Be prepared.
You will drive through a few villages - don't be alarmed.
You will arrive at a pier and board a longboat. If the tide is out, you will be walking above mudflats, and probably crawling from boat to boat to get to the outside boat which can get away from the pier.
The longboat trip is a 5 minute trip - you can see The Black Crab from the pier.
When you arrive, you may be concerned when you see the rickety "restaurant', but don't despair.
You will be seated and drinks taken.
You will be introduced to the resident puff fish, shark - alll pets.
Then you will be asked what you would like to eat, then choose the victims from the nets you have already walked past.
Steamed, bbq'd, deep fried - all on offer.
The fresh vegies and salad were fantastic.
Loved, loved, loved the experience. Food was wonderful, the breeze kicking off the water was welcoming, the beer/drinks were cold.
Full flavour; great food.
Cost us approx AUS$30 per head - all food, all drinks.
We ate two whole fish, two whole lobsters, 16 king prawns, steamed rice, fried rice, vegetables, salads, sauces, drinks.
Go'on ... give it a go!!

I would never have heard about this restaurant or even been able to find it, if my friend hadn't taken me there, pleased they did. It was an unusual but fun experience and something very different to the usual tourist restaurant experience. Very cheap too.

Absolutely loved the long boat out to the restaurant, the creaky wooden boards and the live seafood that is fished out of the nets from underneath. Not cheap but worth every penny if youre looking for something different.

There are four floating seafood restaurants moored off Laem (Cape) Hin on Phuket's east coast. The Black Crab is the most recognisable to English speakers, and the one where you are more likely to find a cold beer, many locals are Muslim.

The staff were friendly and helpful, offering to split the fish we selected into two delicious dishes but it's the floating location that makes it a terrify and memorable experience.

I recently was on a trip to Phuket and was fortunate enough to find this little gem of a restaurant through local foreigners who regularly take advantage of it. The restaurant actually floats in the water off of a small island. Because of its location, the seafood is kept alive in its natural environment until it is prepared to be eaten. Since I was there for 3 weeks, I tried several dishes and was delighted with both the quality and price. To be honest, I grew up in Michigan so I have never really been a big fan of seafood. The Black Crab has changed me forever and I am extremely thankful to the people who steered me in the right direction to have these wonderful and affordable dining experiences.
