This is a perfect resort for families with young children and older folks. OR large groups of friends on holiday.
The apartments are fully-equipped service apartments, even better than my own kitchen!. Layout is clean, lots of space for children to move around, private space for adults to chill and comfortable conditions. The only contention is the flooring is tiled, so tends to be quite cool or even cold, depending on the air conditioning.
The two bedrooms - main and guest bedrooms are very comfortably sized. A cot can go into the main bedroom. A make-shift bed for a 4 year old can even be placed in between the 2 super single beds in the guest bedroom. The bathrooms r huge. Main bedroom's bathroom comes with a jacuzzi tub. So makes for alternative water play for babies if the pool is too cold. The swimming pool is great but watch for sharp edged tiles they use around the jacuzzi planters benches. The resort makes for a nice cosy family get-away. 2 minutes walk from Turtle Village, a small quaint place with eateries and a minimart for your home-cooked meals and even a pub with pool and shuffle board. Very nice experience. The beach is shared with JW Marriott so a buggy ride is required (just 4 mins) to the beach area. Quiet, unlike the buzz in Patong so its nice. There is also a massage hut before you reach the beach. Nice cool breeze whilst you get your massages. Very positive setting. The gym on the resort compound and kids' club facilities are just great. With daily activities as well.

The only issue is transportation out of the resort area. As it is quite far north, any activities southwards have to be planned carefully. Roads in phuket are great, just that travelling time is long. So plan for day out so as not to waste too much money and time going in and out of the resort. The hotel transportation service is quite good. The hotel is also only about 20 minutes away from the airport unlike those in Patong area. So near enough and no traffic to battle with when going in and out of the airport.

So wait no more. Check it out.

My family stayed at Marriott Vacation Club (MVC) for 5 days in Nov/Dec 2009.
Pros:
1. The 2 bedroom apartment is well maintained, with a convenient kitchen. You can buy groceries from Turtle Mart (in Turtle Village next door) but the range is limited and more than double the prices in Carrefour or Tesco (which are an hour away in town). Best to bring your own supplies. Detergent is provided for you to wash your dishes, but if you leave it in the sink, the cleaning staff will wash up for you when they come around.
2. The rooms are spacious and the beds firm but not hard. Lots of pillows.
3. Each apartment comes with washer and dryer, even detergent. Very convenient.
4. The gym is clean and equipment new and well maintained.
5. Buggies are easy to hail and will bring you to JW Marriott is in jiffy.
6. Staff are generally pleasant and friendly at MVC.
7. There's a diving instructor who gives tips on diving and you can take a "dive trip" with tank and fins around the pool for the experience. FOC.
8. Zorb ball on water everyday 12 - 2pm. 300 baht for 1 trip, as long as you can stay in the ball. Very popular with the kids.
9. Free ice cold water at poolside anytime, and popcicles from 12-3pm.

Cons:
1. Takes you at least an hour to get to Phuket Town. There's really nothing around MVC but wasteland and the JW and the Anatara Resort which sits between MVC and the beach. The beach itself is not very useable. The sand is course and the gradient is so steep you have to walk sideways. We didn't try the waters.
2. Contrary to some comments that you can use the facilities at JW, we found out in a most unpleasant way that you can't. One of the poolside staff came running after us as we were quietly settling into a set of chairs and in a most unfriendly manner told us that we were not to be there. He waved and poked at an information card at us and said that this information is in all the rooms at MVC. We told it wasn't and he gave us the accusing look. His tone, his expressions, his body language screamed hostility. We were so cheezed off that we left immediately. Up till then, we had a nice vacation and had formed a good impression of the resort until this most unpleasant incident on our last day there. Marriott really should train their staff better. You can be firm but polite if that is the hotel's policy. But to be rude and accusing to the guests is totally unacceptable to me. No, I will not go back again.
3. While you are not allowed to use the facilities at JW, you are very welcomed to spend your money at the restaurants at JW. We ate once at the Deli. Food is expensive but the portions are large. For 4 main course sandwiches/burgers, 4 drinks and 1 starter, my family paid almost 2,700B. We pay half of that for a scrumptious seafood dinner at Karon beach!
4. I don't think all the sheets and cases are changed before the next guest checks in. I got up on the 3rd day after a sleepless night. I felt itchy and pins and needles the whole night. My husband also had the same sensations. In the morning, we pulled back the sheets and pillows and found lots of ants around the headboard and some under the sheets. I am absolutely certain no one from my party ate in bed, which meant that the ants were "leftovers" from the previous occupants. It took 1 trip to the front desk, 3 follow up telephone calls and more than 6 hours before the problem was resolved.

