Reviewed January 29, 2013

Actually, our recent visit to the Dusit was the sixth in as many years. I would agree with some of the comments that the rooms are getting a little dated but they are well cleaned and have all the necessary facilities. The AC seemed to be stretched in very hot weather. The peaceful view of the beach as the sun goes down is one of the best I have experienced. The other thing that always impresses me is the care and attention that I receive from all the staff and management. It is difficult to single any one department, the pool staff are attentive and cheerful, our room maid was quiet but anything that we mentioned was actioned quickly and efficiently, the front office staff remember your name and always make you feel like an individual. A really relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Sea View room is well worth booking for the sunset

We arrived to the Dusit after spending the first 5 nights of our honeymoon in beautiful krabi, our first impressions of Phuket from the ferry were not great & we were unsure what to expect of the Dusit.

Hotel itself: when we arrived late on a Sunday we were greeted warmly, as we were on honeymoon so were very kindly upgraded to a club room. While the room itself was a great size it's location lacked any privacy & Overlooked La trattoria restaurant where people could have breakfast/lunch/dinner. If we had the curtains open they could see into our room quite clearly & we could hear conversations etc from the restaurant. When we asked about this we were told that no ground floor room is private. They did offer us a room of a lower grade upstairs but it was smaller & quite a distance away so we stuck with the original. I agree with other comments about the hotel being dated but it didn't bother us so much.
Pros:
Free wifi throughout the complex was great
Lovely & well kept grounds
Great beach
Plenty loungers by the pool & on the beach
Good variety in fitness room
Lovely pleasant staff throughout the hotel
Good breakfast variety & lovely outdoor setting
Plenty water given in the rooms & great housekeeping service
Shuttle service

Cons
We were on honeymoon so we felt this was more of a family hotel, if you chose to be near the pool then you had to accept there would be lots of children. There was however plenty loungers on the beach or in the gardens. It would have been nice to have had a 2nd pool in a resort that size.
We felt all the restaurants in the resort were very expensive for what was on offer & when you add on 10% service & then an additional 7% vat the costs add up. You even had to pay service if you walked to the pool bar to get an ice cream even though there was no service involved. As a result we ate outside the resort every night except for the first night.
Room position for us & it was a bit noisy as you could hear everything in the corridors outside
For the price we paid for accommodation we did expect a more up to date resort with better facilities/decor
Check out was complicated, our credit card had been blocked for 2000 Thai baht per night (despite the fact we had paid the accommodation up front 100%) which we were not informed of & the explanation about their billing process was complicated.
Just worth keeping in ind if you are using a credit card a lot while travelling.

We had not done enough homework in advance & were not aware the hotel was part of a 'complex' as such. We arrived late in the evening so it was not until the next day that we got to have a look around. The laguna complex as such reminded me of a gated complex & this was so different from what we had experienced in krabi so we felt very much like we were In a resort which could have been anywhere in the world & not necessarily Thailand. Having said that for some this is exactly what they want from a holiday so it really is each to his/her own. We would prefer a more private, smaller resort than a large complex.

There is a shuttle bus & a ferry that goes between the different Laguna hotels & both are free. If you take the shuttle to Laguna waters you can walk 5 mins into the local village/town where there are a number of restaurants which are much more reasonable than the hotel prices. There are also massage places, a 7 11 & some other grocery shops where you can get food, drinks etc.. You can also use the shuttle/ferry to get to other resorts & eat in their restaurants or drinks in bars etc if you'd like a change of scenery. However if you walk along the beach north or south from the hotel you will see plenty bars & restaurants to Eat/drink at. we ate at lotus on the beach, very nice, the black cat in town, totonka (yum), the others we ate at are not worth mentioning as they were not positive. We really liked a bar called Golden sand beach run by Mancuin & his family, turn right on the beach from the Dusit & keep walking, go past lotus, Tony's & keep going for a little bit more, on the right you will come to a small bar with blue loungers & navy, red & white umbrellas and there are also yellow & blue umbrellas by the tables near the bar. We had lovely cocktails while watching beautiful sunsets & we preferred to give the money to a young man like this rather than to another large resort.

We did go to the banyan tree one night for cocktails & they were gorgeous but quite expensive!

If we had our time over we would probably have gone for koh lanta rather than phuket

Lots good about the Dusit but it really depends on what you are looking for & it wasn't really for us on honeymoon but it might suit families quite well.

This was one of the most relaxing holidays we had last year. We went for a family wedding with 3 children under the age of 5 years old and it was just perfect. For a small cost, we hired 2 nannies for the whole week. One nanny stayed with us the whole week and got to know our kids and the routine. We would have them for 6-8 hours each day usually in the afternoon, so we got help with bath and dinner time and then they would stay on to watch the kids and put them to bed whilst my husband and I had a dinner out. It was just bliss. They really loved out kids and looked after them extremely well esp the baby.

The rooms are smallish and basic but clean and tidy. The food was world class including a fantastic italian and thai restaurant within the resort (and we have eaten at some michelin 3 star places around the world). The pool is shallow and it is easy to manage young kids in it. The kids club is small and fairl basic the nannies were so enthusiatic that the children really enjoyed spending time there playing games and doing craft. I wouldn't rely on the kids club though if you have children older than about 8.

The wedding was also very well run and again the food was amazing. I would highly recommend this resort for both families with young children and if you were a bride looking for a stressfree beautiful wedding venue. If you get a chance, organise to release the thai lanterns at night on the beach. It was definitely a highlight.

I was invited along with friends on a trip and they choose the dust thani. I would never choose this place. I could see how this place would have been a nice place when it was first built. But now it's just out dated.

Service was good, the location was fine, nothing special nearby except other hotels.

Would I go back? Probably not.

Don't usually comment on stuff but felt that this warranted a comment.
Arrived from UK and originally our room was advised as being too small with an 11 and 9 year old in tow and to be honest the room was dated, however we were offered an upgrade deal to a suite on the 3rd floor including mini bar, cocktails in the evening and afternoon tea.
Brilliant stay - Heavenly beach and great staff. Never left the Complex as we were totally relaxed.
Could have done with a couple more nights.

Room Tip: For Families go for the landmark suite. Worth the extra or ocean front rooms.

We spent a week at the Dusit Thani at the end of November, and couldnt have asked for more. The hotel is in a beautiful setting, right on the beach, and with extensive gardens. Every staff member we had contact with was charming, friendly and helpful. The hotel was fairly quiet, but it suited us fine as that was just what we wanted. Food in the hotel restaurants was good, and there are several more options within easy walking distance along the clean, well maintained beach. Best by far was the Lotus, serving fresh and delicious Thai food. There are also lots of drink and snack huts on the beachfront open during the day. Many activities on offer - we joined the cycle ride (harder work than I expected!), played golf a couple of times, and walked into the local town for a look around. Lots of taxis available, and the hotel runs a shuttle bus service. I used Phuket Shuttle to book our taxi transfers to and from the airport, and would use them again. Overall, we had a wonderful holiday, and will definitely stay at the Dusit Thani again.

If you are looking for a great beach resort for the family, that's it!
Great location on the beach with loads of space so it doesn't feel crowded. We tried some of the activities ( golf, volleyball, table tennis, petang etc). Stuff very friendly and hotel restaurants quite good.
