“Lovely - but expensive!”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

We have just returned from a week spent here after a few days in the Anantara Riverside Bangkok. Beautiful large villa with reasonably big swimming pool and outside 'sala'. Lovely to spend time there in the afternoons as a change from the beach and pool. Stunningly good breakfast - everything you desired. The staff remembered your preferences after the first day and brought freshly prepared mangoes and our coffee without asking! The only slight niggle is that we would have preferred the fridge to be in the main villa building rather in the outside sala room as it was a bit of a bore getting things from it each time if you wanted early morning tea with milk (small cartons provided). The only downside really was the price of the pool bar and restaurants - they were extortionate! Most meal menus were prices at about £80 per person and drinks and snacks were equally as expensive (other guests felt the same). I think a lot of people probably ate elsewhere - possibly the large J W Marriott hotel next door. Fortunately, we found the usual beach shacks next door and ate wonderful stir-fries and barbecued prawns there each night for roughly £15 for both of us!. There are also beach shacks the other side of the Mariott hotel.

There is a small modern shopping mall next door and a mini mart in the basement so that you can buy drinks, wine, etc at reasonable prices. This is an isolated resort although there are signs of development happening behind the trees further along the beach.

Be aware that on arrival, you will be asked to give your credit card details so that 1,000Bt (£100) could be credited against it for each day - if you didn't use it up they said it would be credited back to your account within 2-3 weeks! As we didn't intend using the spa or eating/drinking there after the first day, we declined and paid cash. We have had problems in the past in Thailand where a sum is taken from your account on arrival and it was difficult to get it returned.

We also felt that it was possibly an unsuitable resort for children although there were plenty there! The pools in the villas are deep and the children do inevitably disrupt breakfast - a shame. It would also be noisy if a family with children were in the next door villa and you wanted a quiet afternoon in yours!

Room Tip: We overlooked the lagoon in Room 66 which was very quiet but a few minutes walk from the beach. Bic...

We stayed at the pool villas for 3 nights - NOT ENOUGH!

The villa is really big - perfect for us to hideaway in it. Hubs and I was there with our 9 months baby. The resort is very baby friendly. They prepared a baby cot, baby bottle sterilizer, baby bath tub and even prepared a set of baby amenities for us! At the restaurants, the staffs are very attentive to our baby as well. They have freshly made yoghurt for our baby and he loved it very much!

The pool inside the pool villa is really nice for dips and to play with our baby. Sometimes the water is quite cold because it's the monsoon season whilst we were there but there's quite a big tub next to the pool which we fill up with warm water and he's more than happy to play in it while we dip in the big pool!

Mai Khao is far from Phuket town/Patong beach (abt 45mins - 1hr) but we did not intend to go out. We just wanted to stay in and enjoy family time together hence this place is perfect!

They also have bicycle free for rent {first come first serve} which is really good too!

There are some street food available during the day. The grilled chicken is really good!

Will we be back? You bet!

The sand is white and clean with not wavy sea. It is much quiet than patong. Every villa has a private pool and it is large. It is suitable for a hideaway holiday. There are massage ladies along the seaside and the area along next hotel, with 400 baht per hour. The price is reasonable for a place near these luxury hotel. Except there is not much choice for dining, I would recommend this hotel for couple.

We stayed for 7 nights in one of the pool villas as a Spa package deal on their website. The room was so great, the pool was not too big, but just the perfect size for two people and what I loved was the jacuzzi bath tub outdoors - perfect for a romantic evening! The service was great and their breakfast was so delightful that we put the alarm on just not to miss it! The Spa center here is an absolute must! I particularly enjoyed the Thai herbal massage - it was really something extra ordinary. The territory of the hotel is so huge - they even have bikes that guests can use - and we used this opportunity for me to learn how to cycle! It was superb! Their restaurant is great and the pool with the bar is outstanding! It is located rather far from everything, but you can rent a car through their concierge and explore the island by yourself, which is what we did. In the evenings there isn't much to do in the area at all, but then again, it is perfect for a relaxing, romantic getaway! I only have the best memories of this place and would love to come again, only if they will allow for us to bring our pet!

