Visiting Yamdrok Lake is one of the highlights of our Tibetan holiday. This is my second visit to Yamdrok Lake, and it is still as beautiful and serene as 8 years ago. The winding road up the Kambala Mountain Pass is breath taking. But if you are prone to car sickness, it would be wise to take a pill before the long journey. The restaurant near the lake is closed during winter, so it was a good thing we started the day early. By the time we got back to the nearest town, it was about 1.30pm, just nice for lunch.

This lake is quite long, winding and very serene with bluest waters... And also well protected so that people cannot go to the lake as and where they prefer along the lake. The road goes across the lake for several kms and still, there are only few places ( 2 or 3?) where one can reach the lakeside. We stopped at one place ( where many cars were stopped ) and went near the lake and started taking some photos... but suddenely, a police car came and all of us vanished from the scene! We visited this place on 24th Sept, 2014 when we were driving from Shigatse to Lhasa. We did not stop at the main area, as we had already did one unusual stop.
We stopped at the top of the mountain to get the full view of the lake and by that time, it started light snowing and getting cold. Our driver informed that it was quite unusual in Sept...Anyway, a very memorable experience....

My wife and I visited in October 2014. You visit the lake on your way from Lhasa to Shigatse. The lake is near the top of a high mountain pass. The scenery is breathtaking. The lake has beautiful blue water and the mountains in the backround are covered in snow. You pay a small entry fee of $6.40 USD per person. This keeps up the area, the tiolets, etc. Many picture taking opportunities in this area. For a small fee you can pose with and have your pictures taken with Tibetan Masiffs, Tibetan Goats, and Tibetan Yaks. Of course we took pictures with them all. This is also a good spot to get out of the car and stretch your legs. A real treat.

A lake not to be missed while driving from Lhasa to Shigatse is Yamdrok Lake, a freshwater lake and it is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. The drive in this area was simply awesome with picturesque views as this lake is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains fed by numerous small streams; views taken out from fairy-tales.

Lake Yamdrok is about 90 km to the west of the lake lies the Tibetan town of Gyantse, the third largest of the old Tibetan towns while Lhasa is a hundred km to the northeast. According to local mythology, Yamdok Yumtso lake is the transformation of a goddess that one must really marvel for yourself when in Tibet.

Yamdrok Lake has a power station that was completed and dedicated in 1996 near the small village of Baidi at the lake’s western end. This power station is the largest in Tibet

We went end of May and from the moment we were driving up, you can see the turquoise colour of the lake! The sky was super blue and you really feel like in heaven. Highly recommend travellers to go during May or June as our guide said it's the best time to have clear sky across the country. The water is so clear in the lake and we spent an hour taking pictures.
Do avoid the toilet near where the cars park, unless you want to have a unique "experience" to share with your friends afterwards !
