“Family Holiday”

Recently stayed at this property as part of a group of 4 adults and a young child. Our apartment was good sized with 2 double bedrooms kitchen, dining and seating area. The master bedroom was big as was the bathroom, however the second bedroom was a little small. perhaps a future design could lose a little bit from the master and add to the second bedroom!
The room was well provided with eating utensils and there was a washing machine and dryer in a hall cupboard. The beach is about 550 yards away but transport is provided for those with walking problems. The pool is a fair size with plenty of loungers. We found the staff with whom we came in contact both competent and friendly. There is a club for children which was well run. The property is a bit isolated but a new mini mall has opened next door

Room Tip: A view over the pool is best and noise is no problem

We have been home owners at Marriott Mai Khao resort for the past 4 years and visit the resort atleast twice every year. The key reasons for buying this time share were:

- Phuket is just 1.5 hours flight from Singapore with several budget airlines plying the route. Not much planning is required to book flights and jump on a plane and get here, usually at very affordable prices.
- being a family of 4 with two teenage boys, we love the spacious villas as we can easily spend over a week without getting in each other's way.
- all villas are extremely well furnished and have everything that would be expected from a 5 star perspective.
- the time share has it's advantages as there are no blackout days and quite easy to get bookings here.
Additional bonus is that owners can also use other Marriott properties, though it is a bit of rocket science if one wants to maximize the points system. We just call, book and fly irrespective of seasons and based on availability of the property.

The Resort

- resort is on the northern tip of Phuket, which means it is almost one hour drive away from the heart of Phuket I.e. Patong beach. It works for people like us who want to stay from overcrowded beaches, backpacker hostels and cheap mock-up shopping.
- The Resort does not have a beach but is 7 min buggy ride away from the secluded Mai Khao Beach.
- Mariott has 3 properties in a cluster, Mai Khao Beach Resort, JW Marriott Hotel and Phuket Beach Resort. The JW has. Beach frontage and either property guests have access to the private beach.
- We have seen the resort develop in the past 4 years and the are several activities to keep guests of all ages entertaines I.e. swimming, basketball, cycling, tennis, chess, archery and of course video games consoles.
- restaurant food at Mai Khao is average and slightly over priced. Our usual preference is to visit neighborhood local Thai eateries: Kin Dee (5-7 mins driving distance) and Thanoon (10-12 min driving distance). Food is cheap, almost 50-60 % cheaper than the resort and authentic Thai in very rustic setting. Major credit cards are accepted.
- for breakfast, best option is Coffee Club which is 2 mins walking distance from the resort at the Turtle Village centre.
- the resident spa at JW, Mandara spa is truly world class and a must for spa lovers.

Staff is extremely courteous, friendly and professional. We have never had any issues with the service standards.

In summary, Marriott time share makes practical sense to people who those who want a nice resort getaway that could be called home away from home.

Our kids can't wait to come to Mai Khao and as a family we truly enjoy the experience every time we get here.

Room Tip: Block 2 has the best pool views.

I am not staying here again. For a 5 star hotel In Mai Khao Beach things can go horribly wrong and 5 star management can turn into 1 star management when they feel like it, I was subject to a catalogue of miss management and accounting errors, i was checked in by the hotels Room Division Manager called "Aya Hosokawa", everything was fine until i told her i was paying the deposit on a visa debit card, she rightly said if you don't spend the deposit you will have to wait for a credit on your card and therefore a cash deposit is a preferred option to those with visa debit cards. The card deposit she wanted was 10,000 Baht and i said i would spend that "easily" so please take it off my visa card, she disagreed and said she wanted 5000 Baht cash deposit, I said i don't have much local currency and she directed me to a cash machine which was a few minutes walk outside the hotel. She told me doing it this way I would not need to make another payment until i checked out a week later. That wasn't the case, during an evening entertaining seven guests to dinner I was asked to visit the reception to pay my bill, which i did and asked the duty manager to see me the following morning. She attended my villa "Nataya Songsang" who was very friendly and apologised for what had happened and that she assured me she would take care of all accounting issues. Unfortunately on checkout my card was charged 3 times by another member of staff and on arrival in Singapore i discovered it had been barred due to misuse by Marriott Mai Khao Beach staff. I had to empty my case to find another card and spent 40 minutes at a cost of 1.50 a minute getting my card re-instated. I then had difficulty getting the names of everyone i spoke to form the hotel. Because of the wonderful manner the Thai people have, I always hold back complaining where possible in Thailand, but the manager was not a local, she accepted she did not understand English that well and she does not seem to care at all over what happened, i feel categorised as one with another complaint being swept underneath the table (my bill was about 30,000 Baht). Not very good for the Marriott name. Have you had to visit a cash machine to check in a 5 star hotel against your wishes? Has the hotel made you settle your account half way through your stay? And has your credit card been charged by the hotel three times and barred in the process?

