Everyone knows how cheap Bali is so because of that, I thought it was well worth lashing out on a fancy night out and chose Ju.Ma.Na from the rave reviews. We were staying in Tanjung Benoa and the lady at the hotel taxi desk estimated it would take about 40 minutes' drive. On this particular Thursday evening it took about 27 minutes. We were too disorganised to get there in time for another beautiful Balinese sunset and we arrived at 8pmish after a round-the-world-for-sixpence type taxi ride which we agreed we would never have been able to replicate (in part thanks to the lack of road signs in Bali).
Anyway we arrived at the seriously luxe lobby and were whisked via golf buggy quite some distance down to the restaurant perched on the cliff past all the villas. From glancing down the semi-circular staircase to the restaurant below there were perhaps 5-6 tables of couples and about 3 couples in the upstairs outdoor bar - not very full at all but everyone was in a mellow, nice mood. We drank probably the most expensive cocktails (dirty martinin and a Bloody Mary) in Bali our entire holiday, coming in at about $32, which were well-made but still cheap compared to some of the more expensive bars back home.
Then we were guided downstairs to the terrace which was lit via candles - gorgeous - and protected from the wind by glass balconies. We shared an entree and had a wonderful main although my partner seemed distracted by his boss's email the day before that he was being relocated which distracted me from remembering what the food was. And we had even gone to the hassle of getting the restaurant to email their menu before we left our hotel since they don't list it on their website, but with all the news, we still can't remember exactly what we ate although I think it was salmon! The service was attentive and generous, with them giving us a lemon sorbet between courses as a refreshing "amuse-bouche". Our taxi driver had been waiting, as arranged so that after paying about $US118 we left about 10.15pm.
I later discovered that my partner almost asked me to marry him that night as it was so romantic but he was still feeling upset about his news from work which was slightly spoiling the mood.
So if all is cool at work, and you're feeling romantic, you might just get engaged there!
