Taj Bekal Resort & Spa, Kerala

Anything that is scarce is valued. That is the reason why one might appreciate lunch at Taj Vivanta than in Mangalore or Bangalore. If you are driving towards Mangalore from Kannur or Kasargod, there are hardly any nice places to stop for lunch other than some very pedestrian places. But if you are looking to splurge or want to go to a more fancy (and comfortable) place for lunch, head for Taj Vivanta in Bekal. It is delightful to step into the luxury of the hotel’s premises after hours on the road and be able to visit its restaurant, which offers buffets and a la carte. The staff is understanding and guide visitors first to the restrooms. The interiors are done up the Kerala way with pillars and a few Theyyam dolls. The way to the restaurant from the lobby is relaxing with water, fishes and a living room-like space (with booklined shelves) flanking it. The buffet itself is good as in other Taj hotels though the spread is not as varied. For instance, the desserts are certainly not as varied as it would be in, say, Taj Westend, Bangalore. But then the hotel probably does not get as many customers in the wilderness of Bekal as it would in Bangalore. There is vegetarian and non vegetarian buffet and I took the vegetarian buffet, which had the usual suspects: peas pulao, dals, vegetables, white rice and a variety of rotis made in real time. There was a fairly good range of salads and for diehard “curd rice” fans, it was there too. Desserts included one sugar-free pastry, some flavoured cheesecakes, a brownie and a ‘payasam’ made of saboodana (sago) and vermicelli. At over Rs. 1000 a person, it was a little overpriced but then it is a five-star and if you consider remaining hungry for another two hours till you reach Mangalore, you will settle gladly for it.

Room Tip: A delight finding a five star hotel at an unexpected place.

We reached Bekal after a long drive from Mangalore. Our premium indulgence room was ready. It is a luxurious suite with plunge pool. There is a nice swing in the courtyard. You have steam facility in your own room
Property is off the beaten track -quiet and peaceful. The food is good. We pre-ordered the kerala thali one day and were quiet happy with it.The breakfast buffet was noteworthy. There is a small library from where you can borrow books.Service was fine and we had no complaints. It is a nice place to recharge your batteries

We arrived with 2 children (5 and 10 months old) and were promptly attended to and moved to our room. At the entrance of each premium and deluxe rooms there is a Ganesha idol, which is not maintained (sad!). At the time of reservation, I had requested if the water in the plunge pool can be reduced to 3.5 feet. The only purpose of getting the room was for my son to play in the pool. During the reservation process, it was confirmed that they would, but when we went there, it was communicated to us that it is not possible.

The ambiance of the room is great and the property is exceptionally well maintained. The housekeeping staff were prompt with whatever requests we had. The beach is at a walk able distance.

Coming to the food! I have better experience dining at my office cafeteria. I believe that they are not really equipped to handle a full restaurant (or was it 2 bad days in a row?). Delayed refills on the buffet, live counter with only one attendant! rather warm inside the (Latitude) restaurant. The food certainly does not warrant any special mention.

Bekal in Kerala is the land less travelled and explored. Having lived in a bunglow in Mumbai all these years, our obvious choice was the Premium Indulgence villa of Vivanta by Taj which really lived up to its name - sheer indulgence with state-of-the-art interiors, an infinity plunge pool, a large swing bed, open-air bath tub and a plush greenery-facing lounge area. The thatched roof facade too is in keeping with Kerala kettuvellom. The whole property exudes serenity and tranquility.

Buffet breakfast and dinners at Latitude restaurant was good while Kerala Sadya lunch on banana leaf had some goof-ups - service was slow and a couple of dishes were not authentic. The stay at Vivanta was sheer luxury and we enjoyed Kayaking on Kappil river which meanders through the property. It was a feeling of elation as we took long walks on sandy beaches flanked by Kappil river and the ocean.

Taj brand of hospitality was evident right from the time we stepped in to the reception area till we were ready to check out - courteous, friendly and helpful!

Room Tip: Premium Indulgence Villas as they offer privacy and peace.

I went here for my honeymoon and booked a premium room with private pool. it's a brilliant property, excellent food and good service. If you want to leave everything behind and unwind it's the best place. Bekal is a small place it's just the property that's breathtakingly beautiful. There isn't much to do in the city and it's about an hour and a half from the airport.

We went to bekal for our 1st year anniversary and i must say the property is beautiful. its really clean , well maintained and just stunning .. we took the premium temptation villa with a plunge pool and it was just amazing !

FOOD the 1st day we reached we decided to eat the bbq place near the pool ! it was really bad ! the food quality was just below average ...we were just scared after this thinking the food here would be horrible ..and there is nowhere else to go .. but the food at Latitude on all days after that and even room service was just amazing ! quality at its best .. so the bbq is something you can avoid .... we loved the food otherwise ... although their ice cream was over priced considering it was a small scoop and watery when it came.. apart from this food was amazing .

Service : was amazing ! you know its a taj when you get service like that ! they are soo creative , courteous and they smile almost all the time ! its just really ... other hotels must learn service from taj ..

BUT THEY FORGOT ABOUT OUR ANNIVERSARY ... EVEN THOUGH I HAD EMAILED THEM BEFORE ABOUT IT which they acknowledged .. This was just sad ... all hotels make it a point that they remember important occasions and do something special ... but they forgot dint do anything

BEACH / BACKWATERS - Stunning ! just stunning !

SPA - awesome and the spa rooms are huge !! i have never seen such big rooms.... better than most of the spas i have been to

OVERALL this is a stunning place ! you must visit it once in your life .. id love to go back again even after a few let downs....

Room Tip: all rooms are nice :) most of em have plunge pools .. check with the hotel

Words can not explain my experience here. This resort is a dream. If I ever win the lottery I am signing a lease. I had some issues getting to India because I was not as pro-active as I should have been in getting the visa done. So I got stopped at the airport in Dubai and ended up staying there for 10 days waiting for my visa to India to be stamped into my passport. These 10 days were 10 days the resort was working with me while I was in Dubai.
After getting to the resort I've never experienced such a hospitable greeting and i appreciated it. They had a nice soothing juice for us. They drove us to our suit, which they upgraded for me to a private pool and outdoor Balcony swing bed. It was so romantic and relaxing. the pictures show some of the beauty but it is a place i will make that trip again and again.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the private pool suit. Even if you don't swim the size of the outdoor area you have i...
