I haven't met a person yet that does not appreciate being pampered. At the Château de la Cazine the team of staff seems to be masters of the art. I recently spent several days there and despite the inclement weather, enjoyed a very memorable stay, which without a doubt will be repeated.
The Château's setting is very rural. It sits in an extensive park ensuring calm and quiet at the hotel and making it an ideal spot to escape the mayhem and the complications of life. The far reaching views from our bedroom window sweep down over two large lakes and around to the large arboretum. I was charmed by the pastoral landscape, the cattle and horses grazing near the hotel and the wild life that appeared in the grounds during our stay.
We were welcomed to the hotel by the manager, who initially showed us the stunningly decorated communal rooms. Being an admirer of historical architecture, I fully appreciated their elegance - the lofty windows, the chinoiserie and the intricate plaster mouldings. Our room was very spacious, with lots of natural light and was well equipped. The imaginative layout of the room meant that the generously proportioned bathroom area was hidden behind the large bed head. The room was supremely comfortable with lots of attention to details.
Having installed our luggage in 'notre chambre', we were then able to savour our first sample of the hotel's kitchens and wine cellars. We were immediately impressed by the excellent standard of products from both. This gastronomic prelude made us look forward to our dinner that evening. To work up an appetite for this, we chose to, despite the weather, explore the grounds, the woods and the lakes. If the weather had been kinder there would have been a photographic opportunity around every corner. We discovered a beautiful 16th century chateau which is to be the hotel's spa, but is not yet functional. (You can however be indulged with beauty treatments in the hotel by the friendly and helpful beautician)
The dinner in the dining room was another highlight. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The sommelier guided us to choose some excellent wines and I was assured by my husband, a lover of French wines, that the wine list was one of the best he had seen in some time. The 'cuisine' was delicious, one exquisite dish after another.
I think you can tell we enjoyed ourselves. We were quite content to remain in the hotel and grounds and did not feel very inclined to spend much time exploring the region surrounding the Château, although the area of the Creuse close to the château is extremely beautiful and dotted with picturesque timeless villages.
