We stayed at this resort from April 2 to 5 2012 at a two bedroom villa with a plunge pool. Each bedroom has a bathroom with tub; so my ten year old daughter was overjoyed as she was able to take a bath in each of the tubs, aside from having her own private pool. The villa has a living, dining, and kitchen area as the intention is for guests to feel at home. Being located at the northern part of the island, far from the more commercial and touristy area in the south, makes it all the more important if the guests do not want to travel far. A plus is the Turtle Village (mini) mall which is situated right beside as there are shops and two restaurants and a grocery at the basement; just in case you want some change in scenery. Over-all, the facility is five stars!

The major drawback is the check-in and check-out time. We arrived at the resort just before two in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the check-in time was 4pm so they asked us to wait as the villa had to be cleaned up. We decided instead to spend time at the Turtle Village mall and as we walked passed our villa, we noted that there were no longer occupants. Upon our return at 4pm, we passed by the villa again and noticed that there were no cleaners and that the cleaning had not yet started. When we checked with the front desk, they told us that the room would be available at 530pm. I could not understand this because the villas and rooms are regularly cleaned every day; so why was it taking so much time for them to make the room available considering that the required check-out time, on the other hand, is 10am? In fact, when we checked out three days later, a family of four were getting irritated as they had arrived in the morning; only to discover that their accommodation was still not available. Definitely needs improvement!

We stayed at the Marriott Vacation Club on a referral from friends who are timeshare owners here for 3 nights (offered complimentary). In summary, the 2-bedrooms villas are great for when travelling with kids/family, but the resort itself is 3-star at best.

Arrival : Marriott has an Arrivals Booth in the terminal, and we were warmly greeted there before being taken to the van for the transfer to the airport. Van had a good baby seat installed. The ride to the resort took about +/- 25 mins. Prior to arrival we had been confirmed an early check-in at 10am, however upon arrival they said the earliest they can do is 1pm. The official check in time is 4pm. Decided to head to Tesco/Lotus to stock up on supplies before checking-in.

Room : Very spacious and well equipped, however it's not really baby/toddler friendly. There are lots of sharp corners on furniture, massive mirror overlooking the dining table which could easily break with a toddler throwing anything towards it, floor very very slippery when wet etc. In-room baby amenities were thorough and included a sterilizer, cot, bathtub, and high-chair. Having the well-equipped kitchenette and laundry was very useful. Never sat outisde on the balcony due to too many mosquitoes.

Activities/Leisure : The pools are pretty basic and can get quite crowded. This is a family resort so don't expect to come down to the pool areas and expect peace and quiet. The kids club was very underwhelming, especially when compared to the JW Marriott facility next door. My kids really loved the fire show and the baby elephant 'Yaya' that comes to the pool area in the mornings.

"Turtle Tax" : You must know that everything that you pay for at the hotel, and at Turtle Village are at inflated prices - prices that would not be out of place at the Peninsula or Oriental in Bangkok - however the quality is certainly not there. At the Turtle Village supermarket, a 1L bottle of milk is 80baht vs. 45baht for the exact same bottle at Tesco. The taxi to get to Tesco is 1200baht round trip fixed (no regular taxis are allowed any where near Mai Khao beach by the taxi mafia that operates here), but i would imagine that if they were, the ride to Tesco (30mins) would cost about 250baht at most. If you are staying for more than 3-4 days, I would highly recommend getting over to Tesco/Lotus on your first day to stock up on groceries, drinks, supplies etc.

Food : Overall the food we had at the hotel via room service or in the restaurant was decent quality, but as explained above, very poor value for what you received. We tried the delivery option from Kin Dee Restaurant, and would definitely not recommend it - see my separate review. The room service menu was fairly limited, however, as the food was prepared in the JW Marriott kitchens, they were willing and able to cater to special requests.

Service : This is Thailand, so pretty much everyone is unfailingly welcoming and polite sans the Front Office Manager who was pretty rude over the phone when we tried to confirm the late check out on the day prior to our departure. Basically saying that since we had an early check in, he couldn't do a late check-out and he would send the bellman at 10am sharp to our room to collect out bags.

Overall : I liked the area, as it's quiet but i wouldn't stay here again. Either i would stay at the JW Marriott next door or at the Anantara resort which is next door, and was fantastic. Whilst walking through the resort to get to the beach, we stumbled upon the GM's evening cocktails, and even though we said that we weren't staying at their resort, they still invited us to have a glass of wine.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in Block 1. We had a room in Block 4 and was a distance away from the main building a...

We stayed in a 2 bedroom pool villa, which meant that we had our own 6m pool. The villa was well appointed and spacious. The bedrooms and bathrooms were spacious and the master bedroom was quite luxurious. Having our own pool was very handy (as we have 4 young kids) but it was over chlorinated.

The resort was well presented but getting a bit run down. There were two pools, one large one and a smaller one with a slide for the kids. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Probably our main gripe was the food. After a few meals, it all started tasting the same. Room service was a let down - do not try the burger - the worst we had ever come across.

Value for money, however, it was pretty good.

This is a nice place to stay but far away from most of the activities. Hotel itself is great with a friendly staff, clean and spacious rooms, etc. Pool is great with plenty of activities and a small shopping plaza near by to check out. The draw back is the distance from the main areas so you have to travel at least 50-60 min each trip off the grounds for activities such as scuba diving.

This resort has turned into a completely child oriented place. My husband and I first came to Mai Kao just after it was built. It was a great property. The apartments were luxurious and spacious. We have been back several times and with each time back we have noticed more and more activities for children and more and more the resort has become less peaceful for those of us without children. I didn't think it was a big problem until this last visit to the resort. Fortunately, we upgraded to a pool villa and were able to get some peace and quiet. When Mai Kao was first built it offered the ability for their guests to use the facilities such as the pool etc. at the JW Marriott, but this visit I've seen that the guests at Mai Kao Beach no longer have any access to the facilities at the JW unless it's to go to the restaurants. Although we have a time share here, I'm not sure that we will come back because it is no longer a peaceful vacation for my husband and I.

Room Tip: To have a more peaceful time, upgrade and get a villa with a pool.

We stayed at Phuket beach Club last year and for part of our return visit this year but also had a week at the Marriott Mai Khao Resort. This resort is a short walk from the other resort both near the Turtle beach (small) Shopping complex. The Mai Khao is more arranged around families. We were 2 couples and we stayed in a villa with it own pool which we upgraded to on arrival. This was a great idea and we enjoyed having the privacy of our own pool but did manage also to spend some time around the main pools. I would not compare the 2 resorts as I feel they service 2 different groups of guests. You can use a few of the facilities at Phuket beach but are discouraged from using the pools and gym as Mai Khao has their own although in my opinion not as good. You get room service in both but we found the Mai Khao was not quite at the same standard as Phuket Beach. The apartments were of a similar standard and both very nice and roomy.

Room Tip: If you can upgrade an apartment with a pool is the way to go.

The property offers a lot in terms of entertainment and activities for kids. That being said if you are a couple or honeymooner you're better off elsewhere.

The location is very far out and it costs a lot just to travel out to town, where all the action is. I paid 1400 baht to go to Patong beach via the hotel's shuttle bus. I don't mind paying but this ain't Japan or America. How can the transportation be so expensive. I constantly feel like I got ripped off by the transport options.

If you you envision yourself spending four full days out on pristine unspoilt beach then go ahead.

The F&B outlets are expensive and quality is only average. Now I am one to stump out several hundreds for good food but the meals taste so-so.

If you are a fan of Marriott, head to Marriott Courtyard where it's more exciting.
