The name of the glacier is Gomukh, under Bagirathi Peaks 1, 2 and 3. Gangotri is the base camp for 36 KM high-altitude trek to Gomukh.
There is one guest house at Bhojbasa, which is 14 KM from Gangotri and 4 KM short of Gomukh. Decent dormitory accommdation is also available by GMVN (www.gmvnl.com) at such god-forsaken place.
It is out of world experience to trek in barren mountain, with little vegitation, but suddenly you turn spiritual. One thing is for sure, it is not for fun, the journey tests your physical and mental strength.
You must take a porter from Gangotri, who will be your guide also, as you need to be careful about certain climatic indication. They would be able to tell you when it is likely to snow, when to stop, when to start and everything. Keep a lot of snacks and water as you would not find any living soul for 18 KM (one way). You can enjoy the water from glaciers.
Keep sun cream as your skin will get sun-burn in no time. Also, keep a stick that comes very handy when you have to negotiate rocks, streams and other small tracks.
It is important to take permit to visit the location as it is protected area. You can take the permit for INR 150 at the entrance of the Gangotri National Park. But remember to carry all the plastic bottles, empty biscuit pack etc. You can not dispose the trash in Himalayas, and you have to dispose those back at Gangotri. Else, there is heavy penalty.
