Surin is now the far and away the ugliest beach I have seen on Phuket in six years of visits – it makes the commonly derided Patong look like the jewel of South East Asia.

I understand that there is a Thai regulation stating that beach loungers/umbrellas can only be placed on a limited percentage of the beach front. On every other beach I’ve visited, this is very obviously adhered to, but on Surin beach the line of nasty furniture is sprawling and continuous.

I suspect that someone has got clever and got around the regulations by using cheap nasty metal and canvas reclining camp beds and (I assume) clearing them away overnight as they are so light and flimsy – unlike the usual solid and comfortable cushioned white plastic beds used on beaches and beside pools the world over.

Surin reminds me of the Spanish Costas during the cheap holiday package frenzy of the seventies – thoroughly tasteless. I feel genuinely sorry for anyone that holidays in Surin without their own transport to travel to the stunning beaches that Phuket has to offer, for example Layan, Nai Thon, Nai Yang for example – or even Kamala just over the hill.

Loved this beach. So beautiful you definitely need to visit. Sea and sand perfect. Lovely loungers. Lots of choice for food, snacks and drinks.

This used to be a popular tourist beach with a wide choice of restaurants set behind the beach road. There were all destroyed by the local authority and nothing there now, though sun bed vendors have moved in. If you want a quiet beach then better going to Layan. If busy then nearby Bangtao.

Seen 5 beaches in phuket. This one the best. Street food and a beautiful sunset is the best. And try to swim in the 5th floor swimming pool in the surin beach resort in the end of the beach. Best view.
