Since it was my first time to go Phuket, me and partner decided to stay in Patong for 2 nights and Karon for another 2. I personally did not enjoy Patong so much because it was crowded and noisy. When we arrived at Horizon Karon from a hotel in Patong at around 2PM, it was paradise. Quiet and relaxing.
We were pleased that they upgraded our Deluxe room to a Privilege Club Superior (Pool Access) room. Meaning, we get free food around noon to 2 PM daily, free drinks until 6 PM (daily), and free WIFI The bathroom was big and clean, the bed was comfortable and the room was huge. The 24 hr room service was pretty quick, our food was delivered within 20 minute considering we order food in the wee hours of the day. They also have a couple of food choices for the breakfast buffet. Hopefully they should have more fruit variety.
We had access to the pool, but didn't go for a swim because it was a bit dirty. The Jacuzzi was not getting warm and informed the staff about it. So, we went to the hotel spa for a steam bath, Jacuzzi and massage. We paid 1,090 Thb (around 45 SGD). Not bad for a 55 min oil massage and 20 minutes steam bath and Jacuzzi. The massage was relaxing and I would go for the 2 hour next visit.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. The Guest Relation Officer girl and the trainee, Irish and Rishna were super nice. They were professional and friendly, always smiles on their faces.

We will definitely stay at Horizon Karon hotel again one day.

The tagline on the hotel keycard stated, "Affordable Luxury", unfortunately, based on my recent stay there, it just does not feel very luxurious to me.

The grounds of the hotel are nice, however, the rooms are basic. The room (Superior Pool View) was relatively spacious and appeared clean, with a refrigerator, LCD TV, and DVD player. The walls were either paper-thin, or we had loud neighbours, as we could hear everything they said when they were in their own room.

The wardrobes had a musty smell, but appeared relatively clean. There were a few flying insects, and 1 millipede in the bathroom.

The hotel is located on top of a hill, so be prepared to trek up and down the hill to reach the beach, shops, and massage places. The hotel does seem to provide a tuk tuk service to/from the beach, unfortunately, we were not briefed on the drop off/pick up location, so never made use of the service.

The hotel also provides a shuttle service to their sister property in Patong Beach, just note that the schedules are not extremely regular, so you would either need to wait for some time over in Patong, or just take a tuk tuk back to Karon, expect to pay around THB400 for the one way tuk tuk trip from Patong to Karon.

Breakfast at the resort is a typical Thai hotel buffet breakfast with the usual egg station, cooked food (both western food and local food). There is usually a small selection of Indian food as well.

There is a great banana pancake stall just at the foot of the hill. The vendor comes around 6pm, and leaves at around 2am. He claims to have been selling banana pancakes for 20+ years, of which 10 years have been spent in Karon itself.

I also have to mention that the front office staff were very friendly and welcoming.

We saw this as an option in the brochure but by booking directly with the hotel, we obtained a family package which included dinner and breakfast, discounts on drinks and massage, and a free elephant ride safari for the kids. They also picked us up and dropped off at the airport.
The hotel is up the hill from the beach which makes it quieter, and the grounds are very well kept.
Breakfast choice was huge. The set menu for dinner was good and is a choice of Thai or European. The latter included steak a lot but the twice weekly buffet is very good.
The best feature of all is the very helpful staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.
Some reviews whinge about the walk up the hill but it's really not that long.
We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back to this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have no stairs (no lift) but upper floors have better views

We arrived early hours of the morning to be greeted by friendly staff. We have a family of 5 and had 2 adjoining rooms overlooking crystal clear luxury pool. Staff were lovely, rooms were spacious and cleaned regularly. Lovely breakfast included with a variety of food. Grounds were neat and tidy. Kids loved it. There was a handy mini mart in the resort area that sold some simple yet useful items and foods/drinks. The gym was also very convenient and went to good use. There was a short stroll down to the beautiful beach and shops. Make sure you sample the banana pancakes at the bottom of the hill! Hope to go back one day, this holiday resort is highly recommended as we didn't experience any problems during our 10 day stay.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the pool and ground level have easy/close access to everywhere, are quiet and a...

We arrived at the Horizon at 1am and stayed in a Pool Access room, upon entering the room we noticed a very strong musty odour and the air conditioning vent in the ceiling had been removed. We called down to reception and they sent someone up to fix the ceiling vent. The air con turned itself off at approx 3am everynight - which meant you to had manually turn it back on .. we advised management 3 times about this during our stay .. despite being looked at it occurred every night without fail. The musty odour in the room never seemed to go away (the hotel had in room aromatherapy burners .. maybe this is a reoccurring problem?) - but after awhile you tended not to notice it as much. The room itself is very spacious and has a great sized fridge which we stocked daily with drinks from the minimart at the bottom of the hill. However the bathroom is in need of renovation .. paint is chipping off the walls, tiles were loose in the shower and there was mould in the shower, it seems to be a reoccurring theme in Thailand however. Pool towels were threadbare .. so much so that while towelling off my finger went through the towel creating a hole!
When we did watch TV the signal would drop out a lot and the picture was very pixelated.

