We booked the Mai Khao as a timeshare getaway not really knowing what to expect. The resort was totally beautiful and the room was very nice. The room was very comfortable and it was equiped with a washer and dryer which we really liked, especially with 3 kids. The Mai Khao is not on the beach which was disappointing but they have round the clock golf cart rides to the main resort which is by the beach. Also the walk is very pretty and not that far. We spent all of our time at the main resort using their facilities (I guess you aren't suppose to but no one ever questioned this). The main disappointment was the inability to go into the ocean because of the strong currents and the red flags were always up (it was monsoon season). The second disappointment was the cost of everything, the food was very expensive and not that great, to get anywhere you had to take a taxi and they took full advantage of the location and charged accordingly. I tried to call one of the independent tour guides mentioned on trip advisor to take us on a tour of the city but he was not allowed to come to this resort because of an agreement with the taxi company. On the positive side the staff was very friendly and accommodating, we rented bicycles and rode to the town and that was great fun. Overall the experience was good but expensive.

We stayed at Marriott Mai Khao on a special promotional deal. Value for money and the apartment was beautiful. They had a lovely terrace overlooking the beach and 2 large ensuite rooms with a fully equipped kitchen. We were 2 couples, so this was really a nice space to chill out and relax.

You can use all the facilities of the Main Marriott hotel a few metres away from the Beach Club, so that was nice too.

The only problem is that Mai Khao Beach is a more sedate and quiet kind of beach , so its really not recommended if you're looking for a little more action than sunning yourself ont he beach. Many island tour operators however arrange pick ups and drops asa part of their deal. But it Just felt too far away from the action! Not a stop for the adventurous!

The first thing worth noting that is not explained anywhere is that there are 3 "resorts" listed as Marriotts in Mai Khao.
JW Marriott Resort & Spa, this is the Hotel section at the core of the main resort. I.e. Hotel rooms
Marriott Beach Club (aka Vacation Club), this is still on the main site but is for villa accommodation, perfect for families. You could fit 2 adults and 2 kids in very comfortably... they say 6 adults but there would be a lack of privacy to be honest!
Marriott Mai Khao Beach, this is a sattelite resort, that's about 300m away from the main resort. It's Vacation club still so all villas and you can use SOME of the facilities of the main resort.
If you stay at the Mai Khao then you have one and a half restaurants at your disposal, the food is very good quality. There's a lovely pool with a tiny kids area (good for infants). There's a kids club which is one little room, very poor show compared to the rest of the facilities.
Rooms are great, clean and well stocked. Bathroom is magnificent. (the wife was happy!)
The downside.... you CAN'T (or shouldn't) use the pools at the main resort, nor the bigger kids club at the main resort. This is a real shame as they are LEAGUES better.
You CAN use the restaurants at the main resort which are all excellent. Especially the deli which is a great idea. You can also use the beach which is only accessible from the main resort. Golf buggies go 24hrs to ferry you to and fro.
Location only gets 3 stars because although it was a convenient 15 mins from the airport, when it rained for 4 days it was a minimum of 45 minutes to get to any civilisation outside of Mai Khao to do anything. Can be a bit tedious.
If I went back I'd stay at the villas on the main site (Marriot Beach Club) the place has a lot going for it, it's beautiful and well thought out... it's just a shame that they want the Mai Khao to be a seperate entity and hence stop you cross-utilising some of the facilities.
The missus said the spa was great too. Room service menu was a little limited after a while.

If your looking for isolation and seclusion then this is the place for you. The resort itself is 5 star. Great service, nice facilities, awesome rooms, great pool. However, it is not located on the beach and is about 30 miles from the Patong Beach (shopping, nightlife). You can use the beach at nearby Marriott Beach Club as they will take you there by golf cart when you wish (you can wait up to 15 minutes for one though).
Also, they were unable to tell us tide conditions at the desk so hauled all our stuff to the beach to find out there was no swimming because of the tide undertow. If you want to explore the island you'll need a car as there is nothing around here for restaurants/shopping/etc. They did just open an english pub recently nearby at 'turtle village" and spent a couple of fun nights there as the resort doesn't have a bar.

Was at vacation club with hubby and 3 children in mid-March for a total stay of 3 nites. Gave service a double thumbs-up, cleanliness of villa full marks! Had been to Phuket 5 times over the last few years, and this is the most satisfactory thus far! My standard of cleanliness, hygiene and service is demanding as I am from the Service industry in Singapore. I salute the warm hospitality received throughout our stay at the club. My family is very happy with the club and my children would love to return again!

Just 1 thing to note - be prepared to self drive as it can be a distance from town, the club is located north of phuket, 15 min drive from airport and a wee 2 mins drive to checkpoint.

My family including children aged 11 months, 3 years old as well as my husband's parents spent 6 days at the Mai Khao apartments which are beautiful and exceptionally well designed.
We had stayed at the JW Marriot before but wanted more space and flexibility and the apartments gave us just that.
golf buggies take 5 mins or less to get you to the JW Marriot with all its facilities and restaurants as well as access to the beach and we had bags of space and the flexibility we wanted in the apartment.
booked on the Marriott website - be helpful to learn about some good deals as it wasnt cheap over Christmas!

Travelled with missus, in-laws and 3 kids in he middle of November. The resort is spanking new and there is some minimal renovation still going on in the reception area. The room itself (2-bedroom villa) was very nice with lots of amenities and 3-plasma screen TVs! Pool is nice and new but relatively small and a bit sterile. Limited dining options, but the Zest restaurant serves decent Thai fare and is about Singapore prices for the same level of food and ambience. Kids club is a smallish room, gym was nicely equipped.

We ended up spending a good deal of time at the main resort instead. Nicer pool, more activity and larger kids club.

Overall pleasant for what it was. If you want to stay here, really need to plan on getting out a bit either with a rental car or hired driver, can get boring beyond a few days.
