We travelled with two young children, and another family. I must say that the reception staff are pretty disappointing. It took so long for us to check in, that the restaurants and room service had closed for the evening, and after having our flights delayed - by the way don't fly Thai if you can help it - by 9 hours, and no food or refeshment provided by the airline, we were pretty angry, tired and hungry. I asked for help, but the reception staff just shrugged their shoulders and could not care less! Not a very impressive way to start a holiday! The breakfast was only just ok. Lots of greasy options, some fresh fruits, and the usual danish selection. We would highly recommend eating at the little pub across the road from this resort, Angus O'Tooles. Good prices, great food, and nice cold beer.

We stayed at Centara Karon Resort from Christmas to New Year's with our three very young childrens, one teenager, and our extended family. A total of 13 people, and we booked five rooms. It was not cheap, but as soon as we arrived, i understood that it was a budget hotel -- just from walking into the foyer.

I was so disappointed when we walked into our rooms. We stayed at Lagoon deluxe rooms. There was nothing deluxe about the rooms. It was very basic and the bathrooms were just horrid. The water we had to wash in had a yellow tinge to it. I felt that the rooms weren't very clean. I complained about it and we were moved to another room. It was slightly better, but because the hotel is so old, it is just plain dirty and not maintained very well.

The babysitter we booked for the first night did not show up. The second night she did not show up either. We had to call and complain and after we really complained, the front desk sent one of their own.

The pool did not offer towels until 10am. By 5pm, they are out of towels.

At breakfast, it took a lot of effort to get a cup of tea. I felt that the service level was just terrible. Also, the hotel food was terrible.

This was our fourth trip to Phuket. We had stayed in Holiday Inn Busakorn Inn and Dusit in Laguna before. It was quite a step down from those two hotels. I would never stay at Centara Karon Resort Phuket again. I would not recommend people and families looking for a beautiful holiday to stay there. Try HOliday Inn Busakorn Wing or Dusit in Laguna instead.

My partner and I both 28 just returned from the Centara Karon. After our stay at Bangkok it was a welcome site to see sun, sea and sand.
We arrived at the Centara at around 13:00our transfer was a private taxi so we were the only drop and it took around 45/50 minutes to reach the Centara and we were greeted with a juice and cool towel and then checked into the room. We had paid for superior sea view in the terraces and when we went into the room the first impressions were mixed. We did get sea view but the balcony was tiny as we were in the middle of the two wings. Also the bed was not a double as requested but two singles pushed together. Anyway this was not the end of the world and we were just happy to be in view of the sea so we chucked in our cases and headed to the beach.
So we returned from the beach around 17:30 and went to the room and started to sort out our cases that is when we noticed the head board of the bed was crawling with ants, not just 1 or 2 but hundreds the entire head board was alive then when we pulled back the sheets they were in the bed too. So we called reception and we were moved straightaway. Reception staff were very helpful and apologetic.
So we moved to the seventh floor identical room same view etc larger balcony and settled in. Changed and went out to eat. Our first night was completely restless and on edge. There was still a problem with ants but not as bad as the previous room but the noise of the hotel services i.e. people flushing toilets taking showers etc was unbearable especially at 2 in the morning. So after no sleep and we spoke to our hotel rep during our welcome meeting the following morning, not alot of help and advised that they would move us to another room in the terraces but we may loose the sea view. Unhappy with this we spoke with the duty manager and she was exceptionally pleasant and helpful, we were offered a different room in the terraces or we could move to the Lagoon however this would cost an additional 1000bt per night. So we negotiated with the hotel and accepted a room in the Lagoon for an additional 500bt per night something which I am still not happy about and will be complaining to the tour operator Hayes and Jarvis.
Anyway now we can forget about the negatives and the moaning. Once moved to the Lagoon, the room was by far better, NO ANTS, very little noise and a double bed.
The three pools were excellent all had pool bars and happy hour and plenty of sun beds. Towels are available at the lagoon pool daily and can be taken to the beach also. The grounds were well kept and if you look hard enough there are plenty of wildlife photos of lizards, frogs, toad’s butterflies etc.
The hotel is in a good location a 5 minute walk to karon beach 100bt gets you a lounger and brolly for the day and is a flat rate anywhere on the beach. The beach is nice and the sea was calm not really anything to see if your into snorkelling beware of Jelly fish I saw quite a few and some looked particularly peculiar, but good for dipping in when it gets too hot which it does.
Breakfast was buffet style and always something to choose from fresh egg station and pancakes daily along with bakery selection of pastries etc. We didn’t eat in the hotel in the evening or during the day so unable to comment on food.
As with any hotel drinks were expensive and needlessly so. For a can of diet Pepsi at the tropix bar it cost 94bt (£1.80) also cocktails were 250bt. Something to note is that the bars do not accept money and everything is added to the room and then settled when you check out, and remember that whatever food drink ice cream etc you buy in the hotel is liable for 10% service charge then a 7% tax added to the total.
Anyway after paying for a can of drink once I never did again instead I went to the supermarket outside and bought them for 15bt.
There is plenty of choice for eating out in the evening and we opted for Bamboo Kitchen, Red Onion, Mr. Tong etc as well as trying various other eateries. If you enjoy Thai food then you will be spoilt for choice and its cheap to eat if your fussy and prefer to stick to ham egg and chips you can get it but it will cost more and probably be the same as you would get at Spain.
With regard to Tuk Tuk we went into Patong on several occasions via Tuk Tuk and just to clarify this the price is 300bt (£6) one way and the same on the way back. They will not barter and it is just a flat rate, this is expensive for the 10 minute journey but hey your stuck either pay it or don’t go into patong. The other option is hotel shuttle bus into patong leaves at 15:00, 20:00 and 22:00 daily 100bt per person one way.
Booking trips through your rep is crazy the holiday companies are very expensive in comparison to the tour booths local to the hotel.
I have so much more to say about our stay in Phuket and some of the trips we did along with shopping prices and food prices but I will add these in a separate thread in phuket forum/ Karon title just returned our review of Phuket. Also our trip entailed a stay at the Bel Aire Princess in Bangkok which I have also reviewed for anyone interested.

