“Beautifully Designed, not fully operational til Sept 2010”
Reviewed August 11, 2010

It's my kid's and my b-day week so my partner splashed out on a ocean view villa. Direct access to the beach and pool. Resort is still only part opened, very quiet (which was what we wanted) and perfect for couples looking for getaway from crowds. A bit quiet for my kid but managed to utilize the kid's club at affiliate JW Marriott. The first night (as we arrived very late) was spent in a deluxe room, which was by itself totally serviceable--large bathroom, balcony etc. But the villa had great views of the sea from the bed... Mai Khao is quite wild at this time of the year with big waves amd ripping tides. Was very windy as well. The quietness of the place made our holiday feel like a dream. No hard sell like at the other more popular beaches.
Staff was ok... eager to please but most lack serviceable english language skills. The front office manager (a lady, but missed her name) went the extra mile when I had a minor complaint before the move to the villa.
Breakfast was ok... surprisingly not included, but the manager comped us eventually. The smaller spread is made up by not having to rush with the crowd for food/seats.
Breakfast room also has amazing views from the second floor.
The whole resort is very dependant on natural ventilation and details. Thus when it rains, the most unlikeliest places get wet. Not the rooms itself for now, but the lobby and all. With the marble/stone flooring, it can get slippery.
Overall I really enjoyed the stay. However, i think partly it's because we had the premier accommodations there. There is a marked difference in the treatment from the staff when we were staying i the deluxe room as opposed to the villa.
There is a water park called Splash Jungle for those who are looking for a bit of a thrill. Good fun! And only 10 mins away by car.

It was nice soft opening resort, they welcomed us with drink and towel.
the lady who serve us at check in desk escort us to the room with buggy cart.
we stayed in Villa close to the beach. The villa is very brand new with
every equipment and vanities. Entertainment unit has DVD player, with nice
LCD TV 36inch and big sound system unit, we can watch from sofas or bed.

Bathtub is Huge can fit 4 people, shower is seperated and has two wash sink.
outside in the garden has our own private swimming pool, eventhough was not
big but is enough to relax with two relaxing chair for sunbathing. moreover
there is a shower fountain next to swimming pool, All the bathroom vanities
are modern and elegant.

Close by there is a lot of stands selling food and drink near the beach.
Sirinath national park also in close distance. Foods in the hotel restaurant
are beautifully decorated and taste suit our delight.

This hotel was on a soft opening and doesn't open fully until the Autumn. It's a great hotel, 10 minutes north of the airport and an hours drive to the nightlife and craziness of Patong.

The Renaissance has everything I look for in a hotel. It has a fantastic wow factor with stunning ocean views from the reception, a great spa and modern kids club. The hotel also has 4 bars and restaurants, my favorite being the sand box bar and restaurant, next to the pool and overlooking the beach, really friendly staff who actually care and try and make your stay more enjoyable, and a fantastic infinity pool with built in jacuzzi (best way I can describe it).

I was inspecting hotels for a travel company, and I thought the entry level deluxe rooms were fantastic, being bright, well designed and spacious and the best standard rooms I saw out of 22 hotels on the island. I stayed in a one bed pool villa which didn't disappoint. Extra spacious, full glass shower, private plunge pool with 2 sun beds and terrace.

This is a very good hotel, but it is in a very quiet location, with great facilities and fantastic staff who couldn't do enough to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. I will be returning and bringing my family with me.

We have been coming to Mai Khao since 2003 and have seen the growth. We are Marriott Beach Club owners. We booked the night before our check in at our time share. The hotel is in a soft opening. It was quite empty except for quite a few Thai families from Bangkok.
We booked the standard room with breakfast. The room is lovely, with a large very comfortable bed and flat screen TV. The room colors are bright, reminding me of the sand, sea and sun. Very nice. The bathroom is very large with a huge bath and large shower. The balcony looked out on the roofs of the villas/suites and the sand below.
The breakfast was good, wonderful fresh fruit and breads to choose from plus ordering off the menu. My crab benedict was delicious made to order.
The staff is wonderful, very smiling and welcoming. They couldn't do enough for you.
The pool loungers look dreadful to me.....they are practically on the ground. I will post photos, you'll see what I mean.
We walked by the villas/suites, they look very nice, with a private sliding wooden gate you can open or close and a plunge pool.
At the time we were there, end of May, the gym and spa were not open. There was only one restaurant and one bar open.
I would recommend the hotel as long as you know it isn't fully operational, plus I would suggest splurging on the separate villa/suite, the cost wasn't much higher.

If you're looking to get away from it all, this is the place to be!! We were under the impression that the resort was fully opened, it wasn't.... but that probably added to the overall experience. It was like having our own private resort and staff! The beach is beautiful though the sand isn't as soft as other beaches in Phuket. The bonus part of the beach is that it's practically deserted!!
The hotel is in a somewhat remote area but they will call a shuttle (for a fee) should you wish to go sightseeing, you can also get taxis to and from town (prices are negotiable and not much more than the cost of the shuttle).
On any given day, after sightseeing or a day of snorkeling it was wonderful to return to the peace of our hotel. I highly recommend the upgrade to a villa with private plunge pool for a romantic getaway.

This is a brand new hotel and it isn't in full operation yet, hence my review is based on the experience I had during our stay in the soft opening period. Some of the staff are newly recruited and newly trained and so they may not be as efficient as long time, well trained staff of other resorts but you can see their sincerity in trying to accommodate your needs. We stayed in Bedroom Suite with connecting Deluxe and were very satisfied. The Suite has a very spacious bathroom with built-in closet. The big separated living room with small pantry and dining table is perfect for family activities. Other facilities of the resort, once completed, include big swimming pool with jacuzzi, kids' club with pool, business center, meeting rooms, bars and restaurants, gym and spa. Unfortunately, the sea is quite rough with steep and uneven seabeach. During monsoon season it is impossible to swim in the sea but I don't really know if it's ok during summer or not. There's a buggy service to bring you to other luxurious hotels nearby where you can choose to have delightful meals at a price. Otherwise there's a few local food stalls less that 1 km away by foot where you can have fresh seafoods at a much cheaper price. Since Mai Khao Beach is up north of Phuket island, it's a bit costly to take a local taxi/van to downtown for an evening outing. It's more worth it to take a day tour around Phuket and enjoy a bit of your night life before returning to the hotel. But for those who seek quietness and solitude, Renaissance Phuket is definitely the place to be considered.
