The staff were genuinely friendly, the dinner was the best we have had in 3 weeks in the UK, and the host/owner Paul, gave us service above and beyond expectations, borrowing another bed for the night as he didn't have a kingsize bed for us!

We stayed for one night en route to Weymouth and quite frankly wish we hadnt bothered with Weymouth and spent the whole of our break at this very friendly, beautifully situated proper English pub.We arrived on a Friday lunch time (good day to be there Friday) and while V was being entertained by the first of many of the often mentioned wonderful locals i was shown to our our room by Paul who informed me that my car would be ok parked across the road as the last reported crime was 6 years ago when someone scratched their name on a bus shelter! The room superb only outdone by the quality of the food and the feeling that we had somehow been adopted by the oh so friendly locals and staff.I have to say that the pork belly was- as an earlier reviewer stated-the finest i have tasted-well done Liam. Both V and M can,t wait to return to this wonderful oasis on the borders of 3 counties in July-any chance of the pork belly still being on Liam? Since we have been 2 of our friends have stayed and also had a wonderful experience-see you soon.

Stayed here for one night before racing at Wincanton on the Sunday. All staff were friendly and welcoming and we thought that the evening meal was the best we had eaten out in ages - definately recommend the spring veg risotto !!
Beautiful cosy room with all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. Was a bit worried about room above busy pub restaurant but we had the most peaceful night and the best lie-in thanks to the fact that we weren't given a time to be downstairs for breakfast. Would definately recommend to anyone.

Just got back from an overnight stay here. It is a delightful country inn - complete with friendly locals and fantastic food.

The room (£55) was small but has everything you need including en-suite, tea and coffee making facilities and TV with Freeview.

Make sure that you book a table in the restaurant for dinner - Absolutely wonderful food; the best Belly pork I've ever eaten. Breakfast was equally good - and is a pretty relaxed affair!

We used it as a base for Longleat Safari Park - and it is ideally placed for this - being a 20 minute country drive away.

The White Lion is a wonderful place to stay and it is no surprise that there are brown signs for it from the main road. It seems to be one of the only places to stay around that area and, as the village pub, it is definitely the beating heart of the area. We had chosen it because it's not far from Longleat, although it is very centrally located for many differnet towns, villages and attractions.
On arrival we were easily identified as the guests (as this is a proper local pub and most faces are known well there) and given a key to the room and also the side door and were able to come and go as we wished during our stay without having to go through the pub itself.
We stayed in the smaller of its 2 rooms - which is very diminutive but cosy nonetheless. The bed is wonderfully comfy and, best of all it is pitch black and quiet outside at night - ensuring a great night's sleep! Our room had a small en suite with a shower (the larger room has a full sized bathroom) and my only criticism of the place would be the shower which suffers quite badly (as many old buildings do) from black mould. Really they probably need to rip out the whole shower area and mould-proof it and start again to avoid this unsightly problem. However, this is understandbly a bit of an undertaking and the rest of the experience there more than made up for this one issue.
Both the food and drinks were excellent and fairly priced - far better than you would expect from a 'pub'. Breakfast was delicious and seemed to consist of local produce. The portions were great - enough to be filling and not need to eat for the rest of the day but not so much as to feel uncomfortably full. The dining room part of the pub is everything an old english inn should be with stone walls and floors, a mix of wooden furniture and plenty of candlelight and atmosphere. The walls and ceilings are wonky and disproportionate, the floorboards creak and the door hinges growl - it is exactly as a 300 year old pub should be! Even if your home nothing like this place, you intstantly feel as though you could get very comfy there. When you live in or near a city where the life and soul has been ripped out of pubs only to be replaced with the homogenised theme pubs, it's heartening to know that such places do still exist - even if you have to make a bit of a drive to get there. Well worth the trip.
