I'll keep this short but sweet. We chose Karon Beach area to avoid the sleaze of Patong since we had the kids and it was my 50th birthday. This was a good choice. On arrival we were met with the standard cold drink and face towel after flying in from Australia and transferring (using Tour East). We were a bit early for check in so had to kill some time. We were pretty fatigued but wandered down the hill & devoured a green curry with a beer (after all that airline food it was great).

Wandered back up the hill to find our bags had been already placed in our rooms. The rooms we booked were not available so they upgraded us for 2 nights (not Privileges Club) and chucked in four free dinners. In all honesty I don't think the Privileges Club is worth the extra dollars anyway. They are doing some renovations & upgrades, but that did not interfere with our holiday at all.

Pool was great. Breakfast was all you could eat of standard Western food which is great when you have picky kids (but after 7 days you are just looking for cereal). Most of the milk products are UHT due to the heat, so if you don't like UHT have something else as there is plenty to choose from. Ake is a great waiter and nothing is too much trouble. Dinner was much the same story with buffet selections and theme nights.

Free tuk tuk to the bottom of the hill where there is a taxi stand and it is across from the beach. Plenty of shops whether you walk south toward Kata or north where there are some nice roadside restaurants. Haggling was great fun. Free transport from the Resort to its sister resort in Patong daily, so you can shop, etc.

We booked some tours with Tour East. Very expensive when compared with the lady at Sea Smile agency at the bottom of the hill. She was great for discounted tours and also did laundry (ironed) for 80baht per kilo, with internet for the teenagers.

You can hire a 'cab' which is really a mini-bus at the taxi rank that can take you where ever you want, whenever you wish. Tommy took us in to Phuket Town to the two big shopping complexes and then to the night markets. Nice guy and good value.

Plenty of massage shops at the bottom of the hill, but the Health Spa at the Resort although more expensive, is very classy and left my wife and I floating after our 2 hour treatment.

The staff in general are great. Friendly and helpful. Learn a few key phrases for hello & thank you and you will never go astray. Thai staff are generally poorly paid, so a little tip that equates to a few bucks to us - means a lot to them and their families. Your generousity is repaid ten fold by great service.

I've seen a few criticisms of the Reception area. Sure language is a bit of a problem, but have a little patience. They try real hard and the odd korp koon krup makes things a lot easier. They don't have 'cakes' in Thailand but somehow, my wife managed to organise one - so anything is possible. Enjoy your holiday!

We booked 7 nights at Horizon Patong Beach Resort. When we arrived they wanted to upgrade us to Horizon Karon, we accepted their offer and stayed 3 nights in Horizon Karon. We stayed at the Privilege Club Wing. Our room was pool access, clean and beautiful. The pool was great. Beakfast was ok,it was rich but presentation was not so good. The steep hill to the hotel from the beach is a good exercise everyday after 6 pm.They have a tuk-tuk servise for the customers which ends at 6 pm.
The bad parts were; They have a rule, one key per room and it doesn't change! I begged the reseption to have a second key(we were 3 in the room) but nothing changed. When we were checking out we were charged 400 thb for 2 ordinary glasses which were not in the room. We told them that we broke one but we had no idea what happened to the other very valuable! glass but at the end we payed for 2 and departed from the hotel with dissapointment.

Stayed 15 nights (12-27'th of Dec, 2008) with 2 kids, aged 9 & 11 years. As we had requested, we got 2 rooms with a connecting door. No major problems at check in, during the stay or at the check out.

Staff very helpful, but did not allow our friends who were staying in another hotel, to visit us - rules, you know... Food in general good, good variety at breakfast etc. Specially the lunch prepared by the pool on daily basis was excellent and not too expensive.

Special thanks for the excellent pool bartender Bao!

Only problems encountered were the mouldy smell of the aircon in one of our rooms and the cleanliness of the lower pool water - apparently they had some technical problems with the pumps and filters and were trying to fix them.

