A definite must-visit site when you come to China, these tolous or earthen houses, date back over 900 years and allow a glimpse into Hakka culture, traditions and architecture. Chuxi is one of the better preserved ones, and there are entire Hakka families still living there. You should also try some of the home-style cooking in the homes. You should be reasonably fit as there is some climbing involved. Some of the tulous have converted some rooms into motel rooms but we decided to give these a miss during the cold December days.
