Other reviews have gone in to as much detail as necessary. Suffice it to say that this is an autonomous resort north of the airport in Mai Chao, 19 miles from busy Phuket, situated in a well maintained domain and well appointed with Thai, Italian, Grill and breakfast/lunch restaurants and Deli such that you never have to leave your relaxing environment for a day. Pools are plentiful, spacious and clean, the beach is a stone's throw away, many families with young children frequent the children's pool area. There is a modern village a few minutes walk away with a pub and a more authentic Thai restaurant and a money exchange booth. Rooms are delightfully arranged as befits a luxury Marriott.

Room Tip: We had a garden room which was a few minutes walk from the reception, but very quiet and only 3 minu...

It had been 23 years since my last visit to Phuket but some friends had arranged for us to spend a long weekend there at this resort just 15 minutes from the airport. The resort is a sprawling complex of very tastefully designed buildings with a large hotel, villas and family suites all carefully laid out in lush, landscaped, tropical gardens. This would make a great family resort. Service was excellent and the food was good. Will go back anytime.

Room Tip: Sea facing villas are best if you like the sun; otherwise most others look into lush vegetation.

While the entire staff at the hotel truly is amazing, the bar staff at Sala is something better than I have seen anywhere. Sue and her crew seemed to go above and beyond for me but in looking around, they were able to provide the same service to everyone else in the lounge. They made every time I went to a have a drink or a bite to eat (and I went every day I was at the hotel in my almost two week stay) a truly incredible experience. The drinks were overpriced yes, but because of the service I kept on coming back.

When I come back to Phuket, they will be the reason why I will stay at the JW.

This Hotel was highly recommended by many friends with kids, Its a beautiful resort, Very large clean rooms pools kids club etc, if your looking to stay at the hotel and go no where else then this is great, but it can get a bit boring, the hotel buggy can you take you up the road to a small shopping area very small has a couple of shops, ice cream and coffee shops but other than that there is nothing around. The food at the coffee shop was better than the food at the resort in my opinion. The breakfast buffet had a big selection, but we had to wait a few times as it was quite busy.

Our room was facing one of the pool areas, i was impressed at the size of it, if i was more organized i would have asked to stay MUCH closer to the facilities as with two children it was a hassle walking back and forth to the room with both kids. (age 1 and 2 at time)

Service was very good and they did look after us , it was our daughters first birthday and they had sent many things to the room for her fruit bowl, cake, cards etc which was very sweet of them.

They also had a baby elephant walking near the hotel which went into the water which was quite sweet, they also have Thai ladies offering massages on the beach.. Note the beach is not a private beach to the hotel it is a public one.

Negatives The beach was too wavy so we couldnt use it which was a real shame and the children's pool had WAY too many flies around it, needs a good wash down and not much to do outside the hotel.

very good value for money

My expectations where a bit high as so many people highly recommended it, the same year few months before we went to Philippines Cebu Shangri La and this was better for us. Nice beach, shaded childrens pool (although smaller pool) nice grounds etc

Happy Holidaying

Room Tip: ask for sea views and if you have children ask to stay close to lift areas for access

The hotel grounds were absolutely gorgeous, and the service was attentive and very responsive. The rooms were nice and clean, and the food that we ordered was tasty. My only complaint was the beach. It's not what you expect when you think of Phuket. They didn't even have beach chairs set out at the beach. It you're going for a beach vacation, you may want to think of another spot, but if your primary goal is to get away to relax, this is a great place.

Room - Nice sized room with two double sized beds with plenty of room for our family of 2 adults and 3 small children. We had a garden room that looked out over the garden where they do the circus training. Room 302. Excellent location, as it was close to the lobby, the breakfast room, the Kid's club, and the main pool.

The grounds were nicely maintained, and the whole property seems very spacious. It is on the beach, tho as I understand it, the beach is part of a marine preserve, so the hotel is not allowed to put out beach chairs or serve the beach. So you are pretty much on your own at the beach, but that also meant it wasn't very crowded. The waves are a bit much for the wee ones, but the sand was decent, and the water was warm.

There is a local restaurant just past the Out of the Blue bar, with much better prices on food and beer. The cheapest beer on property, strangely, was the room minibar (100 baht for the small sized beer, compared to 150 at the pool bar). 100 baht buys the super large sized beer (almost twice the smaller beers) at the local restaurant.

The hotel offers a complimentary 2 hrs of bike rental, with kids and adult bikes. They give you a map of the local area, and tell you how to get to the lake that you can ride around. The little kid bikes (with training wheels) were poorly maintained with bald tires and training wheels that weren't attached well - we tried half an hour to get it just right, but in the end, gave up. The adult bikes were well maintained, and they had older kid sized bikes with no training wheels that seemed well maintained as well. I highly recommend the bike ride around the local lake.

The gym was nice as well, tho, with the heat, the AC didn't seem like enough in there. They provide complimentary bottled water at the gym, so no need to bring your own!

