seemed to have come from a garage sale. The counter tops and the sink were spotlessly clean and there were no ants or other infestations that we noticed.

The letdown was the TV set, which was of at least 5 years vintage and was not a plasma or an LCD. It was only about a 21 inch TV with a DVD player thoughtfully supplied along with it. There were no TV sets in the bedroom either. The closet in the bedroom was large and plentiful space for storage but the electronic safe in the closet did not work. The elevator was running with an expired license!

The resort grounds were well maintained, and we had a unit on the pool side (and not the road side). The Allamanda had two different kind of residences: one set of Units with the reception which overlooked the Lagoon and the other which were at the back across the road and had no view of the lagoon at all. The difference was tremendous: the lagoon view rooms were really good in terms of the view they had while the others, including the one we had, had no real view.

The resort hotel had two or three restaurants, which were ready to burn a hole in our pockets for meals. Since I do not like being fleeced, we regularly went to the Black Cat Restaurant (which is near the resort) for meals and they even had a free pick up/drop off service. To compare prices, a meal for 3 would cost about 2000 Bahts in the resort, which the same would cost us about 800 in the Black Cat. And hats off to Philippe, the owner of the Black Cat: a right down to Earth guy and willing to help his customers. Apart from Black Cat, there is Chavas, a Thai restaurant which also offer the Free pick up and drop off service. The AC thermostat in the room was not working and we failed to get it repaired inspite of talking to the ‘Guest Services’: the technician came twice, and disappeared after their usual ‘one moment’. Maybe they were out of spares! The ‘Guest Services’ staff also had a unhelpful attitude, with someone called Pam advising us that we should just turn off the AC manually if it were to get too cold!

Now, about the main attraction: the beach. The beach can only be reached from Allamanda after taking a 20 minutes boat ride across the Lagoon, and then walking through the Sheraton. The boats officially keep no schedule and it can be quite a bore to wait for the boat while rearing to be at the beach: and sometimes the wait is about 30 minutes simply to get on the boats and then 20 minutes of boat ride. I think this is the most significant negative feature of the resort that we noticed: the beach is really far away. If one wants to walk to the beach, it is a nearly a 45 minutes hefty trek from the Allamanda, through other properties and is not worth it. Once at the Beach, the Allamanda maintains a low profile area where guests can use beach chairs and umbrellas. A sign on the beach could be more helpful as it cannot be noticed immediately. The beach is excellent, with really great vistas that I have not noticed anywhere else in the world: the sea at the bottom of the lush green mountains: amazing! There are restaurants on the Beach, which they charge a premium rate for the food and drinks: but the setting is out of the world and is definitely worth it. The sunset at the beach is not to be missed: nature at its best! Ironically, if one wants to enjoy the beach: he or she is better off staying at the Sheraton, which is right on the beach than staying at the backwaters of the Allamanda.

Finally, a word about the Taxi cartel in the Allamanda. The taxis that pick up passengers from inside the resort premises charge exorbitant rates from the guests, actively encouraged by the Allamanda management who allow them to hover around the bell desk area. Maybe they have a vested interest with the taxi cartel (wink wink). To avoid this blackmail, one has to pick up the free shuttle to the gate, and then take a taxi from the taxi station that is just outside the gate on the left. It may sound crazy, but in many ways, Allamanda reminded me of school where there are people trying to keep you in the school premises and wanting you to do things their way!

Would I want to go back to the Allamanda? Maybe yes, to see the Beach once again. But only if I were to get a unit out front overlooking the lagoon. If not, it might be better just staying at the Sheraton for the same amount of money, not to mention avoiding the pathetic English of the resort staff. Take away the beach, the Allamanda is nothing but a row of townhouses that could be anywhere in the third world and is certainly not deserving of the apparent good rating that they have.

We were booked for a 2 week holiday at the Allamanda and ended up staying only 1 night. We were very relieved when we were able to move over to the Laguna Beach resort where we had a lovely holiday.

The Allamanda is not up to standard. We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite. Although it was recently renovated, they haven't touched the bathrooms. It's old and dirty. The tap water is brown and the shower curtains and baths are horribly stained.

TV reception was really bad and the Allamanda was far away from everything.

The worst was the buffet breakfast the next morning. The cutlery and plates were old and haggard and the food really not up to standard. We decided there and then to move to another hotel.

Don't make the same mistake. Listen to the reviews.

Stayed for 2 weeks with all 4 kids in a 2 bedroom suite. Facilities were excellent, staff were great, very child friendly. There was plenty of activities, many of which were free. Breakfast was the same every day but a lot to choose from. The suite was clean and very spacious with lovely views over golf course. The whole Laguna resort feels very safe and we'll certainly go back. It's not a romantic couple kind of place but for families, it was perfect. Although we're British, we live in Asia and have stayed in a lot of places and this was one of the best. Great value for money.

The following is an extract of my complaint letter to the management of Allamanda, which remains unanswered to the date of this review.

"I must register my unhappiness over the various incidents over our stay at the Allamanda, and trust you would forward my email to your management for their consideration. Should I not receive a satisfactory answer from your side, you can be assured that I would share my unhappiness with even more people, than the immediate group of friends that have already had first hand experience of your hotel's very poor service.

(1) On arrival on 26 July, we were supposed to have 2 vans to pick us up. As one of our members is arriving on another flight, one of your van drivers volunteered to wait for the last passenger, even though we told him that is not required. As he insisted, one of our earlier arriving member stayed on to wait for the last arriving member. What the driver should have done is to use the 1 hour or so, that he had while waiting for the last arriving member, to liaise with our waiting friend. To our surprise, and maybe we should not be after all the list of mistakes, our last 2 members could not find the van driver. What then happened was we were notified of the missed appointment by mobile phone, and I went to the reception to ask for help. And again, not surprisingly, your reception staff could not reach the van driver. Your night manager claimed that we should have made arrangements with the van driver, and that is not their problem. I think you ought to explain this, or let the whole world know that this is the new limousine rule in Phuket Allamanda.

(2) No hot water at the bath. That is so despite repeated notice to your staff.

(3) Refusual to give additional pillows when requested. Saying each guest is only entitled to 2 pillows. Then I say, tell us so, and we will bring our own pillow.

(4) Rusty water during bath.

(5) On 28 July, when our group is coming back using hotel's limousine service, your van lost contact with the BMW car in front. Instead of sending us back to Allamanda, the driver sent us to Laguna Beach Resort. When we pointed out to him, that our destination is Allamanda, he still refused to change course, but chose to call whoever was his contact for instructions. And to our further surprise, he does not know the location of Allamanda, and needed the help of another resort employee to guide him.

(6) On 29 July, on the transfer to the airport, we were informed that there would be 2 vans waiting for us at 7am. By 7.30am, there is still only one van. Your lady manager, can only manage to say that the van is coming. I can only intervene, by raising my voice, demanding that a taxi be called in lieu. I don't like to raise my voice, at all, but the circumstance made me look like a tyrant. If not for my intervention, our people would have missed their flight.

(7) Failure to make good on promise to have 1 night stay deducted."