Room Tip: our pool villa was amazing! don't hesitate to book it

we were greeted by a staff from Anantara upon arrival at the airport. car transfer took a mere 15 minutes. we were attended to by Bang from reception, who explained the check-in procedures clearly. Bang then drove us in a buggy to our villa and carefully & patiently showed us the facilities and amenities in the villa. she also mentioned that we could ride a bike around the Anantara property (green & brown coloured ones) during our entire stay.
the villa is so luxurious and pretty! the bed was decorated with leaves and flowers, welcoming our stay. there was a fruit tray, biscuits and this drink called rosella, tasted a bit like ribena. villa has an indoor sofa area to relax and read. it is also equipped with ipod player with speaker all around the villa.
little touches like providing bath salts (lavendar, lemongrass, Ylang Ylang) loofah, candles & matches and ceramic candle oil burner rather adds to the wow factor.
thoughtful practical provisions like touchlight, mosquito spray, slippers, straw basket/bag, umbrella, ice bucket and wine glasses.
housekeeping does a fantastic job to keep everything tidy & clean and leaves (literally) blades of leave each day with a heartwarming message.
there is an outdoor shower and of course the pool and outdoor tub where the bath salts comes in useful. there is also an outdoor seating, relaxing area in a hut.
the breakfast spread and quality is delicious and yummy. we especially love the wun sen noodle soup and the fish & chicken porridge. had requested for egg benedict which was perfect! fresh fruits selection is good and so is the juices. there is fresh mango juice (rich and good) and freshly cut mango if you request for them.
Nam, our hostess is very polite and friendly. she is very observant and professional. she reminds our room number, looks out for us when we order hot noodles and brings the dish to our table for us.
the property is simply beautiful with lots of greeneries and flowers. villa pool near the beach is another good place to relax.
F&B in the villa are very expensive. try Crust at Anantara vacation club - their pizza is delicious. otherwise there is Turtle Village which has Coffee Club, Bill Bentley Pub, Swensens etc plus a Turtle mart too, which is like a supermarket! Alternatively, if you are game, try the local shops located at the beach near to the gym & Sea.Fire.Salt restaurant. we ordered Pad See Ew and garlic prawns with a bottle of Chang beer. Yummy! Didn't get tummyache :)
for shopping, there is Jim Thompson boutique, Surfers Paradise, Triumph and Esprit outlet along with other shops selling souvenirs.

We stayed at the Anantara Phuket Villas for 4 nights in late November. We arrives late evening in Phuket and i had pre-booked for a car to pick us up from the airport. Everything went smoothly and it was a short 20 min ride to the hotel. We were then immediately transferred to a buggy and taken to our Villa for check in (Lagoon Villa). The villa was lovely and spacious with a massive bathroom. I was in particular impressed with the amount of amenities available - great.
The private pool was lovely and it was nice to have a sala for some shade.

The main resort pool was stunning and i loved the "double sun beds" in the shallow water (see photos). The beach was also great.

Breakfast (at La Sala) was plentiful and varied and i in particulal liked the choice of juices and wheatgrass shots! Beautiful view of the lagoon and lots of fish and ducks that you can feed with bread (staff have baskets of bread for you to use).

We ate dinner at La Sala most evenings - GREAT thai food. Also had dinner at Sea Fire Salt which was nice (i recommend the lobster on the salt brick) but not as atmospheric as La Sala.
The Tree house is great for cocktails (don't miss happy hour from 6pm to 7pm i believe).

So, all positive really. A couple recommendations for improvement: In most Thai hotels i have stayed in you get an A4 Newsletter at turndown service with a list of activites for the next day, Happy hour times, special's in the spa or info about management's weekly drinks, weather forecast etc. This did not exist here. It would have been really helpful to have. I only found out in a review after our stay that for example there was a happy hour in the pool bar every day from 5pm to 6pm.

It was also slightly disappointing that there was a charge for the yoga classes - again - most other hotels i have stayed in there has been complimentary yoga and you can then pay to have individual classes if required.

Overall i think Anantara is a lovely hotel with stunning scenery and i would definately recommend it.

After an adventurous, extended stay in Asia, Anantara Phuket Villas was our final stop before our departure and I am so glad that we ended on such a high note. The 4 days we spent at this resort was completely what we needed - a special time to connect as a family in our awe-inspiring villa. Our family of 3 includes an 18-month old and this was a great fit for our needs. My little guy could play in the outdoor bathtub and still feel like part of the pool party - he had so much fun. We spent entire days in our villa and loved every moment of it. While the location is a bit isolated, spending isolated time in your villa seems to make perfect sense. I would suggest this resort for anyone looking to completely chill. Do not come her if you are looking to really experience authentic Thailand or nightlife, come her to do nothing...and love it. If you get a bit antsy, as I often do, you are close enough to a number of adventure destinations. Day trips are a great way to add some variety to lazy days in your villa. One aspect I think is worth sharing is the quality of service and leadership extended from the very present manager, Christian. While we had some service issues during our stay, Christian was eager to solve any challenge and go above and beyond. Even to the extent that he mailed my family our journal that we mistakenly left in the villa on our last day...and he covered the cost of shipping. His level of service is what we were hoping for, but had not experienced throughout much of Asia. Thank you Christian!

Room Tip: If you have a child under 2, the 1 bedroom should be totally ample. Our son slept in the VERY large...
