“Beautiful location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

This hotel is beautifully located in an attractive building. We stayed there for one night on a Internet deal. We were made welcome and our room was clean and bright. Our evening meal was good, but what a pity that not all of the staff serving us were as professionally dressed as they might have been. This is clearly an expensive building to maintain, but worth the effort. We wish the owners well in their future.

This hotel was frustrating because all the difficult bits were good. The location was fabulous, the building was beautiful and the chef really knew what he/she was doing, food wise. We enjoyed two delicious dinners with good wines and two equally good breakfasts, once the waitress had arrived!

The things which were wrong could be rectified easily. Our welcome on arrival was unfriendly and the receptionist badly needs some training in how to be hospitable (or maybe a different job) but the young lad who took our bags and served in the bar was charming and helpful, as were the waitresses.

The bedrooms were tired and tatty, both the unrefurbished and the supposedly refurbished. However our main concern was that the staff appeared to lack any form of effective management. Both the staff and the guests would benefit from better leadership.

My wife and I just spent two nights (12th/13th) via Travelzoo and we were very impressed, from the approach to the hotel, the gardens, the recent refurb of the main building ie the reception, the dining room & lounge area with big changes still ongoing. The majority of staff were very good ( a couple forgot how to smile!). The en-suite bedroom itself was very comfortable (room 18 in the courtyard ), a little tired but spotlessly clean plus a hotel TV that worked. Food was very good, although a little expensive for the three-course menu on the second night - not part of the Travelzoo deal, but that's business. On expressing our thoughts and comments over coffee with a couple in the lounge, as you do, we eventually discovered the gentleman (Roger) was infact the owner of the hotel - but we were honest and he accepted our mini 'nit picks'. Overall it was an excellent stay and we would not hesitate to recommend and to go back again.

Room Tip: Avoid 1st floor courtyard rooms if you have dificulty with steep stairs!

Having read previous reviews, we were a little apprehensive even though we were staying for a short break. Immediately on entering the reception area, we instantly liked the hotel. Sure it requires some re-decorating and possibly new carpets and curtains but the building is old and the decor definitely fitted into the period of the building. This must not be changed.
Our room was spacious and very clean but could have done with some more drawer space. Bathroom needed refurbishing.
The food both at breakfast and dinner was very well presented and good quality. Plenty of choice on the menu.
All staff were very friendly and we both came away feeling looked after.
A few grumbles though - the light in the bathroom was reported as faulty on the first night and never repaired; at breakfast one item was not available one morning and never replenished; the windows in our room could not be opened having been "painted fast" over the years - this made the room exceptionally stuffy and warm; the staff could be more knowledgable about local activities; reception was not always manned; the spelling and grammar in the Hotel Welcome Pack and on the menu was atrocious and obviously had never been checked before going into print. All these points require attention. The hotel has just been "rescued" by new owners and even small issues still require attention let alone the bigger issues of converting the old swimming pool area into a function suite.

Thanks for taking the time to write in with your comments.
The lighting in the bathrooms have now all been replaced throughout the hotel, so hopefully we will have no repeat of this type of issue.
Unfortunately some items do run out and I apologise for that.
I will rewrite the Hotel Welcome Pack, something we inherited and I know I need to do.
Not sure which room you stayed in, however our decorator is going around the main house to try and free up painted over windows, though some have been this way for years and will need work on.
Once again thanks for your comments.

We came here or lunch quite a few years ago and were not immpressed and just a little relieved we were not staying there.
However I believe it has new owners and hopefully what once was a long time ago and could be again one of the most beautiful hotels in the country, the scenery and setting are quite magical, with the lake and the building itself is very impressive.

Hopefully the interior will be given a makeover, but I would think it will all take time and a lot of work, so good luck to who ever has bought it. But the first thing I would do is chuck the plastic flowers in the hanging baskets outside the front door. Its a lovely entrance, but has these ridiculous fake flowers hanging either side of the door when at this time of the year there are flowers in abundance. If I was booked in for a weekend and these were the first thing I saw on arrival, I would be very wary about what to expect.
This is just constructive criticism and nothing else.

Thanks for taking the time to write you comments. Noted your comments on the hanging 'silk' flowers, which were a temporary measure, and they have now been replaced with the 'real thing'.
We do have a works schedule in place and yes, rooms etc are being decorated/refurbished. We are making steady progress fitting around both guests as well as the business needs.

We visited in snow and rain in January, and enjoyed our stay and wanted to come back in better weather! In my January review I said that the staff were offhand, but this time the new owners could not have been more helpful and made the stay special. For example, our friends we visited with were given a free upgrade to the suite to be near us. Lovely setting, with friendly birds and young on the lake. Very comfortable room, and excellent free Wifi in the hotel. Very enjoyable meals in the restaurant. Well placed to explore the coast. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Avoid court yard rooms in winter, but lovely in the summer.

We recently spent two nights at Hackness Grange, The hotel is situated in beautiful valley with a stunning backdrop of forests, there is a host of birds and wildlife and a meandering river flowing around the hotel grounds with trout to be seen. The accommodation was very comfortable and clean and very relaxing, the staff were very polite and the service was very good, The food was too a very high standard. it was a great escape and there is plenty to explore in the area. we will be going back soon.
