We stayed in a junior suite over Christmas. Accommodation very good, had a suite facing the courtyard, sheltered from the wind but no real view. The restaurant food was not up to 4 star quality. A limited menu, which didn't change whilst we were there. Special meal Christmas Eve and Christmas Lunch, traditional Portuguese fare including boiled fish, boiled cabbage and potatoes! The housekeeping staff were very good and cleaned our room every day. Had to remeber to put out sign on door handle to get this done. Location away from main beach area but Spa compensated for this. Had a wonderful hot stone massage at a special Christmas price. There is no lounge to sit in after the evening meal so only got to know people who ate at the same time as us. Had half board and visited the local Lidl store for lunch time food. Had a hire car for a day which let us see more. Hotel not far from the train station which is another way of getting around.
Would visit Portugal again but would stay somewhere else.

Lovely modern hotel, excellent a la carte dinning. Good for bird watching over the river we saw many flamingos and Spoonbills from our room.We will certainly return.a hire car would be useful for people with walking difficulties.

This was a wonderful 7 day break. The hotel was excellent in so many ways. All the staff were friendly and welcoming; the food was more than we had hoped for - a la carte each evening on a half board tariff! and the room was to die for. We had a junior suite which was spacious and well equipped with a huge balcony. The room was cleaned daily and you had the option of clean bedding and towels whenever you wished - daily if you wanted! The views from our double balcony made our week. We had views of Portimao, the wide river where local fishermen fished in small boats and kayakers relaxed, where locals dug in the mud for mussels and dozens of cormorants feasted on shoals of fish and then made their daily evening migration to the sea as the sun set. In front of our balcony which faced west and so got plenty of hot afternoon sun where lakes of of flood plain overflow where we watched through our binoculars (wished I'd taken a scope!) almost every sort of wading bird, including white flamingos, herons and egrets. This was complemented by the nesting storks on the many purpose made chimneys near by. The evening sky was filled with seabirds heading out to the sunset and faminfos and storks heading inland to roost in the lakes and pools. We did walk into Portimao, but hired a car for five days to explore along the coast and further inland.

Room Tip: West facing junior suite - Room 322A was great. Hire a car. 5 day hire £47...glad we were given upgrade to air con...24 on one day.

We spent a relaxing 5 night stay here in late October, and the Riverside Agua was just what we were looking for. We wanted a quiet hotel away from the main tourist areas, where we could relax and recharge our batteries! and this hotel ticks all those boxes.

The staff on reception were very helpful.

The rooms were very modern, very clean and the maids visited daily. Very similar to what you would expect of a 4*hotel in the UK.

The SPA was great! maybe a little small for high season? but for our visit it was busy, but not too busy. We used the gym, sauna and steam room on a few days of our stay.

We booked Bed and Breakfast which was good decision. Breakfast was good, with plenty of choice, both hot and cold; but the evening buffet meals were quite poor for a 4*hotel and not great value for money. We only ate here once as a result. The chicken shop at the top of the street (think it was called Monka) was better value, and very popular with locals.

As regards getting around, Portimao is a good walk, but has little to offer. Ferragudo is easily walkable if you are able bodied and offers good beaches, great beach bars and a selection of good restaurants (A Ria is recommended). Praia da Rocha is a short taxi ride away and makes for a good day out.

Overall, a nice relaxing 5 daybreak.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the car park, which has the advantage of facing due west, so plenty of evening sun on the balcony which has glass wall... a real sun trap!
