“Nothing BUT the BEST”
Reviewed June 3, 2011

This property is one of the best i have visited so far. My family loved the place and would refuse to step out of the property. Rooms are lavish, service is amazing, the facilities are kingsize and and Marriots stand to their reputation- Nothing but the Best!!

If you have not visited this place..do so at next available opportunity. I do plan to visit Marriot Mai Khao Beach Resorts, Phuket as often as we can!!

The resort is absolutely beautiful.
The kids club is wonderful.
We had rainy weather so a little disappointed.
The Mandara Spa is breathtakingly beautiful.
Staff very helpful and exceptionally kind.

Let me say from the outset that the accommodation here is lovely. No arguement there. The villas are spacious and modern. Housekeeping makes your huge comfy beds every day and does your dishes for you. The fact that you have a kitchen and laundry in your villa was a godsend when travelling with a family. You are given 2-3 litres of bottled water free of charge in your room every day. The en suite bathroom is opulent.

Having said all of that we wouldn't choose to stay here again for the following reasons:

1. The adjoining JW Marriott and the Phuket Beach Club (which share grounds) are just as lovely accommodation but have far superior grounds and pools. It's like going "up a star."
2. Marriott Mai Khao is not on the beach. It is about a 10 minute walk to the beach - OK,
no big deal. The real issue is that you cannot SEE the beach when you are in the resort. You cannot even see a horizon. It's a bit like being inside a concrete box at times, albeit a nice concrete box, but made me feel claustrophobic.
3. Staff's English is poor. They are very nice and try hard, but if I am spending this sort of money, I'm sorry, but I want better English skills to be able to deal with glitches or problems. We found that on one or two occasions when we did have cause for minor
complaint, the member of staff we spoke to would smile and shrug their shoulders helplessly. Were they being rude? No. They just didn't have the language skills to cope with anything above, "can you refill my cocktail."
4. This has been said over and over, but it's a long way from anything. We didn't think this would bother us too much. We weren't too fussed about being near Patong, so thought it wouldn't matter. But being "out and about" type people we found a wander around the Mai Khao area didn't have much to offer. We would probably choose another location that had more in the way of surrounding restaurants and little shops next time.
5. This has also been said again and again - the resort restaurants are expensive. We stocked up on food at Tesco Lotus and cooked evening meals in our kitchen for several nights. We made our own breakfast every day. When you have to mutiply each meal by 4 persons, it will send you broke fairly quickly! The Turtle Village supermarket was also very pricey so we only used that at a pinch.
We visited Kin Dee restaurant one day for lunch and found it charming. We walked, as we didn't feel inclined to cough up the over inflated taxi fare the resort would charge. It was only about 2km and easily do-able. The restaurant drove us back to the hotel after our meal at no charge.
We also walked to KIn Dees sister restaurant, Uncle Lern's Thai Street Food which is even closer to the resort and had a great meal there too. By the way, when we asked the resort staff for directions to both of these restaurants they acted vague and shrugged. Perhaps they are instructed to keep tourist dollars on site. We found them by asking a local taxi driver.
One night the two of us went to the Siam Deli at the JW which was beautiful but costly. Two banana smoothies and 3 pastries cost AU$26.
6. We found it insulting that we could use the JW facilities that we were willing to pay for i.e. restaurants, but were forbidden to use their pools. C'mon guys! Either the resorts are separate or they're not. Although we didn't use the JW pools it would have been easy to do so undetected as someone else has noted already.

If you are a sit around a resort kind of person, perhaps you would enjoy this type of holiday. However I would be inclined to forego the Marriott Mai Khao in favour of the superior JW Marriott or The Phuket Beach Club if you decide Mai Khao is where you want to be.

Did a lot of research on tripadvisor before going to Marriot Mai Khao beach and a lot has already been said. But since we were travelling with our 2 gals aged 38 months and 15 months, this review is more for parents with young tots like us.

The Kids club located right next to the lobby was great. We rented kiddie DVDs like Lion King, Ratatouille, 101 Dalmatians, Open Season and you can pick thriller/action movies for the adults too. Only children above 4 years old could be left there alone, but there were many craft activities that you can enjoy with your kids eg. colouring, water colour painting, pencil box decoration, gift box decoration, umbrella painting, hair weaving. Only the umbrella painting is chargeable at 500++ Baht (SGD20+) but then you get to bring back the ornamental paper umbrella as souvenir.