Whilst I except everybody has different expectations for their holidays, however I do not understand the negative comments made about this hotel. The Centara Karon Beach far exceeded ours and was a place that we hope to return to.
From the moment we arrived the staff could not have been more polite or helpful. Always smiling and ready to help. The booking in process was so easy and well done. The reception staff did most of the work while we had a free drink.
We only booked a superior double terrace room ( their lowest standard room) but it was huge. It was clean, spacious and had all the facilities that you would hope to have; tea/ coffee making facilities, mini bar, free bottled water ( 1 bottle per person per day), free use of a in room safety deposit box,TV, hair dryer, beautiful smelling toiletries daily, a huge and I mean huge double bed, small settee and a balcony with a small table and chairs. What is there to complain about?
The facilities around the complex we felt were excellent. The Lagoon Restaurant for breakfast was a joy. The staff greeted you with a smile every morning and the quality and choice of food was outstanding. The 3 pools were also excellent as all had their own qualities. The terrace pool was small yet quiet although it had little shade should need to get out of the sun. The Lagoon Pool was large and had a swim up bar. It had lots of things to do; inflatables to use, balls to play with and floats for children to use. There were loads of sunbeds and umbrellas so there was never a need to get up at the crack of dawn to secure one! The Tropix Pool was also big with plenty of sunbeds and again a swim up bar. A Pool Towel service was provided free whereby you each were given a card which you exchanged for a clean towel which you could not only use at the pool but also at the beach or on any excursions so no need to pack gaint beach towels.
The beach was amazing. Golden sands, plenty of sunbeds and sun umbrellas available. which you will ned as it gets so very very hot! A word of slight warning though, the sea can be choppy and have large waves but there a flags around offering advice. Just need to be sensible and use your brains when going in the sea.
Plenty of bars and restaurants surround the complex although we never experienced any problems with noise during our stay that others have mentioned even though our room overlooked the street. The food locally was so fresh and so cheap( I am a chef by trade). As mentioned by many others, head for the Red Onion to eat but be prepared to wait as there is always a queue. However the restaurant opposite The Red Onion ( says Family Seafood Restaurant on their sign) is just as good. We ate there often due to the huge queues at The Red Onion.
You must have a massage of some description while you are there. Massages are to die for and so cheap.
Our experience was wonderful and we would have no hestiation in recommeding the Centara Karon Beach and Karon Beach area to anyone
Overall Centara Karon Beach was far beyond our expectations and we would go back tomorrow if we could. Don`t be put off by negative comments. Having travelled extensively, nowhere is ever completely perfect unless you pay absolute top whack even though in our humble opinion,Centara Karon Beach comes close.
