Location: Isolated part of Phuket, not on beach front
Hotel: Medium size for a resort, 3-4 buildings of 5 floors each
Room: Big, at least 1,500 sq ft + big balcony
Positives: Rooms are great for families
Negatives: Location, noise
Ranking at time of writing: #7 of 9 in Mai Khao

At the outset, let's be clear why we went, we're a couple in 30s living in S'pore and were offered a promotion for a 3 night stay. Next - this place isn't for couples, unless all you want to do is relax on a deck chair by the pool with 100s of children running around. The hotel is located in a cluster next to JWM, Anantara, Renaissance & Sala. Some of the facilities are shared.

I must say, the service (by the staff attending to you) was great but I did find this hotel a bit rigid in its stance. We managed to get a late check-out at noon (even though we had requested for as late as possible as our flight was at 7pm) even though the hotel appeared half full at best, funnily, our friends only managed to extend their check-out by 1 hour to 11am. Also, there was an employee of a car rental agency (not the same one employed by Marriott) near the lobby who was offering a car for a rate lower than what the agency of choice did, but soon one staff cautioned the car rental employee in Thai who then soon backed off and said he didn't have any more cars, what a shame!

Now coming to the resort, it wasn't the biggest that I've been too, especially given the abundance of land in this part of the island. This resort is part of the vacation club (time sharing) that Marriott sells. There were quite a few people who were there on packages similar to ours for 'trying' the resort out in the hopes of converting them into members. The resort has a pool which is average in size but not well constructed, no pool bar though. There are tennis courts which I believe are shared with a neighbouring property. There are several other activities on a daily basis, most targetted towards children. Unfortunately there's no beach access and one has to either walk 15-20 mins (or take a buggy) to JW Marriott through which one can access the beach. Guests can't make use of any other facilities of JWM except for restaurants and spas (and I think rightly so). Also, the 2 restaurants at Marriott Mai Khao beach were average in their offerings and the restaurants & bar at JWM seemed a lot better (and pricier). The breakfas spread was similar to what most other hotels would serve but a bit on the pricier side.

Now the rooms - we had a 2 bedroom apartment which was big, our bedroom had a king size bed, a small wardrobe, a chair + a big balcony with table & chairs. The bathroom was big with a tub and separate shower area, had 2 basins. The hall was big with a fully equipped kitchenette, a dining table, sofa (which converts into a bed) and a TV. The guest bedroom had 2 double beds and an attached bathroom. The apartment comes with a dryer/washing machine. We were woken on 1st day by some children playing in their pool villa underneath even though our windows were shut.

Would I stay there again? Probably not, its too far from where the action is, the property isn't the best, its very noisy, food options are limited unless you want to pay up at Marriott. The staff was courteous but I didn't like the Marriott policies.

Room Tip: If you can, get a pool villa, our room #4435 didn't have any view to write home about.

The approach to the hotel is just off the main road so you'll have arrived before you know it.

We stayed in one of the rooms close to the reception area. There were two bedrooms and the rooms were very spacious at 100sq/m. Modern and clean ... but so 'modern' it felt a little to clinical and plain.

The Facility is well kept and staff are friendly. They drove us around in the electric buggies if the shuttle bus was not going to arrive soon.

This certainly feels like a place made for families. We visited the Anantara next door for a drink at their bar and would certainly recommend there for an extra special feel for couples. Breakfast was good - certainly compared to the Hilton vacation club place we visited on Hawaii Island - with a mix of Western and Thai food and fresh bread. Turtle village shopping center next door is only one minute away but the prices seemed very expensive.

Overall, would recommend this as a nice place for families.

Where have vacation clubs been all my life? It really is such a easy vacation option, especially if you're hoping for some real R&R and travelling with kids.

This was my first time travelling with my 14-month-old boy, and he enjoyed the pool and toys in the Kids' Club. I can imagine that he would go crazy if he were older, with all the available sports equipment, video games etc.

It was also great having such a big apartment. My husband and baby and I shared the mega master room with its super king sized bed, while my mom had the other room with two super twin beds. AND there were a spacious hall with a dining area that seats 5-6 and a fully equipped kitchen. Fantastic!

The downside is perhaps that Mai Khao is quite far from the other beaches. We weren't too keen on Patong after feedback on how sleazy it was, but we took a nice jaunt in our rental car to Surin Beach. It was about a half-hr drive and had great seafood.

Food-wise, the Beach Club itself had decent a decent café and restaurant, though to mix it up, head out to Turtle Village (literally a stone's throw away), Kin Dee Thai restaurant or even the food carts just outside the resort for more food options.

Good value for money, thanks of our Marriot Vacation Club membership, and a great holiday overall.

Our 4 night stay here was a complimentary referral and we attended the obligatory time sales pitch at the Marriott Hotel 10 minutes away....the hotel is a much better bet and several couples staying at Mai Khao escaped over to their pool mainly to escape the noise here as this is a family resort for couples with kids. The Marriott also sits on the beach whereas the Mai Khao Beach does not! Beach is nice to walk along though there was no chance for a dip as red flags were flying!
Apartments are pretty good, ours was 2 bedroomed and with its own kitchen and laundry room with washer & drier. Kitchen was well stocked, coffe maker, fried etc. It did feel damp however & we switched off the air con and opened the doors to try and remedy....there are ceiling fans in the bedrooms but none in the lounge / dining area. Bedrooms and Lounge have flat screen tv plus DVD player and you get free Wi Fi access.
We were on first floor with a good size closed balcony, table and chairs....appts on ground floor had a dip pool which would have been nice!
Grounds are pleasant enough but no view to speak of....there is also a huge electricity pylon sitting next to the entrance to reception which does nothing for improving the vista!
Cafe on site very good, breakfast served in Zest is an ok buffet but expensive compared to other hotels I stay in. Turtle Village lies next to the property and offers alternative dining choices and a supermarket. There is a shuttle to the Marriott Hotel.
Staff are friendly and are more than helpful although at the end of the day you are just another face in the vacation club crowd....
My rating overall would be above average falling short of very good....

The vacation club is a wonderful place to chill. It is a beautiful resort that shares facilities with the nearby JW Marriott. We absolutely loved the villa with our own plunge pool. Our kids loved the space and comfort of the home away from home. We were greeted and well taken care of upon arrival. Maybe it was also because we are Marriott vacation club members. :) there was much effort to also make us really feel welcomed as they even decorated the towels by making it into shapes of animals or flowers. The games and daily activities were good and well thought of. Food was affordable and nice. Good variety with JW Marriott around and the turtle village too having shops and a supermarket. Would go back more often since we have club points. Only downside is that the resort is far north of Phuket. Away from the busy south and many activities. It can be seen as a positive too as it is near the airport and you won't get caught in the jams down south as much.
