Travelled with missus, in-laws and 3 kids in he middle of November. The resort is spanking new and there is some minimal renovation still going on in the reception area. The room itself (2-bedroom villa) was very nice with lots of amenities and 3-plasma screen TVs! Pool is nice and new but relatively small and a bit sterile. Limited dining options, but the Zest restaurant serves decent Thai fare and is about Singapore prices for the same level of food and ambience. Kids club is a smallish room, gym was nicely equipped.

We ended up spending a good deal of time at the main resort instead. Nicer pool, more activity and larger kids club.

Overall pleasant for what it was. If you want to stay here, really need to plan on getting out a bit either with a rental car or hired driver, can get boring beyond a few days.

I purchased a week of stay at the brand new Mai Khao resort(Oct 18-25) through Interval Internation for $1100 USD; it was worth every penny. Upon arrival we were greeted with cold towels and fresh watermelon shakes, the staff at the resort then escorted us to the two bedroom unit. I was impressed by the spaciousness of the unit, and was told that the resort was recently opened back in April(barely 6 months old). The unit does not equip with a dish washer, however, the maids does practically everything for you (including the dishes!) The pool is maintain in a daily basis, the staff by the pool would set up the chairs for you without specific request, then he would place thecold towels and water at your stand. We had lunch twice at the Zest restaurant; the food was good yet expensive for Phuket. As other reviewers had mentioned the cab ride to Phuket town was expensive (1400 Baht=$43.75 USD), but the driver would wait for you (3 hrs) while you were shopping or getting a foot massage. We were told by the staff the construction near the entrance (a shopping mini mall and food market) should be completed by early or mid 2009. We did take the golf cart to visit the JW Marriott and its beach; the resort is gorgeous and the beach is not crowd at all. **Yes, we saw the baby elephant at the beach** We also went to the SPA at the JW Marriott; it is way overpriced; yes, the decor and the rooms were charming, but you could get a good Thai massage or facial for half or 1/3 of price at Phuket town. Overall we had a great time at this resort, the service is top notch. If you are looking for pool scene or a party atmosphere then this resort is not for you (go to Patong beach)

A magnificient resort, brand new and beautifully fitted out. The resort was wonderful. However, it was also in an isolated location. Despite having fully equipped kitchens there is no where to buy supplies unless you bring everything with or rent a car or take an exhorbitantly priced taxi. There is another Marriott nearby and you can get there by golf cart but between them the restaurants at both resorts were very, very expensive and offered mostly the same menu of overpriced food. Often the food wasn't even that good. They are building a mini-mall but it will be part of the hotel and the shops will likely be very expensive. I would stay here again but only if I rented a car or made sure that I brought a suitcase of supplies otherwise you are talking about food bills of around $200 per day above the hotel price and this for the basic and not very good food. There are more expensive restaurants with meals that work out at about $50 per head including soft drinks. The gym is fantastic and views are great but the beach is a bit far away. At the moment you can get to the beach by taking a free golf buggy to the other Marriott. Frankly, I enjoyed every second of it for the first three days and then was totally bored.

A friend of ours heard that we were interested in going to Phuket and offered to book us Marriott Phuket Beach Club through his MVCI membership. However it was full and he booked us into Mai Khao instead.. there was only 1 review on the resort at that point of time so it was not without reservations that we set off to Phuket with 2 little ones and my parents.

Upon checking in, we were pleasantly surprised by the newness and size of the 2 bedroom villas. Rooms were well-sized, and wow, the master bathroom was jaw-droppingly huge. Really 5* accomodation. Kitchen is well kitted out with brand new stuff, including a rice cooker, toaster and everything you could need to cook a meal.

The only downside of the hotel is that because of the Anantara resort being built, there is no direct access to the beach. You will have to catch the buggy from reception to JW Marriott (the main resort) to go to Mai Khao beach.. but that is a minor quibble.

Restaurant - Zest - fantastic service but as with all of the Marriott restaurants, prices are on the high side but to be expected in a 5* hotel.