The Kids Zone was FANTASTIC! The variety of activities on offer was outstanding, and our kids just loved it there. We had the occasion to book a couple different babysitters for our youngest, as kids younger than 4 require parental supervision while in the Kids club. You also can't leave the premises if you are leaving your children there, unless you get a babysitter. Not all the activities were free, but they weren't outrageously expensive either (about $10-$15 for most, except for the circus/trapeze training, which was more). Still, the kids were never bored, they popped popcorn for the movie time, the art activities were stellar, and the staff was A+. Special thanks to Chayatip, who also served as our babysitter for a full day - our kids LOVED her!

Now on to the bad part - the Pools. First day there, we go out around 10am, and realize we can't get a seat ANYWHERE around the main pool - there are simply not enough chairs to accommodate all the hotel guests when the hotel is full. People start reserving seats around 7am. After we realized this, we started doing the same, and no staff ever did anything about it.

We even tried the North and South pools, and the same thing. I do have to say, the swim up bar at the south pool was a real treat for the kiddos. They loved to go there just to get a smoothie, and the service was good at the bar there. The depth at the North and South pools were a bit deeper, minimum of 1.2 m. So if you have wee ones, unless you are holding onto them, this is not the place for you. The main pool was fantastic for the little ones, as it had varying depths, including very shallow for the youngest. Fountains, slide, etc were interesting enough to entertain the kids for several hours each day.

Just think there should be a lifeguard on duty at each of the pools. But maybe without lifeguards, parents don't get complacent and watch their kids more carefully.

The restaurants were ok food wise, but very expensive for Thailand. The Thai restaurant was really disappointing to me - I love Thai food, but this had nothing exceptional to offer. The Andaman Grill was very very good, but also very very expensive. Our meal for 2 adults was about 8000 baht. Yikes! My steak was very good, but that kind of money will get me an even more stellar meal at Ruths Chris or Mortons in the States.

The breakfast was really disappointing. Pretty much the same thing each day. We were there for 7 days, and by the 3rd day, you just want something else. They may have varied one of the bread baskets, but that was the only change. Variety was pretty sad.

I guess i'm getting more and more perturbed by the exporting of US and European prices at all of these destinations. I'm in Thailand, for goodness sakes! The fleecing of tourists is out of hand, and very much alive here at the JW. I don't mind paying these prices, but the service and quality and overall experience should match. They did not here. I expected more from the JW (given the name), and felt like I paid for a JW but got just a Marriott. This is my second Marriott experience in the space of 2 months, and I have the feeling the brand is declining. I remember my terrific JW experience in Hawaii and was expecting that. This experience was far below expectation.

BTW, there are some local restaurants (we didn't try them) by the entrance of the lake. I'd try those if you don't have real young kiddos with you (hard to get them there).

Also, the Bentleys restaurant at Turtle Village as very good value for money. Very western, good portion sizes, and prices were not as expensive as the JW. Service was a bit sketchy sometimes, but overall good. And free Wifi too. Turtle Village is a short walk, or you can take the shuttle there for free. We walked a few times with our young kids, and it was easily done. Nice ice cream shop there too.

Maiko beach doesn't have alot around it besides resorts, so if you are looking for night life outside of the resorts, this is not the place for you.

Last thing to mention, they pushed our two double beds together, but didn't give us a blanket that covered the whole bed. SO with the aircon on, someone on the bed was cold. They only provided a sheet to cover the whole bed, but not two duvets. We made do and didn't ask, but this is something housekeeping here should have taken care of without needing to be prompted. A blanket to cover the entire bed should be standard protocol.

This was our our 3rd stay at this hotel and we had booked for 7 days. Our room, the 1 bedroom suite overlooking the sea was fabulous and it comfortably accommodated the four us including our 12 and 9 year old. The room was spacious and the returning balcony and a lovely covered whirlpool from which you can gaze at the sea ahead. Internally it had traditional thai decoration with a large surround sound TV and comfortable beds. The bathroom as expected was large and well fitted out.
The hotel is large with a resort type functionality, ideal for those that would seek for a get way and laze around the beach or pool. The kids club has been renovated since our last stay and the our kids really enjoyed being there.
But if you want to see the rest of the island or venture out to eat then be warned its in middle of nowhere and it will cost a big taxi fare to get to Patong beach for example.
The hotel has 4 restaurants, catering Japanese, Italian and international cusines. The staff at these respective restaurants are very polite and nothing ever seems too much for them. We have managed to get to know a fair few of them and all are most respectiful and happy to see us returning to the hotel. The food is great and the breakfast is fabulous with the variety and quality on offer. But then there is but....the prices...............!!! Everything item was so ridiculously over priced that a simple dinner for 4 not including any alcohol and limted starters would set you back in excess of USD100.00. So when you add 2 meals a day over the cost of the of room, its a painful exercise one you have to pay the bill on your exit. And the fact you are so far from any local restaurants leaves you with no alternatives. Furthermore, with the occupancy running over 90%, with a lot group bookings, i suggest early bookings at the resturants or you're left with room service.
All in all, a great hotel, but very overly priced!! So for the faint hearted be warned!
