“Very nice, but know what you are getting into...”
Reviewed July 21, 2008

The Sala Phuket is blessed with a friendly and effective staff, excellent restaurant, well maintained spa and pool, and sharp accommodations. My girlfriend and I stayed in a Sala Pool Villa and have generally been very impressed. What I did not fully appreciate is the relative inconvenience of an outdoor bathroom area. Perhaps it is a function of the time of year that we visited (July, rainy season), but one annoyance that one may not fully consider is being bitten by mosquitoes while one is defenseless on the toilet, brushing one's teeth, or shaving one's beard. To be clear, this is not the Sala's fault by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a tradeoff against the otherwise pleasant of being able to shower and dress outside.

All in all, an excellent experience, but this is a downside that I believe is worth noting, particularly given the Sala's price point.

Hi Holidaymakers,
We stayed in a Sala Pool Villa at the start of March for 8 Days. Prior to going we were trying to get as much info as we could gather, so we will provide as much as we can here. If you get bored with details then we will just say "The Sala Phuket was everything we hoped for, romantic seclusion and five star service. A completely relaxing Holiday with Villas that make you not want to go out anywhere." For those who like detail, please read on.

First things first - We booked online using the Sala Phuket Website "www.salaphuket.com" and received their seasonal special, which is great value. Our Visa Card has not been hit with any unexpected charges, so this does seem to be quite safe and definitely the cheapest way to book. The Sala Driver met us at the Airport with a very nice and comfortable vehicle and a great smile. Note - Don't go outside the airport terminal, they will meet you inside. You just have to walk further down inside the arrival hall.

On arriving at the Sala Phuket you notice that it's very different to, at least any other place we have stayed. It's simply beautiful and elegant everywhere you look, but not at all off-putting or intimidating. The staff are very friendly, with some of the best smiles you will see in Thailand. You are welcomed by at least 2 staff and provided with a welcome drink whilst paperwork is attended to.

Walking into your Villa (an experience which gets better every time you do it) you will be given an introduction to all of the features and things you need to know by your host. You will also find your bags waiting for you. These Villa's are completely private. Other people can not see in. Your daybed, shower, bath, basins and toilet are all outside which is something we had never experienced. The daybed, bath, toilet and basins do have a high roof above, but if it rains, you are showering in the rain. It's hard to explain how free and comfortable this feels. It is achieved with a lot of attention to design and the outdoor area felt very palatial.

The bedroom is very comfortable with bi-fold doors looking directly onto your pool. We opened all our doors during a storm to watch the rain falling in the pool from our bed. That was an experience to remember. The minibar, cups, plates, coffee machine ..etc are in an area behind the bed. The TV is a good sized flatscreen and the quality stereo has a USB port to plug in your MP3 Player or memory stick. (Don't forget your USB cable). The king sized bed was so comfortable that we have immediately had to replace ours when we got home.

Swimming in your own private pool (Bathing Suit optional) is fantastic. The water is always nice (Even in the morning when its a little cooler) The pool has 2 wet edges which are stunning, is possibly 1.6 Meters Deep and is large enough to have a good swim. We didn't try the 2 large resort pools but spent a lot of time in our own.

The restaurant has some of the best food you could hope to find and is serviced by first rate staff. As with other staff at the resort, these are very happy people. English can sometimes be difficult but the staff are only too happy work through any small communication problems. They are particularly delighted when they pronounce difficult words correctly (Prawns is apparently quite difficult to say). Compared to a vast majority of restaurants we have frequented in Western Australia, it is amazing to have such High quality food on your table within 10-15 minutes of sitting down. And we do mean "High Quality". Just as amazing is that the food is no more expensive than your average Australian cafe, in fact for Thai dishes, it is a lot cheaper.

The bar next to the restaurant has some very comfortable daybeds overlooking the ocean. This is a great place to sit and have a drink. The bar is also a visual masterpiece. (See attached photo). We recommend getting a tasting plate of tappas. You get a great range and can then choose your favourites from there.

We did not visit the spa as this is something we can do in Perth (Possibly cheaper), but at the massage hut on the beach next door you can get 1hour for 400Baht. There are also a couple of restaurants (roadside) and souvenir stands near the massage hut. This is also the location of the taxi stand.

For any real shopping you will need to hire a Taxi to get to Patong or Phuket Town. Patong seems to be getting more crowded and less friendly these days, but a 3 hour round trip to Phuket Town will cost you 1200Baht and is quite enjoyable. That's about 25 Mins each way and a couple of hours shopping (While the taxi waits for you.) The guys on the Taxi stand are very friendly, not overly pushy and have a fixed menu of trips so you can see how much it will cost.

The problem we had leaving the resort to go shopping was that when we returned from Patong, we felt ripped off that we had lost a day in our wonderful villa swimming in our private pool. This could be a problem if you wanted to do lots of shopping as leaving the comforts of the villa required a lot of motivation. On at least 1 day we surfaced for breakfast, had a massage and then didn't leave the villa again after 10:30AM (Room service is very reasonably priced :-).

