“A great place to stay!!!!!”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

Nice way to spend your break away, just relax or read a book. This was just what I needed away from work, so gorgeous here and the hosts are so great and make you feel at home. We stayed for two nights and would have stayed a lot longer but work comes first I guess. Not too far to travel out if you are sightseeing or just visiting. Beach is beautiful there too.

Room Tip: All rooms are clean and what a view you get from each one. Beach, Beach, Beach and more.

Thank you so much Josephine! It was great to meet you both. I'm so glad you had a wonderfully relaxing time here at Driftwood Lodge, and we hope to see you again. Summer is just wonderful here in Doubtless Bay, so come back again soon.

Great view, hosts, happy hour, beach toys. Myself & boy were going to stay only 1 night but had such a nice time we kept extending our break. John & Jackie very friendly & encouraged guests to socialize if they wanted. They are pretty laid back and accommodating. I guess rooms have been done up since previous reviews, furniture & bathroom in my room was modern & room was clean. I thought the price was competitive with other beach side motels. Good fishing just a short paddle out. We will be back.

We had prebooked and paid online for 4 nights.I wish we hadnt.
Arriving at 8pm which is not late,we were greeted by darkness,The woman then critised us for not just ringing and booking by the phone.
The next day after being out all day,we came back to find no fresh towels and rubbish still in bin.
My daughter went to the office and was told, "we only launder every 2nd day as there is a water shortage in the far north" ,(October is only Spring ,this is not summer here in NZ.)"and we would also have to recycle our rubbish, as the local council rates are so high we will get charged extra for putting out too much rubbish".
The rooms are dated, try 1970's, there was a thick layer of dust under the beds.this was noticeable as there are no carpets.it looks like the carpets have been removed and its just rough concrete.
Although the motel is right on one of the best beaches, it is not worth the price charged.I would give it a one star rating.it was worse than fawlty towers and definitely not funny.

While this is truly a fantastic beachfront location and this is the only reason it gets a rating of two rather than one.

Firstly, the unit we stayed in was:
(a) dirty - cobwebs throughout the bathroom area, dirty toilet area, dirty linen on one of the beds.
(b) smelly - very musty and damp.
(c) under the hosts' lounge, which woke us up every time they walked around at night.
(d) very small.

As for value for money, I think it was very much overpriced. We had some friends (who were also holidaying in the area) come over for a quiet wine on the deck and they were quite aghast at the price we paid. We all agreed that around $130 per night would have been a fairer price rather than $195 we paid.

The owners seemed friendly enough, but quite nit-picky on small things.

Room Tip: Go to another lodge - the one beside Driftwood appeared to be a whole lot nicer!

This motel is virtually right on the beach... fantastic.
The owners are very friendly and helpful but unfortunately we found the units rather tired and in need of an upgrade and the housekeeping was definitely not up to scratch....and because of this we found the nightly rate charged rather expensive....it's as if the high rate was to justify the position of the motel. We think we could have done better and won't be going back again.

My fokes went here a few years ago and recommended the place to us, so my girlfriend and I stayed here for one night on the way up to the Far North/ Cape Reinga.

It’s a hidden gem, really relaxing very comfortable, right on the beach, so the waves lull you to sleep at night.

Spend the day on golden sands, have lunch at the Mangonui Fish Shop (great food and only 5 mins drive) and then BBQ on the deck outside your room for dinner.

Owners live on site and are very helpful and friendly, would definitely stay again.
