“Farm Experience”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights in late Sep. Jackie was the perfect hostess, greeting us with a lovely Devon cream tea. Room was on the small side but considering the farm is 16th century it was still fantastic. Breakfasts were huge cooked by Tony, homemade jams fantastic. There is a lounge room that you can utilise. Walked around the farm track, pheasants flying everywhere, lots Jacob sheep and Lupin the farm dog will walk with you. View overlooking West Buckland is what you would expect from the Devon countryside.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, when we had the 3 bedded family room. Good bathroom, clean all round and so on. My reservation is more of a cautionary point if you like a medium bed. The beds are probably the firmest I have ever tried to sleep, an I have a good quality 'firm' at home. Also, the general sitting room is not in the same building as the family room, so might not suit a family who want to be within sound of a child. On the other hand the room is of a very good size.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We're so sorry to hear now and not whilst you were here, that you had difficulty sleeping, as we try to make everyone's stay here as comfortable as possible and have a lovely, quality, soft mattress cover we could have fitted to your bed. For families with young children (and anyone else) we have free baby listening devices available for this room and many other useful facilities such as, the use of a microwave and fridge. Thank you for highlighting these points and when you visit again please let us know your requirements.

My husband, 2 year old daughter and I stayed here for a our first night stopover in Devon. We were looking for something relaxing with a traditional and rural feel and this really was exactly that. The room was perfect for us as our daughter had her own single bed in the same room, tucked into the corner and the room was filled with lots of interesting little toys and trinkets for her to play with. The farm animals, little park and main house with lounge area and toys meant that we were always entertained. Only difficulty we had was getting food on the first night. We found a wonderful family friendly pub about 20 min drive away which was surprisingly booked up when we arrived just before 7! (last night in Aug so busy still) so recommendation would be to book in advance. All was not lost as we had great takeaway fish and chips. Woud def return in future.

Having raised 4 children we know full well that if the children are happy, then you can relax and enjoy each others company too, hence the plentiful toys!
The Devon cream tea on arrival seems to go down well, the scones are home-made as is the jam which is made from the fruit grown in the garden and the clotted cream is purchased locally.
Thank YOU so much for taking the time to post such a lovely review and we look forward to welcoming you here again soon :)

Terrific B&B on a working farm. Focus is on the substance of all the right things to make a great stay for a family - bedrooms, food, games / equipment. My 5 year old was presented with 2 day old moorhen chicks within about 10 mins of arrival and between that and the ping pong table in the shed he was hooked. Agree with all the other reviews about breakfast - wide ranging and delicious. Jackie and Anthony manage to deliver great quality of experience while remaining relaxed and friendly - definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Family room is a great size with double and two singles. Lashings of hot water!

Had a wonderful time at Huxtable Farm and really didn't want to leave. Apart from heading off to surf (30-45 mins away), my 6yr old would have happily stayed on the farm all day, every day (much down to farm dog Lupin and new friends from other families staying there I think!). Our room was apart from the main house and lovely and cool and we had the door open much of the time as it was so peaceful. Jackie and Anthony are very accomodating and friendly and the breakfasts are superb!!!!!
Next time we go (& we will!) we will take a small bbq as the downside of the peace is that you have to travel for food in the evening. You are provided with a fridge though so you can eat in the day and bring a picnic back. Again, our hosts provided us with crockery, cutlery, butter.....
My daughter made friends with others and we could hear them playing without worrying about them, finding exciting hidey holes and running about the lawn.
All in all we had a great time, my best holiday ever.

Room Tip: The barn family rooms give you your own space :)

Antony and I appreciate you taking the time to write a review and so pleased that you enjoyed the tranquillity of Huxtable Farm. Lupin, the dog loves attention, as you know and is always happy to walk you around the Devon Wildlife Farm Trail. Soon after you departed 4 Guinea Fowl eggs hatched so the solo chick now has company! Looking forward to welcoming you all again when your daughter is keen to do some more surfing :)

We stayed in a family room which was well appointed and spotlessly clean. Jackie & Anthony the hosts were welcoming and attentive. The food was absolutely gorgeous and my petsonal favourite was Jackie's home made breads. 5 star service at 3 star prices ... The family loved it here.

Beautiful medieval farmhouse set in breathtaking woodland and countryside. The accommodation is wonderful and you feel like you live there you are so welcomed. Jackie and Anthony Payne are the perfect hosts, knowledgeable about what to see and do and friendly and helpful at all times. The walk around the farm's land is not to be missed and you will be accompanied by Lupin the sheepdog who is better than a map! There is also a lovely garden to sit in and have coffee. The breakfasts are amazing and include proper vegetarian options and Jackie's scrumptious home made jams. You will also meet the tame sheep including "Specsavers" the partially sighted lamb and have the chance to buy home made prooduce and products. Nothing was too much trouble for the Paynes from the Devon cream tea welcome to the local knowledge. Jackie's attention to detail is amazing and I loved the little touches like the vases of wild flowers in the rooms every day and the dozen farm laid eggs given to us when we left. You can bring your own wine and glasses are provided as are dvd players in the rooms and free wifi. We will definitely be back next time in North Devon. Ticked all the boxes. Blissful. Nick & Di Perry

Room Tip: Choice of rooms in the farmhouse or in the converted barn. Primrose room fab.
