“Very dissappointed with the front desk hotel staff”
Reviewed October 7, 2008

It was my 50th and our 4 family groups went to the Horizon Karon Beach. Due to overbooking, one family group were "upgraded" to the Privilege Club. We went for a look and were physically escorted out by security staff and told by front desk staff that we were forbidden to enter again - great start! Now the upgrade excluded free drinks, newspaper etc so it was just a room change anyway and wasn't much better than ours. (try the Patra Bali for a real upgraded room). Someone broke a standard glass in their room - $6 thankyou. When leaving I asked the reception to call our transport, as it was late to get us back to the airport - $1 please and they didn't even try to wait for an answer before claiming no one answered and couldn't offer any further assistance. This was typical (and ongoing) poor customer service from what should have been a focussed effort to serve their guests. The front staff including the duty manager who I spoke with several times were horrible, rude and presented poorly and were in stark contrast with the rest of the hotel staff. This was a common theme shared amongst any guests that had dealings with them. The catering and hospitality staff were fantastic and could not do more for you - thanks Ake. Food was great and we enjoyed all free breakfasts and half our stay had evening meals included as well. Rooms were clean, everything worked well but I have no idea why they call them sea view rooms - what a joke and don't waste your money paying more as I beleive room allocation is random and not based on what you paid for. The hotel didn't even acknowledge my birthday so my sisters organised a $15 cake from the kitchen staff. We stayed at the Patra Bali last year and the couple we were with received two birthday cakes and a bunch of flowers for their respective birthdays and wedding anniversary - now that is service beyond expectations. The Horizon was the absolute opposite. As a cheap holiday, the package was cheap (av $100/night each including airfare/acc & most meals) so that is good value. Thanks to www.ineedaholiday.com.au. I am sorry it was let down by some penny pinching arrogant front desk staff. I would recommend looking at other hotels in the same area such as the Absolute or the Horizon Beach (both great locations) as Thailand is cheap at the moment.

  • Liked — My room was large with one king bed & comfortable sofa. Other family rooms in block 1 were smaller even though they paid for (lack of) sea views
  • Disliked — The front desk staff and duty management were rude. The hotel penny piches & charges for losing a towel or breaking a glass - they provide the prices in their room literature so it must be common.

My husband and I just spent 8 fantastic days staying at Horizon Karon Beach and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had booked into the Priviledge Pool Access Room and we are so pleased we did. It was our wedding anniversary and when we arrived at our room there were orchids in the shape of a heart on the bed, as well as a lovely bunch of roses of the coffee table and fruit platter. We were thrilled to say the least.

We stayed in Room 4102, and it was great to walk straight out of the sliding doors into the pool. Thanks to the Barmen in the Pool Bar for their service and friendliness. Everyone at the Hotel was so helpful. When we arrived after such a long wait at Bangkok Airport we were greeted with fresh towels and juice.

The Priviledge Bar was also very nice. Free drinks and snacks between 12.00p.m. and 2.00p.m. The staff there were also very nice. Beer is not free, but spirits were, so gin became very popular!!

The Hill!! Yes there is a hill but it is not too difficult, though with the humidity it can be tiring. You can always catch the free Tuk Tuk which we did after a while. There is also a free bus into Patong a few times a day. We found shopping at the Karon Markets just as good as Patong.

The only problem we found was the stairs!! You have to go up two flights of stairs for breakfast each morning, and being in the Pool Access Room we also had to go up two flights of stairs to the foyer. Good exercise though!!

All in all, we had a great holiday and thank you Horizon for making our holiday so special.

My husband and I stayed at the Horizon Karon Beach Resort in September for 11 nights. This was our 5th time in Phuket having previously stayed at the Merlin Beach Resort, Diamond Cottage, Amari and in Feb this year, the Banthai. As we were right in the heart of Patong with Banthai, we thought we would stay out of it this time. The Horizon is a true 15 minute drive by car but the hotel has a shuttle in and out of Patong from memory 9am, 1pm 6pm and 9pm into Patong and 11am, 3pm, 5pm, 8pm and 11.30pm back to Karon.

The hotel is situation in lush tropical grounds and yes, the hill is quite steep when walking up (if you don't catch the tuk tuk that is available between 9am and 6pm). I didn't mind the extra exercise but elderly and young children would find it a stuggle.

We stayed in a Club Wing which is for over 18's, although there were a few teenagers with their parents but certainly no young kids around. We had a Pool Access room and it was great, the best room we have ever had in Thailand. Large, approx. 72 sq. mtrs with lounge, king bed, big plasma TV in the wall, and a large bathroom with good size shower and great size bath. There was also a larger than usual fridge, not your usual size mini bar which was great for all our beers, juices, water etc., (we buy our own and take out the hotel's drinks). There was also little extras like a beer bottle opener on the wall and a plug converter in your room. The deck with two sun loungers was very private and we could step down straight into the pool. We had room 4106 which was probably the best location as there were no sun lounges on the opposite side of the pool looking into your room. The room was well maintained, beautiful flooring, and was cleaned very well each day, with your usual orchids on the pillows, oh and a welcome fruit platter to greet us when we arrived.

The breakfast is over in another building and yes there are a few steps to climb to get there but it helps to keep the weight down. It is open with lovely views all round and fans to help cool down. The staff at breakfast were fantastic, so friendly and happy - what a great way to start the day. The breakfast had the usual - cereals, yoghurts, hot food both asian and english, egg station, salad and fruit but was not as good as some, having been spoilt at the Amari Coral and Amari Palm Reef in Samui which are the best I've ever experienced.