Location of the hotel is excellent, peaceful and not in the middle of the hassle of the beach street. The hill to the hotel is not that steep and offers good daily exercise for everybody. All in all , good experience and we recommed this hotel warmly.

Having booked our holiday with a reputable travel agent, we arrived in Phuket with another family and after a 1 hour flight from the airport and a longer flight from Australia we arrived at Horizon Resort. After another 30 minutes of stalling we were informed that there was no room for us or the other family we were travelling with.
Not only was there no room available for our 2 families but another family was also sent away.

Promises of upgrades to their sister resort in Patong did not eventuate and we finally resorted to staying at a different resort in Patong. (This resort also took in 2 other families the following day from the Horizon).

The staff were unhelpful, didn't want to know us once we left the hotel, and were unable to give us explanations as to how no rooms were available even though we has booked one year in advance and through Qantas Holidays.

Advice - Do not book with Qantas Holidays as we are still waiting for compensation (4 months later) and they will not talk to us regarding the matter.

Stayed here for 7 days and booked multiple rooms for a family holiday and were upgraded to the "privilege" part of the resort which had it's own eating area and pool. Reception was ok, and and room decor is fine, clean and tidy. gym is ok.

The gripes:
- luke warm showers: unless you are in the shower before 9am forget having a hot shower.
- only 1 key per room: we requested and begged for 2 but apparently this isn't possible. I got back to the resort before my partner one evening and sat around for a couple of hours waiting for her before finally asking for reception to open our room. they did but i had no key, so no electricity! Even Formula-1 hotels give you a second card.
- happy hour at midday: we like to go out during the day and come back in the afternoon for happy hour. happy hour is between 12 and 2pm, however a couple was bluntly refused drinks when they arrived at 1:30pm.
- breakfast is very poor: scrambled eggs, bacon and other hot foods unedible. other foods available such as cereal, fruit, toast and omelettes ok.
- not enough sun beds: hotel only partly filled but we had to share sunbeds at the privilege pool, very annoying.
- don't break anything: you'll promptly be handed an invoice charging you for the item. We broke a drinking glass by accident and found out.
- don't lose your plastic key: you'll promptly be handed an invoice charging you for the item. Never had a hotel do this before.

other stuff:
- frosted sliding glass panels between bathroom and beds: if the panels aren't adjusted correctly or moved by the cleaner or by accident you could be sharing your most intimate moments with everybody in the room. and if the light is on in the bathroom a very distinct silhouette is visible. fine for a couple, awkward for a family.
- accessibility: there are lots and lots and lots of steps to be walked to get around the hotel. be aware if you are mobility challenged as a member of our group found out.

We stayed at the Horizon Karon beach resort for 10 nights on our honeymoon.
The hotel was great and the staff was very friendly! We stayed in the Privilege Club Wing in a delux room. It's really worth staying on that side, it's not noisy at all and the Privilege pool is awesome! I would suggest getting a pool access room if you can afford it though, it's not as private, but if you like being around the pool for most of the day then it's perfect!
The hotel also has a bus that does numerous trips to patong and back everyday, this was a great place to make new friends and was also very convenient.
The breakfast at the hotel was very good and had a large selection of food. We found that the hotel food was expensive so we rather had dinner in Karon every night. For lunch we made use of the Privilege club lounge where they served snacks and drinks on the house, this was more than enough after a big american breakfast.

Overall I would definitely stay there again if I return to Thailand!

Extremely disappointed will never stay there again.

The resort was nice but the service was absolutely terrible.

We arrived about 5pm, no one came out to help with our bags because the concierge was asleep at the desk.

We were rushed through check in we had to skull our complementary cocktails. Then we were taken to our room, not through the pretty resort but in a tuk tuk past all the hotel rubbish and dirty washing - clearly not worried about first impressions.

Even though breakfast is supposed to finish at 10.30am they start packing it all up at 10am.

Also very IMPORTANT - the "complimentary" water in your room, do not take the glass bottles out as you will be charged it is not entirely complimentary.