In summary, the Sala Phuket was the ideal location for a romantic getaway. The room, the service and the food were all first rate. We will holiday here again as soon as we possibly can.

We had nine days at Sala, it is a first class hotel, staff were excellent, we stayed in a villa, they provide beach bag, flip flops, surong, beach mats, and hat. Our towels and sheets were changed every day. There is only one restaurant though, but Sala do provide a courtesy car to take you to the Marriott next door, which has nine restaurants. If you want peaceful and relaxing this is the ideal place. We would go back.

We came to Sala after having had a terrible experience at another resort in Phuket. We stayed in a Sala Pool Villa, which was fantastic, especially the outdoor area (bathroom and large private pool). Very friendly staff and perfect location.

My husband land I have just returned from Phuket and had the most amazing stay at Sala Phuket. I am not one to write reviews unless truly thrilled (or disappointed beyond belief) but I feel compelled to share our wonderful experience at this outstanding resort....no wonder they made the Conde Nast 2008 Hot List...one of the reasons we actually chose to stay there.

The resort is sophisticated yet unpretentious, which is both rare and refreshing. The staff were friendly and genuinely accommodating while never obtrusive or overly fussy. Our Sala Pool Villa was spectacular - spacious, well designed, very private and slightly edgy yet extremely comfortable with lots of nice little personal touches. We did not see the other rooms so can't compare them but they are great value considering what a pool villa would cost elsewhere.

I've seen a number of posts on how remote the resort is and have to disagree. The location is just remote enough to be well away from the crowds but you're close enough to the hustle and bustle if you're looking for a day of shopping or a fun night out (we had several). Transfers are easy to arrange and don't cost an arm and a leg.

While the grounds do still need to mature a bit, the overal setting is gorgeous. The restaurant and bar at the resort have a stunning beachfront location and are surprisingly affordable for a hotel of this caliber, as was the minibar and room service - great when you want to make the most of a balmy evening around your own pool without feeling ripped off (what a novelty!!). The food was great, the ingredients fresh and the choice abundant.

The spa facilities were divine, as were the treatments and here too the staff were able to find just the right balance between excellent service and respect for your privacy.

All in all, an absolutely outstanding resort. Well designed, well staffed, obviously well managed and more than worth it...we will be back!!

We just returned from a great stay at Sala Phuket. We were looking for somewhere new to stay for the long weekend and decided on Sala after reading other reviews. We weren't disappointed!

Originally we booked a balcony room, but after seeing the Garden Pool Villa we decided to go for that. The room design was beautiful and with the pool right outside our room it made us want to lounge around and really use our room instead of it just being a place to sleep. The design of the rooms, indoor and outdoor space makes for a completely private experience, how amazing to wake up in the morning and climb out of the feather bed right into the pool?!

Having said that, we did leave our room to go out to the two main pools. Again, the design was fantastic as they're both huge inifinity pools. The first done in black terrazo with crystal clear water, kept warm from the sun. The second pool was slighty more shaded and had shallow areas to lay in as well as a much deeper end. The second pool has a deck with beautiful cabanas, perfect for lounging on.

The resturant was great and the food, both the Thai and western menus, very well done. I think I was most impressed with the breakfast which was included with our room. On our first morning we went down to the restaurant expecting to see the usuall buffet but were pleasantly surprised when we found out we could order anything off of the beautiful menu. My favourite, which I repeated every morning, were the pancakes with fresh mango and vanilla whipped cream. I guess the only downside might be the fact that there is only one restaurant. The menu is varied enough to keep it interesting but we opted to have a couple dinners outside the property and took a taxi down to Surin beach to have the barbeque at the Twin Palms and a great dinner at the Amanpuri.

The spa was very proffesional, beautifully designed and a rela treat (I reccomend the Oriental Foot Massage after a walk on the beach!)

I can't reccoment the Sala more highly if your after a relaxing, lazy holiday. It's beautiful, private and the staff are always there if you need them, but never intrusive. It's always nice to be greeted with a smile and we always were at Sala. If you need action, or nightlife then you probably won't be looking to stay here.

We will definitley be back!

My partner & I just returned from a 1 week stay at this resort & have been raving about it ever since. We had visited Phuket before & on recommendation of a friend who had also visited the resort, we decided to go.

Location is private, serene & breathtaking. The design & accommodation is 'cutting edge' yet able to retain the warmth & character of what is Thailand. The staff were attentive, yet not in your face. From our arrival to our departure, the entire week was truly first class in every way.

The waters edge restaurant & bars were unique. The food was amongst the best we had tasted. we have already made plans for us to return later this year.

Our compliments to both the management & staff. This is an outstanding resort well worthy of a visit or stay. We look forward to our return visit.
