Was looking forward to getting up to this peak and looking into this amazing Volcano.
I went up with my son 13 on 1 occasion and just my wife and I on the second.
Each time I hit the top I was blown away by the views and of both the volcano and the surround views of the island. It is windy on the top so beware but don't let that put you off It's a great place to visit if you can. You don't see this sort of thing every day.

The walk starts off a road north of Lajares (take a right to it from the roundabout with wall-enclosed football field beside it). The walk is 5-6km altogether, and the path is very good. It is worth going to the summit, AND walking all the way around the crater because in the afternoon the views looking north to the sea are lovely, with an assortment of craters visible. You don't need to be really fit to do this walk, but if you are unfit just take it slow.

NOTE - the ascent to the volcano is on the northeast side of the cone, up the volcanic-slab pathway, and it is NOT up the gravel path to the northwest of the peak. If you use the gravel path or the previous attempts of others beyond this then you are only going to cause erosion to this beautiful place. PLEASE respect nature.

At the viewpoint of the crater you will see loads of little squirrels - contrary to other comments on here, PLEASE do NOT feed these creatures either here or at any other point on the island as they are not native to the Canaries at all but originate from Morocco and are considered a pest on the Canaries. If you feed them then this means they will increase in numbers.

We walked up early one morning - good job as it's steep and it was bloody hot when we came back down. Kids seemed to enjoy it - well, there wasn't too much, "are we there yet?" going on.

This is a deep crater so it looks the part. Don't be tempted to go down into the caldera unless you know what you're doing!

Super walk out from Lajares. Look out for the ground squirrels that inhabit a retaining stone wall on the left hand side of the track. Steep pull up to the Caldera and you have a complete caldera. Many we have seen on Fuertaventura are incomplete. Good views from the viewing platform. On setting off down you can either turn right back to Lajares, left and follow the track through to Corralejo, good bus service No. 8. Or for the adventurous head straight on up & follow the ridges onto the Old Volcano overlooking Corralejo & then down. As with any walking on Fuertaventura take plenty of fluids.