What you can do:
On the 2nd day, we went to the Taxi despatcher stand just beside Turtle Village and booked a 10-seater van. We got the van and driver from 10am - 10pm for 4,000B (plus 500B tip to the driver - on our own accord). The dispatcher originally wanted 4,500B (he gets a cut) but we bargained it down. Subsequently we booked Mr Samat directly ourselves on the 4th day from 2pm-9pm for 3,000B. Considering that we were travelling in 2 families of 8 people, the cost is reasonable. He was very patient and pleasant and brought us to a beachside restaurant for lunch, followed our directions to bring us to a seafood place in the back streets of Patong, drove us around Phuket island. We were able to hike up to a waterfall next to the gibbon reservation place, go for elephant rides, the bigger boys went to a live firing range, we also went to Carrefour to pick up groceries, and shopping at the Premier Outlets. Also spent about 2 hours at Karon beach for the kids to play on the sand and jump in the surf and watch the sunset.
On the second trip, Mr Samat brought us to buy local products and snacks, showed us Phuket Town, went to Promthep Cape for viewing, another 2 hours of play at Karon beach and then dinner.
Throughout the 2 days, Mr Samat would wait patiently for us and when we were ready to move off, we called him on his mobile and he would pick us up within 5 minutes. We did not have to worry about directions, parking or safety of the vehicle. His van is not one of those classy ones with high backed seats and seat belts, but it is clean and most importantly, it was his personality and patience that won us over. Each time we stopped, he would quickly run out to help us open the door and even help the younger kids out. Mr Samat can be contacted at 66(0)81-7286317 or 66(0)87-4610758.
Note that he serves only MVC and not JW. Different taxi despatchers for different locations and the locals stick to this rule.

In conclusion, would I go back to Mai Khao? No, too far and inconvenient. Would I stay at Marriott? No, experience with the staff left me with a poor impression. BTW, this is my second unpleasant staff-related experience with Marriott, the first being a few years ago at Hua Hin, Thailand.

The kids club is not safe for parents leaving their children, my child also went off by himself luckily we were in our ground floor villa at time, he found his way back but what if us the adult take a tour or go to the beach! I would not recommend parents park their children in this resort kids club at all.

My family of two adults and two young kids stayed for one week at the Marriott Mai Khao Beach in July 2009 and I have to say that the place is just about perfect for a vacation away from everything.

The place is near nothing so its not a place to look for action and nightlife. This is a place for pure relaxation and spending time with friends or family.

The service here was really fantastic. From the moment we arrived we were provided with extra special TLC. Around the pool they serviced iced water and ice blocks, and regular removed and replaced towels.

The pool area was much better than expected. My only comment is that the tiles around the pool are slippery and not that well suited to really young children (my youngest is 20 months). To be honest, lagoon beach pools are the best at this age. However, in saying that, there were a number of shallow pools to choose from, plus a great playground, and a kids club that, while small, had some excellent activities. My four year old really loved it!

The apartments are some of the best I have every stayed in. They are huge, luxurious and have everything a family could possibly want. We had a 2-bedroom with huge beds, two bathrooms with bathtubs in each, 3 LCD TVs, a full set of dishes and cooking utensils of all kinds and a washer and dryer. (as detailed by others) It makes taking care of the kids so easy. The whole place is 5 star and the apartments are kept spotlessly clean by the cleaning ladies.

The food is expensive, and average compared to local offerings. I have a couple of recommendations. The Coffee Club downstairs in the complex is a good option for basic meals/lunches, and good takeaways (if you have young children and need to get them to bed early).

I would also suggest getting a taxi to Bang Tao beach to go to Lotus Restaurant on the beach. It is a 30 minute drive, but really is worth it to get some local good food.

Alternatively, agree with other reviews that you could bring groceries in a suitcase, or visit the supermarket at Bang Tao, or use the Turtle Supermart, a mini supermarket in the Turtle Village mini shopping centre next door to the Marriott Mai Khao Beach (about a 1 minute walk).

It also has the most amazing gym ever!!

I would definitely come back, and recommend it for a lovely holiday, albeit without a great deal of Thai culture!
