“Didn't book”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

We were thinking of staying here for a three night break. I checked room price only for a twin which was £180 total. Then I checked the twin room price with breakfast which was £297. How can a hotel justify a cost of £19.50 pp for breakfast ! Needless to say we didn't book.

Delightful looking country house hotel in wonderful countryside but the problems are inside.....bedrooms appear dated and dreary (but clean!). Restaurant serves good food but dated in style....entire house felt cold and unloved. Male staff were excellent....female staff should be fired - they clearly hate guests!

Thank you for your comments. Having recently purchased the hotel I am in the process of a renovation and decoration program that covers both inside and outside and a fair number of rooms have now been completed. That said we are keeping with the traditional 'country house' feel, as preferred by most of our guests and not going down the line of a modern boutique type hotel.
As to the comment "female staff should all be fired", perhaps if you had raised a complaint on the standard of the service to the management at the time and not felt the need of just airing it on such a forum, then we could have looked at it and if appropriate offered guidance to the staff.
Finally I am investing considerable time, effort and money into the hotel and whilst I understand that things cannot happen over night, I can assure you that the hotel is loved and is offering a warm welcome to everyone who comes and stays with us.

I can't say this was the worst hotel we've stayed in but it rated a good third worst. Firstly we booked a superior room (thank god we didn't book a standard room). You opened the door to a narrow corridor with a chair in it a 1960s dressing table and wardrobe gloss painted within the last few years followed. There was then an area for the bed. Two steep uneven steps brought you to the bathroom which overlooked the carpark with only a voile curtain to protect your modesty, this meant showering in the dark!! On the plus side the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We went down to the bar for a drink to find that there was no beer available on draught. The young bar man tried to remedy this but to no avail (not his fault the lad did his best) We had pre-booked dinner in the restaurant, dinner at best was mediocre and probably worth around £15.00 pound a head, not the £30.00 a head we actually paid!! We did however have a decent nights sleep and could not fault the breakfast or the staff. In total our bill with wine was around £220. This was my birthday treat and was more expensive than our stay at the 5 star Raithwaite Hall at Sandsend the previous year. We both left very disapointed

On arrival to this hotel it look amazing and the location is stunning and idyllic. The staff on reception were welcoming and helpful. We had a room in the courtyard, which was immaculate and cosy. We didn't really go into the house itself other than to go to reception but it looked good! Again, we can't comment on the food either as we paid for the room only. The hotel is a relatively short drive away from Scarborough, so you are not confined to the hotel. The hotel had activities such as croquet, tennis and golf, as well as a small lake where we enjoyed feeding the ducks! We were slightly disappointed that the hotel's swimming pool was no longer in use, as it was advertised through our booking agent as having a pool. We understand that this is not the hotel's fault and so it was no big deal. Would definitely recommend for a quiet night away!

Many thanks for comments on the hotel, and what a shame that you did not try our culinary delights!
Having recently purchased the hotel, I have started a refurbishment and decoration program throughout the hotel that also includes extensive landscaping too.
As part of the long term plan for the hotel I am aiming to turn it into a 'venue of choice for weddings and functions' so I made the decision to close the pool . I am now in the stage of designing and applying for planning permission to change the area into a function suite.
I do hope that with the changes that are happening at Hackness Grange that we will have the pleasure of your company again and when you next visit you will see improvements to the hotel especially in areas that other reviews have highlighted.
With regard to the swimming pool, once again apologies for your disappointment that it was closed though I hope you can understand the direction I am taking the hotel when you look at the full setting and ambience of Hackness Grange and the potential it has particularly for weddings.

under new ownership with plenty of work to do to bring it back to standard. However, our twin bedded room was clean and bright and had everything that was required for a very pleasant stay. The main reception rooms needed refurbishment but I have stayed in far worse and paid alot more! The staff were very pleasant and helpful. By next summer I suspect the decor it will be greatly improved.

we have just returned from a 3 night stay ,and on first impressions as we arrived in the building ,the young receptionist did not seem very welcoming ,which gave us the question have we stayed at the right place......however having found our own way to room 18 overlooking the courtyard we were very impressed at how clean and presentable and homely our room was.....The bathroom was spotless with hot water and a nice powerful shower or bath complete with soap, body wash, shampoo and lovely white towels on a heated towel rail. The linen was very clean ,working tv,hairdryer and a nice welcome tray of tea ,coffee, buscuits and milk. The room were cleaned every day on our stay with fresh towels All the other staff were helpful and friendly and only to happy to help,we chose not to stay for evening meal as we found it too pricey at £30.00 per person, but plenty of nice places to eat in the surrounding area.Breakfast was well presented ,hot and plentifly and staff very pleasant. The hotel is in a fantastic location and having been just bought out of recievership over the last two months the new owners has done a fantastic job of starting to bring it back to it's former glory, the grounds are pleasent and tennis, crouquet and pitch and putt is available at no extra cost. The swimming pool is in the process of being turned around into a function room, but all in all it is in the most beautifull setting.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: Room 18 in the courtyard, standard double room very good.

We stayed here for one night with our 5 month old and 2 year old.
They wanted to charge us £30 each for an evening meal in the restaurant and £15 for our 2 year old. Which would have been a total waste of money. We thought it was a bit pricey so asked if we could have something to eat in the bar. Which was begrudgingly allowed. When ordering our sandwiches we asked for some chips with them. " no sorry you can't have chips as we are in the middle of service" replies the sour faced woman that served us. When our food arrived it was nice enough and the lovely bar man obviously thought the no chips rule from sour face was out of order and brought us out some chips. He was wonderful and a credit to the place. Very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were ok but our bathroom had alot of black mould around the tiles and felt damp.
Not somewhere I will ever be returning to or recommending I'm afraid.

I am sorry you did not have a happy experience with us. Having only just purchased the hotel I have started the process to redecorate and refurbish the hotel rooms over the coming 6 months. In addition to the interior works I have also engaged landscape gardeners to improve the grounds. Finally the policy of children's meals is also being reviewed.