We had room service once or twice and it was expensive for Thailand and although we had 5 free buffets dinners, we only ate one night which was a Asian Fare night and the food was quite good. There are plenty of restaurants around Kata and Karon at cheap prices with good food. The little restaurant at the bottom of the hill on the beach served the best Tom Yung Goong ever!

The gym is open from 6am to 8am and is more than adequate - 2 treadmills, 1 cross trainer, rower, 2 bikes and various weights.

We only used the Privilege Lounge for free drinks and snacks once as it was from 12 noon till 2pm. Not a very good time. They have a good library of books which saved me as I read my 2 in 3 days.

We couldn't get a late check out as they were full, but we were allowed to use the communal showers in the Club Wing and also the Lounge if you wanted to until departure.

Overall, our stay at the Horizon was very good. Would I stay there again, absolutely, but only in the Club Wing with a pool access - for us, that was what made our holiday so memorable, along with the lovely staff at breakfast.

Now before I begin this review may I ask readers to keep in mind how much you will be paying for this resort (not much by Australian standards that's for sure !) so with this in mind, let's begin. We travelled from Brisbane with two other families comprising of 8 kids (between 4-12) and 6 adults between us so quite a tribe and our overall view was the same, the resort was better than we expected based on webbsite photos and other reviews.

We arrived late afternoon and were greeted with cool towels and a drink. There was some confusion with the room type, we requested interconnecting rms but these were not available at check in, so had to spend two nights seperated but not really a big deal in the scheme of things and the hotel staff compensated by throwing in some freebies.

All the rms were clean and fresh, no odours as others have reported and the air con was great ! Fresh drinking was supplied daily and rms tided and beds made.

Breakfast was excellent, wished we could have eaten more, plenty of variety and while the selection did not change much day to day there was so much to choose from it didn't matter.

Staff were lovely and so kind to our kids, each morning they would greet them and have a little joke with them (same staff worked the kids club) which made them feel very special.

Bar prices were a little high (not compared to Australia though) but the staff did not mind if you bought your own from the local minimarket ($1 per beer) and drank it by the pool.

Yes there was a hill to and from the Hotel but there was a free tuk tuk for our convenience. The shopping in Karon was far better than expected (not as good as Patong of course) but still able to grab a bargin. The thai people our beautiful and as long as you barter with a smile they are happy to accommodate.

An absolute must if you have kids is the Dino Park for dinner, mini golf or just a drink. This place is unlike anything we had seen before, just amazing and the nightly visit from the baby.
elephant was fabulous.

The resort is well keep and quite beautiful, sooo much better than the internet photos! We loved it and would definiately return, absolute value for money !!!!

TIP: Would book direct with hotel rather than through an agent ( would be even cheaper) and definiately do not allow agents to arrange transfers, they wanted to charge $60 for 10 minute mini bus ride that actually cost $15 so keep this in mind!!!!!!

  • Liked — good sized rms, never felt crowded
  • Disliked — only allowing 3 people to a rm when they 2 double beds

I had just spent most of the year away at work, as had my partner, so we decided a really good holiday was in order over the new year. This hotel certainly delivered.

We stayed in the club lounge area - and the rooms were spotless, huge, comfortable, and overlooking a great view. It looked like it had either just been refurbished or was infact brand new.

It is up a little hill (so no tsunami damage) but there is a free taxi up and down if you don't want to do the 150m walk down/up to the beach.

If you have the option, go the club lounge one - its actually a different entire wing of the hotel, and no kids! Just huge rooms, great pool with side bar, and free drinks in the business lounge upstairs during happy hour!

Breakfast in this place was also fantastic, huge selection of great food!

  • Liked — The fact that the club section was a different wing - no kids screaming in rooms or the pool!
  • Disliked — Being told not to book things through the door man. I still did though - cheaper and he

My fiance and I stayed here for 14 nights in April 2007. We were first time overseas travellers so didn't really know what to expect but we both absolutely loved it. It's in a great location - close enough to Patong if you want to go for a beer or do some shopping but far enough away from all the noise if you want a quiet night in with someone special. Breakfast was awesome with both asian and western style meals, nice coffee and good service. All staff eager to help. Had great deals on tours - do not book tours through your travel agent! Pool and pool bar is definitely a highlight and even though the prices are heavy its still worthwhile. We would both definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

Ourselves and our friends (another couple) stayed there recently and had a great time. The only problem was no rooms on arrival, they asked if we would agree to being accomodated at the sister Horizon at Patong for two nights until a room became available. We were hot, tired and thirsty and still in our cool climate clothes having flown overnight from Brisbane so as all was out of our hands we agreed. Patong was close to everything so that was good. Our friends had a huge room with a balcony away from everything whilst we had a small room on the ground floor on a thoroughfare, it was ok but extremely noisy but was all worth it though as when we went back to Karon 2 days later we missed the bustle of Patong but were upgraded for our troubles to the Privilage club section of the resort. Not much view but a beautiful double room and access to the pool etc (no kids) no offence to anyone with kids , we have 4 boys of our own but it was nice to float about and sunbake without splashing and screaming. The staff were very helpful until our last night when we forgot to sign for the drinks we had with our meals,we were called in our rooms almost to the point of harrassment. We said just to transfer costs over to our checkout bill in the morning because we were buggered if we were going back that evening. Yes the hill was a killer but it worked off all the buffet breaky we ate. Would I go back again? Yep, i a heartbeat

  • Liked — cleanliness, elevator, aircon, privilage club library and dvd hire, buffet breakfast and dinner
  • Disliked — no toilets near pool, people put their towels on sun lounges early in morning and came back to them later,2nd last day they brought more sun lounges out but it wasnt enough