Room Tip: all rooms are good, but wherever you are is a long walk to the beach, you can use the JW Marriott fa...

We own a week at Mai Khao. The appartments are very nice, spacious and well equiped. It is only a short walk to the beach. The times we went to Mai Khao there was never a problem with getting a chair near the pool, I noticed that the JW next door was full and it was hard to get a bed there.
Only disadvantage is that the pool is relatively small, they should have a lap pool.
Good happy hour at the pool bar.
Restaurant Kin Dee is not far away but it is not of the same standard anymore as the first year it opened. It is still better than most but not super.
Weather was not very good, not a lot of sun.

We went during 2012 Chinese New Year with the family. We took 3 rooms of the 2 bedroom villa and we had a great time just enjoying each other's company. We took the Marriott Vacation Club package which included food vouchers which made it very worth while.

The rooms are very well equipped and comfortable. Our parents went golfing while we kids (not that young.. aged between 20-35) spent time by the pool, playing pool, table tennis and so forth.

Distance to Phuket like what everyone is saying is far but it does not bother us because we have been to Phuket numerous time. This trip was purely to rest and relax.

We spent our last few days in Thailand at this quiet resort. Check in was a breeze and our 2 bedroom suite was fantastic! Staff were always courteous and helpful. Although the secluded beach is a short walk it is easily accessible by golf cart or shuttle. We enjoyed all the amenities of all the hotels. If you want a more reasonable meal the small mall has everything you need. If you are looking for nightlife this is not the place to be. After staying in Patong for 7 days this was a nice reprieve from all the hustle and bustle of the busier tourist areas. Nothing to buy so get your souvenirs elsewhere. Gladly would return!

Our family of 5 (children 5, 7 and 9) enjoyed our second holiday in Phuket in October 2012 at the Mai Khao Beach Resort, bringing along grandma and grandpa. Our accommodations were a great holiday apartment with more than enough room for the 7 seven of us to relax and enjoy our space. The kitchen was a huge bonus (stocked with the essentials for cooking) and the room staff would clean the dishes each day... an added bonus. We loved the large patio with seating off of the apartment, the large master bedroom and bath, and the fact that we had a washer and dryer.

We were located immediately next to the entrance of Turtle Village, which was great. A wonderful ice cream shop, some great boutiques for shopping, a couple great restaurants, and a grocery store with international goods to meet most all of your needs.

The staff was amazing at the resort. We could not have asked for more. Very friendly and attentive, and great with the kids. The kids club was also the best I have ever found. We could feed the kids "kid food" at our room before heading out... leave the kids for the popcorn movie party at the kids club, and head off for an adult dinner while the kids had fun. No fee for the use of the club but for the occasional activity, and there are so many fun things for the kids to enjoy. Best of all, it is open late, so dinners out can be easily enjoyed!!!

We ate at all of the restaurants at the resort, several times. We also traveled to the JW to enjoy some of the great places to eat there... and all were wonderful. Very reasonably priced, I might add.

The concierge had a great collection of activities outside of the resort available for booking, and we had a great time on a few different excursions. Our favorites from this trip and the last... the Flying Hynaman Zip Lining, Siam Safari Jungle Trecking, Phi Phi Island Motor Boat Toar, and the June Bahtra Cruise. My husband also did the sunset bike tour through the resort... A MUST!!!!! Bring your camera!

The property only has the one main pool, but that seemed to be enough. It was never too crowded for our liking. Each day a trainer with a baby elephant strolls onto the pool deck. This was a huge highlight for my kids. They got to play, pet, feed, and even ride the baby elephant. We then followed her down to the beach to watch her swim in the waves.

The beach is available at a sort walk (maybe 5 minutes). The sand isn't the nicest... might even be itchy on the skin as we found after sitting in it. It is also a very steep sloped beach, which is a bit of a downside. We enjoyed time playing here, but in rough water, it isn't the safest place for smaller children. Therefor, we opted to spend most of our time in the pool.

The only two cons for us were the fact we had to walk a bit to get to the beach, and that there wasn't a nice buffet breakfast included in the package.... though, not to say you couldn't get a nice breakfast at the resort!

We loved it so much, we most definitely plan to visit again. And you will want to make a week of it, if not longer!
