“Paradise except for the kids”
Reviewed August 2, 2011

We loved the Anantara, it is only 15 minutes from the airport and set in the most beautiful garden setting. We had a lovely villa overlooking the lagoon. The staff were all delightful, they always had a smile on their face and the breakfast offered a good choice of food.

My only criticism was the number of small toddler aged children. This place is a death trap for children with the lagoon and a pool literally outside your bedroom door. This resort is NOT designed for little children, it is a couples resort and that is how it should be sold. I found it most irritating that there were feral little children running around the breakfast room in the mornings and ruining the peace and tranquillity of the setting. As the children were in the restaurants in the evening we elected to dine elsewhere as we wanted peace and quiet not a kids club. The families would be much better off staying next door at the Marriott hotel where they are catered for and won’t get bored.

Other than that we loved the Anantara and would love to stay there again.

If you want luxury, attentive service and a pool villa to yourself as well as fanstastic resort facilities then this is the place for you, and all away from the crowds of Patong. It was so relaxing and we loved our 5 days at the Anantara and found it so hard to leave.

Our 5 year old daughter was treated like royalty and nothing was ever too much trouble, even adapting meals for her. One evening she was very tired and was falling alseep in her chair and without us even saying or noticing, the staff brought another couch chair over, layed her down, brought some pillows and a cover to make her comfy while we could continue to eat our meal, now thats service!!!! Every morning at breakfast they also had stale bread ready for her so she can feed the ducks :)

The villas are fantastic, very private and the pool is of a generous size. The main pool was very spacious and never crowded, lovely cocktails from the bar staff too.

There is only 2 points for further improvement:

(1) not all staff knew about what tours were available etc, we got differing info when asking about going to James Bond Island, so this was a bit confusing.

(2) the Day spa is wonderful but a bit pricey, they did run a special when we were there, buy 1 treatment and get 1 free which was great, maybe some of the prices need to be re evaluated.

We took a 1/2 day trip to Patong and it was ok to see but i sure was glad we picked the Anantara for our 1st stay in Phuket.

Absolutely blown away by how beautiful and aesthetic the resort is.. The in villa pools don't hurt 1 bit either.. Beautiful beach front although the sea is rough. Makes for great walks and photographs. Absolutely idyllic! Lovely service.
A couple of grouses. Found a crisp cockroach (probably been dead for a while) under the cushions in our day bed, a day into our stay and called housekeeping to take care of it when they cleaned the room. Came back checked the cushions etc and it was clean. Later in the day something crunchy came underfoot. It was the dead cockroach.
Also got bitten at night on the 2nd night stay. The bed/pillows had red ants crawling, but we didn't realize until the next morning waking up with welts.
This stay would have been PERFECT except for the two situations.

Room Tip: it doesn't really matter if you get the garden villa or the lagoon villa, they're all the sa...

My husband and I stayed in the hotel with another couple and we had a great time. The rooms are beautiful, each one with a swiming pool and outside jacuzzi, the restaurant was great, the service warm and impecable and overall we had a great experience. The resort has a bar on top of the restaurant that was lovely, a great place to have a drink at night.
I fully recommend the hotel if you want to a quitet and romantic time in Phuket not if you want to be in the middle of the action because it is far away from the town.

We stayed at the Anantara in Phuket for a 6-day family vacation (me, husband and 14 month old child). We had a hard time finding a nice, relaxing, "higher end" resort that welcomes children. This was a good compromise between something my husband and I would have stayed at before we had a baby vs. the crazy circus at the JW Marriott (next door). We had also previously stayed at the Anantara in Hua Hin and had a good experience there.

Pros:
- The villas are spacious and I believe all of the villas have pools. Our pool (we were in a Laguna Pool Villa) was certainly a decent size. You couldn't do laps but it wasn't a glorified bath tub either.
- The beach is very pretty with reasonably clean sand. However, it is a public beach, so don't expect there to be loung chairs and waiters if you want to sit on the beach. Also, while we were there, the waves seemed quite rough and were too strong for a small child to be playing in the water. There is also a small man-made beach by the pool that is good for children (umbrellas for shade) and really great lounge couches for drinks at sunset.
- Nice communal pool with a great view of the beach. No fighting over lounge chairs by the pool here! I suspect because all the villas have their own pools, the main pool was never very crowded. There is an area where the lounge chairs are "in the pool" (shallow water), which also made for a great play area for a baby. It was really nice to get drinks by the pool at sunset as well.
- The hotel is reasonably child friendly. They have high chairs, cribs and a children's menu. They were also able to accomodate other child-friendly fare off the menu. There is also a children's playroom, which is clean (and air-conditioned) but it's really geared torward older children (pre-teens and teenagers). There were some toys and legos though. There communal pool also has a shallow end that is good for children.