We saw the kids pool with a water slide we didn't try it out cos we accidentally went to the adult pool which had a shallow end (5cm deep) with many tiny water 'sprouts' and my gals enjoyed that plus they had enough fun 'swimming' in the 2 bathtubs in the apartment.

We paid 1400 baht each for a half day safari tour to see the thai cooking demonstration, elephant and monkey shows, ox cart riding, elephant riding etc. The ride was 45mins - 1 hr and quite windy but the kids didn't seem to mind and took turns to nap on the mini bus. They were tired out by the time we returned at 2pm though.

We took the free shuttle bus to the beach that was at JW Marriott. The beach frankly was nothing much cos the sand was not powdery white like Patong beach, golden in colour and quite coarse. The beach drop off was steep too. I didn't see any beach umbrellas or masseurs when I was there. But my older gal did enjoy collecting tiny seashells and was most thrilled when my husband caught a tiny crab.

The rooms are big n the kitchen is well equipped with 4 electric cooker stoves, rice cooker, kettle, blender, toaster, microwave oven. Turtle Mart (supermarket) was a 5mins walk away, fresh produce selection was quite limited but can't complain much because at least there was frozen chicken, pork, prawns, vegetables (carrot, broccoli, bean sprouts, cucumbers, local veg eg. bak choy, kai lan etc), fresh mushrooms, eggs and fruits (apple, watermelon, dragon fruit) so we cooked often. There are no bowls in the kitchenette if you are doing chinese cooking but Housekeeping was most obliging when we asked for soup bowls. The washing machine and dryer was really handy when we had to do last minute laundry for the kids. There was an iron and ironing board but we didn't need to use them.

Coffee club at Turtle Village as many said was indeed cheap and good, 100 Baht (about SGD4.20). We ordered soupy rice (you can choose the ingredients: minced chicken balls or minced pork balls). It was a tad salty so ask them to go easy on the salt or fish sauce. We also ordered food from Kindee restaurant. Food was good and delivery to our room was within 45 mins.

Just a few minor complaints. There is no weighing machine, no mugs, toothbrushes, vanity mirror in the toilet. Most hotel/resorts would have these. There were mosquitoes around the resort and sometimes inside the rooms so do bring insect repellents for the kids and make use of the can of pesticide that is placed inside the wardrobe and the mosquito coil in the balcony..

On arrival to the airport, you’ll be accosted by blue t-shirt taxi drivers – don’t use them as they will be overpriced. Instead, head out of the airport and turn right, you will see a metered taxi counter where prices are displayed and fixed – much cheaper than the blue shirts.

In terms of my thoughts about the place:

We stayed in a 2 bed apartment for a week. However it’s not on the beach, you need to walk 10-15mins. Still nice though.
The apartment was lovely, furnishings a high standard and the view overlooked the pond. The kitchen was well equipped though lack of oven and only 2 hobs. It had a good ranged of kitchen utensils but no basics such as salt or pepper. They do provide 2 large bottles of drinking water a day.

The level of cleaning was mediocre, we finally had to complain that the cleaner was not replenishing the toiletries, putting away the dishes once washed or even emptying all the bins – bit slack really. However the standard did improve once we told informed the front desk.

Mai Khoa beach is a nature reserve (turtles come lay their eggs here when in season) so there is no facilities, sun beds, bars etc on the beach itself… which was marvellous… very unspoilt and mostly deserted. Fantastic if you want peace and quite. If you want life, go elsewhere or stay around the pool.

Because it’s remote, the only one grocery shop next to the resort. The shop was pricey by Thailand standards, twice the price of other shops in town. The only semi-expensive place to eat is the Coffee Shop in the tiny shopping centre next to the apartments. Everywhere to eat and drink in the resort or nearby hotels are very expensive (by local standards) UK /USA hotel prices! This is my main whinge… you are a bit stranded unless you want to pay ridiculous prices to go into town as there is a monopoly for the taxi (double meter taxi prices) You’re best bet is to arrange car hire BEFORE you get here via the internet, as everything on there is overpriced.

