“Living a dream”
Reviewed June 22, 2014

We had been there in June second week - and were hesitant about travel because our train booking of pune-kasargod by Purna express did not confirm till last moment and we had to at last take pune-mangalore Airavat Volvo and by road till Bekal. This location seems somewhat difficult to reach, but the road from Manglore-Bekal was so beautiful and scenic that it took our 14 hour travel fatigue away.

The hotel itself is a lavish property spread across a large area and is in between an awesome backwater and a private beach. If you are a kind of person who enjoy not counting number of locations you visited but admire very few beautiful locations taking time, Vivanta by taj, bekal is the place for you. The rooms are beautiful, private sit out itself was a bliss and very relaxing. Also enjoyable were the bicycle rides (Cycling after a lot of time- so took it easy with the slight up-hills in hotel campus but completely enjoyed cycling.) Also tried Archery- which is 400 bucks extra (and I tell you, not as easy as it seems seeing someone doing it in a photo :) )

Pros - Excellent location and food. Local specialties are worth tasting, we tasted and liked Avial, Appam, rice Idli, raagi Idli and Sambar. Especially loved the excellent spongy Idli's and yummy sambar in the breakfast. The sambar was cooked perfect way with right amount of spices. Though there were many choices in buffet breakfast, the idli and sambar was so good that I had it all the 3 days. The staff is polite and always helpful.

Cons-
1. No tea/coffee served poolside (Now for a non-alcohol drinker like me, who is a tea crazy person and prefers having masala chaai even in 36 degree Pune summer, it felt like a complete injustice. It was raining and beautiful view and prefect weather for sipping a good tea or steaminf hot coffee @ poolside after swimming. I really don't know why this bias about people ordering tea/coffee at poolside.)

2. As someone already mentioned in one review- No Indian style commode showers for room Toilets (I could find them in spa washrooms though.)

3. Changing rooms somewhat away from swimming pool, as they are the spa changing rooms inside the spa and gym building. So you have to go inside(go changing after swim) and come out dripping wet (in case of after having a shower and going for swim) and making the smooth spa building floor wet and slippery.

4. The way connecting rooms and front lobby should be well lighted, especially the back shortcut connecting to lobby corridor.

Room Tip: All rooms are good with one or other positive point - we had been in room 822 which was superior cha...

We had booked a deluxe room with plunge pool. The room we were given (no. 441) was adjoining the main kitchen. There was a lack of privacy as anyone from the kitchen could easily see us swimming in our room and the odour from the kitchen was so over whelming that we had to keep our room closed at all times. The ac in the room was not working. After about an hour of checking (since we were told by our attendant that the room will take a while to cool) we called the reception and they sent a technician to fix the ac. The next day the water from our plunge pool drained out automatically. Again the technician had to be called. He told us there was a problem with one of the water pipes but the water would be filled by 10am. The pool wasn't even half way filled until 12 in the afternoon. Our main reason for getting this room was so our 3 year old son who is a water baby could wake up and take a swim in the pool the first thing in the morning. Obviously we were disheartened with the room and asked for a change of rooms.

The other room we were given was fine. The first room was serviced with bare essential toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion) but the second one had a wider selection befitting afire star.

However, I must state that although the food at Vivanta is delicious their service is horrible. We ordered all our meals inside the room but every meal would have something or the other missing. Like if you called for eggs there would be no salt and pepper accompanying the order. By the time you would call for it the food would get cold. On the last day I specifically asked for salt and pepper with my breakfast of scrambled eggs and I sent empty shakers!!

The room service menu is limited and items like fish are marked with a green dot suggesting that they are fit for vegetarians to consume. The bar in the hotel is ill equipped. There was no bartender to serve us at 11:30 am . After being made to wait for half an hour the hotel sent an ordinary waiter (with no knowledge on making cocktails) to fix us our drinks.

There is frequent power failure at the hotel. Although the generator starts automatically you actually have to switch on the ac every time the power switches to generator mode. This is an inconvenience especially in the night when you are sleeping.

The only thing we seemed to like about the hotel was the Spa. We tried 3- 4different therapies and enjoyed each one of them.

Room Tip: If you are looking for privacy and a water filled pool to swim in without the nauseating odour of fo...

A property build in fusion with the Balinese design and Kettuvallam houseboats offers some of the most outstanding architecture capped with the typical super hospitality and warmth Taj is known for towards its guests.
The high energy bar, specially designed meals for your taste in the uniquely made restaurants are a treat to the taste buds.where the chef goes that extra mile to even prepare the Sadya (typical Kerala cuisine)for the guests.
To calm the nerves there is Jiva Grande Spa one of the biggest in the country offering some one of the most soothing spas and massages.
The Plunge pools are a delight to live in and enjoy luxury to the fullest at affordable package rates.
This again endorses my view once a Taj guest always a Taj guest................
A good walk to the beach and to the Bekal Fort is an added attraction to this beautifully designed property.

