“Brilliant holiday”
Reviewed January 2, 2008

We had the most enjoyable 7 nights at the Horizon Karon , we had a room in the Priviledge Section which is a pass controlled area of the resort by your room key. It has its own swimming pool ,air conditioned priviledge members lounge with internet access and complimentary food and drinks, large rooms with double bath and shower and extra facilities and is certainly worth the upgrade from the standard rooms.
The resort is very quiet , it never seems crowded , although during our stay over Christmas they told us the resort was full. The resort is at the top of a fairly steep hill , but the hotel offer a free tuk-tuk service from 8am-6pm up and down the hill , we walked back most nights and it was not really a problem.
The hotel has three restaurants , serving Thai , Indian and Western Food , we used all three and the food was excellent , but sometimes these restaurants were empty , which we could not understand , it was a shame as it lacked atmosphere some nights.
The staff could not be more helpful , most speaking good english and all adding to our wonderful holiday.
We would return without hesitation.

They purposely overbook this hotel to fill their Duanjiit hotel in Patong! (and its not completed so all you hear is construction noises and pollution!)

I will try not to be negative but it’s hard as they recked our honeymoon!

I emailed them about an upgrade to the Privilege Club (I just heard about it from a friend two weeks prior to tip) - no response. I then asked Escape Travel (travel agent) who asked and were informed there was no space there. Oh well.

Two days before we arrived I emailed from KL to see if there happened to be any places in the Privilege Club (no reply).

We were greeted nicely, we gave them our credit card, and we had a drink and a cold cloth. Only after that they told us they had overbooked and they were shipping us out to another hotel at Patong Beach! What choice did we have? I was so upset and they did not care, they thought nothing of it and that what they were doing is fine and why would we complain.

We complained to our travel agent and luckily got moved back the next day instead of the three days they said. So they said they were totally booked so how did we get to go back? I think it is impolite to lie to people.

Only when we kept complaining we got 2 Thai massages and 2 Dinners (watch out for the dinners as they are a set dinners and not very nice and we chose not to use them as did the other people that they shifted on the same day as us). Massages great!

Each day when we walked through reception we saw upset people being moved to Patong so they do this often.

We checked the web 4 days after to see if the hotel had availability and they still did so they lied when they said it was an IT glitch.

Two guests that were moved when we were said they were upgraded to the Privilege Club as compensation and we weren't so we asked at reception and were told no - unless we paid and in the end we did pay and we got three nights in the Privilege Club which was very nice - but they said that was booked up also - very interesting.

The swim up bar was closed for construction also - it was laughable at that stage as I told the trave agent that I want to stay at a nice place but the most important thing is to have a swim up bar - go figure! They started construction when we were eating our lunch near the pool!

Normally I would say don't worry about it as you are not at the hotel for long apart from sleeping! We chose a resort on purpose to stay at it most of the time.

So my advice:
Be prepared to move when you get there and try not to let it get you down. Given that our travel agent contacted then two weeks before we arrived and they hadn’t told the travel agent of the overbooking problems I expect its no use to choose the hotel and call before hand.

You can't drink their mini bar items and replace them - they stamp their stuff and will charge you.

They don't speak English very well at all so very hard to communicate – especially when you are having problems.

Stay at another place - there are much better ones there.

They have a free Tuk Tuk up the hill also you just need to use the phone from the bottom. (It’s not that hard to walk up it unless you are carrying heaps of shopping and you are pooped.)

Take some good wine or champagne from home as its very hard to find in Phuket.

The other hotel didn't have a DVD player.

Don't bother paying extra for a see view - the palm trees are too high to see anyway.

There are no lifts.

Sorry if that was long.

We spent 2 wonderful weeks of our honeymoon in this hotel. After spending almost 24hrs on the way... in airports and on planes, the warm welcome, cold towel, and friendly smiles gave us a boost of energy.
The services were great, the stuff very polite, friendly, helpful, always staying close enough to you to be at your service, if needed, but not too close to disturb.... we just loved them!!
We got a room in the Privilege Club area.... a very nice area with nice rooms, private pool, a sea view cafe and a lounge where they serve free drinks and snacks, you can rent DVDs for free, read books and magazines.
It was a wonderful experience, the next time we'll go to Phuket, we'll definitely try to stay in this hotel!

