Norfolk Bay Convict Station

I have not long since returned home from spending four amazing days exploring the sights and surrounds of Taranna and Port Arthur with my sister and mother. When we drove into the grounds of the Norfolk Bay Convict Station we were met by beautiful gardens and manicured lawns and a stunning old building that was our accommodation overlooking Norfolk Bay. As we stepped foot in the door of the historical B&B our host Lorella was there to greet us with a smile and she could not have made us feel more welcome after our flight from Sydney and drive down from Hobart Airport. We just loved Lynton’s freshly baked bread and its aroma that swept the corridors late each night, ready to be served at breakfast the next morning. Lorella’s home made jams were so scrumdiddlyumptious that we bought some to take home with us. The complimentary port in the study by an open fire was always the perfect nightcap to top off a perfect day. We were looked after really well and just loved the complimentary massage chair that was conveniently located outside our Garden Room suite. Location was tranquil that at night you could hear a pin drop and because the skies were clear on our stay we were fortunate to see the stars stretch on for miles above the water. When eating out there isn't a varied choice of nearby restaurants unfortunately and if you do prefer to eat in, there is a barbecue on the premises and I'm sure if given the right amount of notice that your lovely hosts will whip you up a home cooked meal. So a big thank you to Lorella and Lynton for helping make our stay a most memorable and pleasurable one. We're still on a high from our trip so 'we'll be back' :)

The two of us really needed to unwind, after working hard in Hobart, before heading back home to the mainland. Our room was really well fitted out, with ensuite that suited our ageing bones, top quality mattress and bedding, and lighting that enabled reading in bed for each person, as well as comfy couch for watching TV/DVD. Lynton and Lorella, as well as providing an initial tour of this historic place, have a wonderful collection of DVDs for borrowing - eclectic, covering classic movies, politics, history, nature, comedy, and many more categories. The breakfast was to die for, with homemade stewed fruit from the old orchard onsite, waking up to fresh bread cooking smells, even gluten free for one of us. The DVDs, reading materials, comfy couches in the lounge room, added to the ambience of the place, only enhanced by sitting on the verandah to see the views of the sea, or walking on the jetty. Worth returning to Tassie for, so we'll be back.

Room Tip: We went for en suite as an older couple. but the bathrooms for the two single rooms are quite close...

We stayed at the Norfolk Bay Convict Station at the end of last year. It had the sort of historical feel that is so commonplace in Europe but rare in Australia. It felt like it was living history and indeed the walls and their photos tell a story. The hospitality of the personable hosts was exceptional. We had two rooms and both had character and were very clean. We enjoyed the evening glass of port and watched the sunset from the jetty. This was an idyllic night, followed by a rustic home-cooked breakfast which tantalised us from the minute the bread came out of the oven, and once slathered in Lorella's jams and paired with a strong coffee, it made a Tasmanian morning to remember. The only down side was the limited options for dinner in the area.

My husband and I stayed at Norfolk Bay Convict Station a few months ago, arriving soaked to the bone after a long motorbike ride in the rain. Lorella and Lynton were so welcoming and kindly put all of our clothing and gear in the Clothes Dryer while we slipped into some lovely comfy robes. We really didn't want to leave the comfort of the beautiful homestead after getting warm to get dinner so Lynton generously offered some delicious pasta (with fresh crusty bread) that he had just prepared for himself and Lorella and her visiting parents.
While we were in the lovely dining room eating our dinner Lorrella's father wandered in and we started a conversation that lasted for an hour and a half! He was a very interesting man with great stories of his days in Italy and his life in Australia as a migrant arriving with a young family...it was an unexpected and very pleasant evening. The rain had eased after dinner so we went for a stroll out onto the little jetty opposite the homestead which was also a treat, before retiring to a very comfortable room and bed. Breakfast was delicious and our hosts filled us in on a lot of tourist information before we were back on the bike and on our way with good feelings about our special stay. Will definitely recommend and hopefully return one day!

Room Tip: Ask for the room with the magnificent massage recliner right outside the door!