Just came off a 4 day stay with the family of consisting of wife and 2 pre-teen kids. We booked 2 double rooms with balconies overlooking the Kappil river. A quick summary

* Around 2 hours by road from Mangalore airport. A taxi from airport costs Rs 2200/- one way. The first 50km are along a decent highway surrounded by lush green vegetation and backwaters. Traffic is quite busy and not for the faint hearted. The last 45 min drive is terrible, non-existent roads. You will be happy to reach the Hotel in one piece as the road from Chemnd, just after Kasaraod is pathetic

* The property is around 3 years old and is a sight for sore eyes. Lush green vegetation all over with clever use of the space available. There are several villas and regular rooms.

* This is a place to just unwind and therefore do have a lot of books to read or have a horde of people to keep yourself occupied. There isn't much to do really. The beach is non existent especially in Monsoon as the waves are rough and dangerous

* Breakfast is great. Lunch and dinner options, while tasty, are somewhat restricted. But do try the local Kerala cuisine, especially the fish and paratha preparations

* Pool is small but decent. The bar is quite nicely designed and is a great place to unwind.

* The Bekal fort, which is around 15 min away, is an okay sort of place. Nothing much to do really. You are ok to spend 30 min there

Now the other bits

* Looks like the place is manned by trainees, since the property is new. It shows. Whether its at the recept8 ion or at the breakfast area. Or room service. The trainees do try hard but if you are used to 5 * properties elsewhere and used to certain standard, prepared to be surprised. These people are helpful and try hard but they will probably need to put a lot of senior folks to improve the quality of the service

* Since the place is literally in the middle of nowhere, you are kind of stuck to the resort. Not bad in itself. But if you want to try out Kerala sights and food, the nearest town, Kasaragod, is a good 45 min away on terrible roads. In that context, you got to set your expectations right.

Overall, a nice place that is trying hard to get better. Not yet in the other TAJ property league. The location is a bit of a dampener , really, unless they get better connectivity especially the roads.

If you have options along the West coast of India for your next holiday, you may definitely want to think hard before choosing Taj Bekal

Room Tip: I heard the Villas with the splash pools are good but we didn't get those.

We stayed at Vivanta by Taj, Bekal for 3 nights in May, 2014. The Hotel is around 90 minutes’ drive from Mangalore airport. We had chosen the Deluxe Delight Room with Plunge pool. The cottage was cleverly done up to give the impression of being isolated and had its own swimming pool (plunge pool) and outdoor tub. However the pool was 4.9 feet deep which makes it dangerous for small children. The interiors of the cottage were very spacious with a seemingly open air bathroom which was very discomforting (even though the glass doors were opaque)! To reach the restaurant “Latitude” we had to walk back to and beyond the beautiful reception area. The food was good but the service seemed a little unenthusiastic and lethargic. The breakfast buffet had a variety of options and was very satisfactory. The beach, a short walk away is clean and had a hotel staff doubling as a life guard. However, the water is very rough and not fit for swimming.

My son’s birthday fell during our stay and he was thrilled to be wished by many of the hotel staff that he met! Chef Pravin whipped up a delicious pineapple cake for him, with compliments of Taj which we found very thoughtful. Thanks! A very nice gesture indeed!

The entire resort was filled with lush greenery and small ponds with lotus and fishes, and felt very serene. The staff even though very courteous, something seemed missing. Either they are understaffed or maybe they lack proper training. Regular refilling of toiletries was not being done, but on request, things were provided.

The resort has very limited activities and there is also not many sightseeing options nearby.

Overall, even though we had a relaxing stay, comparing with the various Taj properties we have stayed in, we feel that the “something” which differentiates a Taj property with others, was missing.

We stayed here in April 2014. We had the deluxe delight plunge pool room which was so very beautiful. It was so romantic with a gorgeous outdoor bathtub setting and a romantic double swing next to the plunge pool.. ideal for honeymooners. The rooms are done up beautifully, the food is great and the Jiva grande spa was a great rejuvenating experience. Though the spa is a bit pricey. The only downside is lack of activities. besides the pool and kayaking on the backwaters there was not much to do, so children can get bored but it is great for honeymooners and Spa enthusiasts. The Taj hospitality is as good as can be.

Room Tip: The Deluxe delight plunge pool is the room to be in.