We (myself, husband and 11 year old son) arrived at the Horizon Karon after an uneventful flight in the early evening. The reception staff were lovely, spoke reasonable english and gave us a welcome drink and cold towels.
We had booked for 2 interconnecting pool facing rooms, but had been prewarned that there was some difficulty in securing interconnecting rooms. So it was no great surprise that on checking in we were told there was no interconnecting rooms but there would be by the next day. We really weren't bothered by that, and our son just slept on the day bed that night. I do have to mention that in this room the smell of mould was overpowering. If we hadn't been moving the next day, I would have made a complaint.
The next day, we were settled into our interconnecting rooms (no mould smell!) on the first floor overlooking the gardens and pool. Our rooms were lovely, in our room we had a massive king bed, and in our sons room, he had 2 queen beds. The rooms were a good size and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was a decent size, the only problem was due to the shower being in the bath, water would go all over the floor. Definately not a big issue.
There was also a large balcony, that was great to have drinks on.

People have made mention of the steps and "the hill". We didn't find the steps around the hotel an issue at all - I didn't really think that there were that many. I agree that the hill was a little steep on the way up and if you were elderly, or had very small children they might not enjoy it, but for us it was a few minutes excercise to try and burn off all the food and cocktails. We never felt the need to use the hotel tuk tuk to go up or down.
Was in a really good area. The beach (Karon) was directly at the bottom of the hill and was clean and not over run with beach chairs. Plenty of good places to eat nearby and a number of mini marts within 5 minutes walk.

The pool area was clean with a swim up bar and we managed to find a lounge when we wanted it. Breakfast was good with the usual fresh fruit, cereals, egg station and a selection of hot dishes.
I have to say that the thing that was outstanding at this resort was the friendliness of the staff. At breakfast you always got a great big good morning and goodbye. They were always ready to have a chat and I watched the girls making a fuss of all the little children and babies. Everyone we dealt with was lovely.

Would we stay here again? Absolutely!! We are planning on going back next October.

This place is great, perfect spot if you are after quiteness and want a beautiful resort as well. We stayed for 2 weeks after a week in Bangkok and it was just the perfect solution to relax after Bangkok. There was myself and husband and our 3 children 5,10,12. My sister and her new husband and our single male friend.
The stairs: Were not really a worry, young children might get sick of them after a few days. I really did imagine that there would be more stairs though from reading previous reports on the Horizon. We did have a bottom floor room so no stairs to climb every time we needed to go to our room. There are stairs leading up to the breakfast and night time buffet dining area, leading up to the foyer, leading up or down to the 2 pools and leading into the building accommodation blocks.
The Hill: Tough first time up it but did get easier. Great way to keep the kilos off after a big meal. I would walk it if there was only me and the elder two children but the youngest found it tough so we'd get the tuk tuk. The Horizon does have a tuk tuk that will take you up and down the hill between 9am and 6pm but I got the feeling this would annoy the tuk tuk boys abit. You could tell when one was not happy, he'd take off that quick and fly down the hill you'd swear you'd fly across the road and end up in the ocean. We had a favourite, chubbier then the rest and always had a smile, so we tipped him on our last day and got a hug goodbye from him.
The rooms: Beautiful rooms, 2 queen sized beds and a lounge. Fridge full of drinks, which we took out and filled with drinks from the 7/11. We got 4 bottles of water every day for free from the maids when they cleaned the room. Room was beautifully cleaned every day, but the replacement of coffee, sugar and the powdered milk sachets were a bit hit and miss. Sometimes we'd get 4 sachets of coffee, no sugar and 1 sachet of milk powder. If you like real milk in your coffee you'll have to buy it from the 7/11. The room did not have a clothes rack dryer that I could see on other peoples balconies so we rung reception for one and a staff member turned up with a cheese burger. So the next day we asked the maids and they thought we wanted a doctor. In the end we gave up but it was only a minor thing. Dvd player in our room to check all our dvd purchases.
Staff: The staff especially the wait staff were so nice, they loved the children, always a cuddle waiting for them at breakfast, a pleasent good morning and have a great day. Security were always looking out for you, sitting in the entrance to each accommodation block, if I was by myself at night they'd walk me to our room. Everyone was so friendly and nearly all will remember you.
Pools: 2 pools. Beautiful and clean. Spent most of the time in the bottom pool, swim up pool bar which you can order lunch, drinks, ice creams etc. Probably need more sun loungers but we never found it hard to get 4 of them, but then the weather was not that great either so not as many people around the pools.
Food: Breakfast was very nice, with a wide selection of food to choose from. No vegemite for us Aussies but they had jams and marmalade. Eggs cooked however you wanted, bacon, fresh fruit, yogurt, pancakes, muffins, juices the list goes on. We also had 5 buffet dinners for free, I didn't like it very much neither did the children but my husband and the others thought it was alright. We only used it twice and ate else where down the street.
Don't get the resort to order a taxi for you, go down to the bottom of the hill to the taxi and tuk tuk service, very nice guys. We did use the free Horizon bus to go into Patong a few times, never came home on it though, we'd get a tuk tuk for about 300 baht.
Our laundry was done a few times from the girls at the first massage place down the bottom of the hill on the right. Terrific ladies, had plenty of "foot massage" done here, they loved the kids, we nearly all had a foot massage here every day. They gave my daughter a manicure and pedicure and painted little flowers on the finger and toe nails. Looks beautiful.
Would definately stay here again as everything is close by but with out the hustle and bustle, perfect place to stay with children.