The Resort has built a maintenance shed which backs on to the priviledge pool and rooms and all through the day construction noises come from the shed .. which in our opinion is pretty poor considering club wing guests are paying top dollar to stay there! We approached management about this as well - however hotel staff couldn't seem to understand why we were unhappy with this!

We used the gym while we were there .. again okay but nothing to get excited about, the hotel advises the gym is air conditioned .. however it didn't work and some of the equipment was looking pretty tired, but they supplied towels and filtered drinking water which was good.

The adults pool area could be great, however like most things at the Horizon there seems to be no upkeep. We had a open power point outside our room ... I'm pretty sure electricity and water don't mix! The pool constantly had leaves and branches in it .. even early morning I did not once see anyone cleaning the pool. The pool access rooms have 2 recliners and a table with umbrella but they are in need of replacement .. the recliners for other guests have been replaced .. so hopefully they room ones will be replaced soon. The pool itself had a grimy substance on the tiles .. again we never saw anyone cleaning it.

We didn't visit the resort spa but other guests we had met really enjoyed their experience there. On our second day we found a massage shop under the Stadium at the bottom of the hill called U2 Massage .. wow, heaven! Lovely ladies who were so gentle and kind .. it worked out at $13AUD for an hour massage .. which was fantastic ... we did a lot of walking while there and their foot massage was AMAZING!

We had the buffet breakfast daily at the resort, the egg station was fantastic and the variety of foods on offer was pretty good, however I was disappointed that more tropical fruits were not on offer. We did have some snacks at the swim up bar which were okay ... nothing amazing however.

The resort does have a Tuk Tuk service which runs during the day until 8pm to bring guests back up the hill .. which is great however they really need to extend the hours until 10pm so guests that have been out in Karon for dinner can use it on their return ... however maybe this is the resorts way of trying to keep guests there for dinner. We ate most nights at one of the resturants located a short walk from the resort nearby to the stadium - Song Pong Mala .. very friendly and great service. The food was fantastic! Prices were very good and most nights we were eating 3-4 dishes with a large beer for $18AUD.

While there I would recommend going to the Big Buddha - fantastic views out across Karon and Kata beach - good fun in a Tuk Tuk as well.

We did visit Patong a few times - we used the free hotel shuttle which was excellent - you do need to book ahead however and make sure when you arrive at the Horizon Patong you book your return trip as spots fill up fast. In saying that if you do need to pay for a tuk tuk to get back its about 400THB .. which is pretty reasonable. We found ourselves haggling over 50THB and then realised we were standing there arguing over $3AUD ... you do get caught up in the haggling sometimes!

When we checked out we also had some discrepencies on our bill .. which we tried to discuss with the check out staff and got no where. I did request to speak to the Hotel Manager and they advised the manager was unavailable and no other management was available. The amount in question was $50AUD .. there were codes on the bill that even the check out staff didn't understand! The check out staff spent 30mins attempting to look up the codes, during which time we sat and waited in the lobby. After 30mins I went back to reception and gave my room number to which one of the check out staff replied in a very snarky tone "Oh yes ... everyone here knows your room number" ... both my partner and I were speechless! In hindsight maybe staff aren't used to people checking their accounts, but we travel quite a bit and always go through the final bill. I was surprised that no management was on that day and at that time (we checked out at 9am) however after not getting anywhere with the check out staff we simply paid the charges. It did leave a sour taste in my mouth and did not endear us to return to the resort or encourage friends or family to stay there either.

Would we stay at the Horizon again? Probably not - we have stayed there twice now in 5 years and have to say the resort facilities are very much in need of a revamp and the positioning of the maintenance shed next to the highest paying rooms does not make for a relaxing enjoyable pool experience .. I would rather the sound of kids splashing and screaming than constant sawing / drilling and hammering. They advertise as being affordable luxury .. which in our opinion it defintately is not .. but again that is our opinion. The check out experience also left us a little dumbfounded ... the staff there are generally great but they don't seem to be able to handle things when they go slightly wrong ... its a Madagascar Movie style they employ ... "Smile and wave". No one likes confrontation but I do expect to get what I pay for and the Horizon didn't deliver this for us, our best advice is to pay as you go ... don't charge things to your room.

It should be clear that if you can't or don't like walking in stairs or mind steep hills this is not the hotel for you. Personally I find it quite charming and think the high location gives an extra sense of security. The hotel is situated a couple of hundred meters from the beach and the restaurants around the corner are excellent. The room we had was nice and kept clean, a small minus for no working lock to the toilet. The staff were over all friendly and they supplied a good and varied breakfast. The only major complaint I have is the internet connection: We were supposed to have an internet connection in our room, and this is telepathically true, however the connection was so slow that it was unable to open any webpage.

This was the first hotel we stayed at in Karon in January 2008, for 2 weeks. We also stayed there for 2 weeks in 2009. I loved to walk into the pool just from our very big and nice room. Lovely to stay at the adult part of the hotel.Breakfast was amazing. Good exercise to walk from hotel to beach, even they also had a tuk-tuk to bring you, if you wanted . Very nice staff.
