This experience was icing on the cake for our trip to North Kerala. The backwaters of Bekal/Kasargod are reputedly less touristic and crowded than the famed Allepey backwaters of the south. We didn’t book in advance, but took a chance and called up the Bekal Boat Stay company after reading all the positive reviews. We were in luck, an evening cruise was available.
Getting there from Bekal was slightly complicated, not to be helped by the inaccurate Google maps but soon we were on board, just the two of us with a boat to ourselves. The sight you see is water, bordered by a thick fringe of coconut trees. The trees here grow so densely, that they stretch outwards towards the water for sunlight! It’s a beautiful sight.
Our journey started at around 6PM, lazily drifting through backwaters with a cup of tea and snacks. We were then given the option to dock at a nearby village, and watch the sunset at the beach, to which we happily consented! When we clambered back on board, we slowly made our way back.At this point, there wasn’t much ambient light about and we docked in the middle of the water, and dinner was prepared. The food was fantastic, especially the fish which was in fact bought from the local fishermen near the beach we visited.
This experience is obviously well sought during most vacations to Kerala, but this company has it all going well – well maintained boats, thoughtful excursions, amazing food in a beautiful landscape.