We were a little disappointed with this hotel's service even before we arrived. We tried to book a room in the Privilege Club area but I received no reply to 3 separate emails; so I finally had to settle for a standard room which could be booked over the internet.

The greeting we received on arrival was lovely, and the hotel room was also very nice. The pool area was spacious and clean. Breakfast was good, with lots of choices.

It was when we asked for services that were a little unusual that the service began to wane. Our plane was delayed for a night so I requested a letter stating that we didn't check in until the next day for insurance purposes; well that seemed a little too much for front reception and they flatly refused my request.

Housekeeping was fine until the final day when they took a small amount of money that was left on the bedside table - housekeeping thought it was a tip!

The location was good - away from noisy Patong and the beach and great restaurants are just down the road. However be prepared for the steep hike from the beach back to the hotel (there is a tuk tuk provided by the hotel, but it only runs until 6pm) and the hundreds of very slippery stairs around the hotel's ground.

It is an okay hotel, but for hundreds of other hotel options nearby don't settle for the Horizon. I suggest you stay else where.

The hotel itself is large enough to have all the amenities yet small enough to be approachable and friendly. The hotel is up a hill but there is a free Tuk Tuk but it does finish at 6.00pm, after a day we found it easier to just walk up and down the hill, it is only a little hill.
The Hotel is the end of the road so there is no traffic noise. We found the staff to be very friendly, the rooms well kept, overall we were very happy with this hotel.

The hotel food was good, slightly more expensive than at some of the basic restaurants in Kata and Karon but when you are reading that book beside the pool it is convenient, the Indian restaurant at the hotel was fantastic, very tasty food.

The hotel is in Southern Karon, closer to Kata than Karon and that was a pleasant mistake on our part. Quieter but with everything we needed. The only thing we couldn't get was a late checkout, our plane was not until late that night so we ended up paying a day rate at another hotel close by.

Down the hill to the left
Kata is just down the hill to the left, you will find enough shops, restaurants including pharmacy and mini marts to ensure that you don’t have to leave the area if you don’t want to. The Dino Bar is a bit different with its prehistoric theme, the food is good.

Down the hill to the right
Massage places are all along here, they are more modest than the hotel spa but we found them to be as professional and half the price. The first massage shop at the bottom of the hill is an agent for the local laundry, very cheap wash and iron.

About 100m further down is a set of five fairly ordinary looking restaurants, the décor maybe basic but the food was pretty fresh and very cheap. We ate here many times.

It is a about 100 baht taxi to Karon which has more shops and restaurants. The hotel runs a free shuttle to Patong and it is about 300-400 baht taxi ride to Phuket Town.