Cons:
- Service left much to be desired. We were there during the off-season, so I'm not sure if the hotel was just not fully staffed but service was consistently slow and often times apathetic. We asked for a buggy to pick us up from the hotel restaurant to our villa one night and it took 20 minutes (and 3 phone calls) for the buggy to arrive. Room service took ~1 hour the 3 times we ordered it. When we went to the front desk to ask for recommendations on activities outside of the hotel that would be suitable for a family with an infant - the reponse was simply that there was nothing for us to do (this after a 20 minute wait to speak to someone).
- Food and drinks are just so-so. There are two main restaurants at the hotel. Sala (Thai/International) and Sea Fire Salt (Seafood/International). The food wasn't bad but just wasn't stellar. But it was reasonably priced. "Bartenders" seemed inexperienced (ie. not real bartenders but just people mixing drink recipes)
- The bathtub is outside and very deep so not ideal if you have children that need to be bathed and the sink was not deep enough to be used as a small tub.
- The hotel is not very stroller/wheelchair friendly. Stairs by the pool area and Sea Fire Salt restaurant
- Thte hotel is not in a central location

Tips:
- I think it's probably okay to just book the most basic pool villa. We were in a Lagoon Villa and it looked out onto the (man-made) lagoon but we ended up closing the doors looking out to the lagoon for privacy most of the time. The Sala Villas basically just have this extra sala on the lagoon you can sit on/in but I can't imagine anyone spending too much time there with the mosquitos
-Turtle Village, a shopping complex is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The souvenirs there are overpriced but there is a supermarket in the basement where you can buy drinks and snacks
- The JW Marriott is also next door (5-10 minute) walk and is a good alternative for restaurants (if you can stand the crowds there) when you get tired of the Anantara's two restaurant choices. Food there is also about 30% cheaper.
- We went over to the Trisara Hotel for dinner one night and the food and scenery there was absolutely terrific. Definitely worth the trek and $$$
- We booked the rooms through agoda.com for US$320 (for a 5-night stay), which seemed like good value. We also flew business class from HK to Phuket on Thai Airways and it was within a few hundred HK$ of the price as economy tickets on Dragonair/Cathay Pacific.

The warmth and care that this place gave touched us. We will certainly be returning to Anantara either here or in other places across the globe.

Let me start right from the beginning. Anantara sent us a very well thought our questionnaire. We were able to inform them of our vegetarian diarary needs through the questionnaire.

Upon arrival, we were met personally by Justin the GM of the place and he comforted us again that the staff would go out of their way to make sure that our dietary needs were met. Check-in did not feel like a check-in but more like we were personally being welcomed at a relative's place. Our hostess took us personally to our villa and explained all the features very patiently.

The villa was fabulous. I realized that we had been upgraded two notches. We were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary, and we realized that this was their way of making it extra special for us. The villa could be made as private as we wanted and at the same time you could open all the sliding doors to let a lot of nature come in. We spent a lot of time in the private pool and sala area which is something very unique to Anantara. The staff paid special attention to the room needs as they serviced it and I enjoyed the evening turn down service as well.

The beach adjacent to the property was really secluded and nice. Two other hotels share that stretch of beach with Anantara but the length of the moon-shaped bay way long enough to give you the secluded feeling. My wife and I had a long stroll and I even went for an hour-long barefoot jog on the beach the next morning. For the turquoise water white sand experience, you'll need to go to one of the islands off Phuket though.

We had drinks at the tree house which was a very good experience. Sitting just a breath away from a banyan-tree top we were able to enoy the tropical night sounds and look at the oil lamps below which gave the whole resort a surreal aoura. They light all the oil lamps in te resort every evening.

We ate dinner once at La Sala when they had cooked us an excellent Thai traditional fare. We also had breakfast every day here which was simply out of the world in both choice and quality of food and fruits.

We alo had traditional Thai massages at the spa which was very well done I must say.they took pains to find out our expectations and needs and cater to them.

They made us feel very special on our anniversary. Not only did they offer us free drinks at the pool bar ( which was a sublime experience in itself: sipping our cocktails on an outdoor loung as we watched the sun dive into the sea), but they also had a delicious cake delivered to our room that evening.

In summary, it was an experience of just 3 days but will remain in our memories for several years. Both the staff and the premises made us feel very special. Just wish I had discovered them sooner.

Our welcome letter from the General Manager said “Welcome to Paradise” and it was very hard to disagree!
This all villa resort is a short ride from Phuket Airport and provides a high level of peace, seclusion and tranquillity. Service is exemplary and cannot be faulted; the staff remembered our names, brought favourite breakfast items unprompted and could not do enough to make our stay memorable in every way.
The luxury of having our own pool and the privacy it provided made for a unique stay and it was often difficult to leave the villa – why would you want to? The main pool must not be overlooked though, well designed and appointed, it was never busy and overlooks the ocean. Drinking water and fresh fruit was a nice touch there too.
The villa has a door opening directly from the bedroom to the private pool and another from the bathroom opening to the bathtub which is situated IN the pool itself. There is an outside rain shower too and the indoor one is powerful and good. Tea, coffee and cookies are provided and replenished daily.
A (very) minor caveat; the television could have been larger (for the size of the room) and was slightly awkwardly placed. The channels were often “frozen” too but the library has a good choice of DVDs so this was not too much of a problem. The i-pod docking station was great.
I was slightly concerned about insects but fears proved to be completely unfounded; the bi-weekly “fogging” probably helps.
The restaurants are a short and beautiful walk (or buggy ride) from the villas through extremely well maintained gardens – the profusion of staff tending to this was remarkable.
Breakfast is abundant with a good choice of fruit, cereal, bread, pastries, Thai and Western dishes with a great choice of hot specials too which were all tried with great success!
Dinner is served at either of the two restaurants – and provides very high quality and inventive dishes (the hot salt brick is a must-do). Turtle Village is next door to the main entrance of the resort and has a couple of other well-priced eating options.
The villas might not be for everyone, being quite remote and if you want nightlife and bustle, then look elsewhere but Anantara Villas is highly recommended for total relaxation and yes, paradise!
