It's just over 1.5 hours from Chisinau to Tipova. It was well worth it as we were shown round by the guy who lives and works onsite. He only speaks Russian and a little Romanian but we did manage to work out what he was saying.
After the main church, there are steps down to the caves which are quite steep and rocky in places and it took around 10-15 mins to get down. At the bottom the monastery itself is interesting and there are several cave shrines too.
The guide showed us his living quarters which are basic to say the least!
It's unlikely we're going to find something that unusual again in a hurry - one of those experiences that don't come round very often.