All in all, I would return again because I loved the room, I loved the service and the kids loved the pool and the kiddy room.

If you are particular about where you SLEEP... look no further than this wonderful King sized bed and fantastic pillows.....I want that bed/pillows at home... The whole unit was tastefully furnished with a spacious layout which in my opinion was far superior to the slightly shabby looking units at the Marriots phuket beach club down the road. The check in was quick and pleasant however I would reccommend that you allow plenty of time for check out for them to collate your bill ( we did this the night before an early morning departure after I heard some other guests worrying about missing their flights as it was taking too long for them to settle their bill)

The staff were all very friendly, happy and ready to please. We had a lovely maid (daily cleaning) 'Wipa' who left the most amazing towel animals on our bed each day. After reading all reviews on this site about the JW Marriotts down the road I was anxious to see it but even though their pools were bigger, they did not look as clean as Mai Khao and we were happy to spend our days in our pool even though it was quieter as I guess most people went over to the JW for swimming (even though this is not really allowed).

I would recommend hiring a car as the whole resort is out on a limb but if you want somewhere relaxing, beautiful and comfortable , you will not be disappointed with the mai khao. They have a full schedule of kids and adult activities, (free DVD & book rental) but as the resort is so new , be sure to book ahead or the class will not take place as i found to my disappointment one 8am stretch class. DO try the adult bike ride, it was fun and gave us a good view of our immediate vicinity. The cakes at the bakery were lovely, loved all the food we had especially the 24hr room service which was laid out upon delivery like I'v never seen before..real Thai hospitality....!! Prices were not over the top compared to Hong Kong rates, thought everything was good value for money, although the 'Siam cafe' at JW's did have more of a choice/larger menu.

There is still some noise from the construction across the road but the apts are so well sound proofed that there is absolutely no disturbance when inside the apt even during a heavy thunder storm..!! My one and only complaint would be the distance of the resort from Phuket town but we do plan to go again in the near future and no doubt would choose Mai Khao beach for its sheer luxury rather than location.

Well, I loved my stay at this resort for a short trip of 3 days. However, I must admit that a large part of the pleasurable experience definitely comes from the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, which is a couple of minute drive from Mai Khao Beach Resort.

To be fair, the first impression of Mai Khao Beach Resort of course came from the check-in service and the room. The check-in service? Most staff were nice and there was just not too many to complain, except for the slightly low efficiency. Then, the room, I simply at least liked it a lot, if not loved. It was spacious, nicely furnished and well equipped with what you need in a vacation stay in a resort. I was quite sure that rooms in this newer JW resort would be nicer than its neighbour.

Before I stayed in this resort, I keep checking the room facilities in the resort homepage and the forum here. I can now assure everyone of you that free-of-charge high speed interet service is avaiable in the room and the computer provides the LAN cable as well (whether or not the public area has wi-fi? sorry, I am not sure then). Besides, the CD player described in the resort homepage is in fact a DVD player. So bad I was misled by the resort homepage and took away all my intended DVD the last minute.

However, things outside the room, well, they are not bad, like the pool and the sun-bathing area. However, to me, they just could not keep me there. Free drives (on golf cars) to and fro this resort and the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa is provided (according to staff, 24 hours, but I am sure you would not travel between the resorts in midnites.) The food, facilities, and pool are all better on that side. Besides, the longest beach on Phuket, the Mai Khoa Beach is just outside the Resort. For more details of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, readers could refer to its comments in TripAdvisor.

Some also concerned about the noise from the new resort construction site nearby. Yes, there are some noise, but it seemed to affect only villa building 1. I stayed at building 2 and noise has not been even a slight problem.

All in all, it's a bit hard to rate my stay in Mai Khao Beach solely on its own "performance" as it would be pointless and unrealistic to isolate oneself in the Mai Khao Beach Resort. Therefore, the 4 star rating referred to my collective experience while staying in the MAi Khao Beach, but having almost all meals and some happy hour and post-dinner drinks in the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. If one really insist me to rate Mai Khao Beach alone, fine, 2.5 to 3 stars.