The gym is well equipped and they have a number of free exercise classes. I want to one of the Pilates session, held in the open, however the number of flies buzzing around my head was most distracting so I didn’t try another one. They give you free water and towel in the gym. They charge 250 baht for 2.5 hours cycle hire.

You can also lend DVDs for free, plus free wi-fi in the rooms were a bonus.

The swimming pool is nice, they incorporated spa jets in the pool with seating areas around some of the sides. The pool attendents are friendly and will come and give you free ice drinking water. They have a happy hour 5-7ish, we tried the cocktails but was disappointed as they were on the weak-side and not up to scratch.

Day trips
We did 2 days trips: Sea Canoe and Phi Phi island by speedboat.
The Sea canoe was a fun day out and we definitely recommend it. You can get it cheaper by booking it in town (office price is 3800 baht). The guides are friendly and lunch was plentiful and tasty.

Phi Phi island by speedboat ended up a great day out, however be warned! There were around 80-100 people for the trip so they split us in different boats. The group we were in (approx 30 people) was allocated a so called catamaran – which it was not! A number of passengers (with the support of the rest) insisted on a speedboat and we had to argue for an hour until the manger relented and gave us a speedboat! So be careful if you book this trip not to get palmed off with a crappy slow boat!

Phuket Town is worth a day trip for shopping, also a great opportunity to stock up on drinks and groceries fro the apartment.

All is all, we had a fantastic time. Not that great for kids as there’s not a lot to do, but great for couple looking for a romantic getaway. The staff are super friendly and helpful.

I spent great time here! Excellent service and especially restaurants. I am very selective when it comes to food, but there I wanted to try almost everything. My room was cleaned up perfectly several times a day. Entertaiment was also very good, nice classes of yoga.

We stayed 4 days on the invitation by a friend on the timeshare.

Well, in short, what i really love about the hotel was the kids club. They had so many interesting activites to keep the kids entertained ! Like smoothies making, cookies baking , umbrella painting etc..

Didnt like the location, as it was in the middle of no where... The hotel didnt really have a beachfront, and there were no deckchairs on the beach. What was good were the sea activiites that you can take part in for free..

Food - , as previously written, was very limited. Pastries at half price, happy hour at the pool bar was great. We tried the japanese buffet too at the hotel restaurant. It was enjoyable. I wont say it's very expensive, reasonable price for a hotel buffet. But the restaurant does get full on japanese night, so it's better to make reservation.. We also tried coffee club and the bar at turtle village.. I would say that turtle village hasbetter thai food, but the pub has nice western food, especially at night, when they have live music too !

Tours- Did a speedboat tour with phukethotdeals.com. Service was great ! I called them and within an hour, they came to the hotel to collect payment and give me the voucher.. We also had a private transfer for our party of 7. We had a pretty new boat, and it was actually not bumpy at all.. Lunch was nothing spectacular, but okay, as the kids enjoyed the pasta and rice... The crew on board also provided good service. As for the snorkelling, i would say if you have been to tioman/cebu, tioman/cebu is better.. You see nicer corals in tioman..more varieties in cebu.. But, it was better than snorkelling in bali though. But if you have never done snorkelling, this is nice as you get to see many fishes.. Maya bay is nice too

Presentation - the guy was very persistent in selling, spent 90mins explaining the benefits..Price wise, it was attractive, i must say, but it didnt suit our travel needs..

Anatara presentation - next door, Anatara resort is also giving a presentation.. We went for it too, They took us on a tour to see the place ..Very nice feel , like the villas run by angsana in bintan.. The guy was not pushy, and you get some vouchers at the end of the 90mins too..

Overall - will i return to marriot mai khao ? I dont think so, although the stay was nice, service was great and my kids love the club... Most of the time, we were by the pool and i feel more like i was in bintan.. In fact, i personally enjoy bintan / desaru more.. because i prefer to be at the beach than the pool...If i like to hang out at pools, i might as well hangout at home.. Maybe the hotel can put out some shade or deck chairs for people to enjoy the beach a little more ..
